I know this topic has been brought up many times (i read all the search results for it) but i just wanted to make sure i was getting the best wheel I can for gt3 as Xmas is rapidly approaching. Is the general belief still that the gt3 force/wingman formula force is the overall best wheel for this game?

Yes
In fact, i just got one for my Christmas present!
gotta tell ya.... i LOVE the way it rumbles... even on the strips.. :P
the only drawback is if you're driving Manual, once you lock the steering wheel (90 degrees) you can't shift, instead, you gotta take the wheel back to bout 45 degress.. Then you can shift.. thats the only bad thing i've found about the wheel so far...

I think the Logitech wheels are the only ones that work properly in the game. That is, any Logitech wheel that GT3 recognizes as a GT Force.

The game does accept some other USB wheels, but seems not to adapt properly to them. Steering for instance is damped as if there was a bungy cord in between, making response lag with up to a second. This is done to add feel when using a regular controller but is inappropriate for a force feedback wheel. When using the compatible Logitech wheels this damping appears to be turned off, leaving just a small amount of lag.

For the same reason, steering wheels that use the regular controller port are unsuitable for GT3. Ones that mimic the regular controllers will become victims of response damping. Ones that specifically mimic the good ol' neGcon do not work at all with GT3.

So a Logitech wheel is probably the only choice for GT3.

Since the WingMan Formula Force GP appears to be physically similar to the Driving Force, you may want to compare those two as the Driving Force gives additional controls. It might be a little bit more toyish than the WingMan and has analog paddles, which is good if you have no room for the pedals, but bad if you use them for shifting. In addition, also the Driving Force works on PC, though without any official support.

Driving force suffers the paddles jamming on the PC too. I'd go for the wingman if you could find one, or upgrade to the momo, which is a brilliant wheel btw :p

My MS FF just wore out and the momo has taken over my desk.

Well j2s.. i mean i got it for my christmas prez..... i did a "preview" of it ^_^ cuz i opened it.. then i stuck it back in.... hehe
but... there is only one word that i can say, "Undescribable"

Well... yeah... sadly.. the Shifter locks up about 80 degrees.. you only get to shift one gear.. like.... yeah. you get to press the shift button once, then you can't shift ne more
you can only shift after your wheel has returned to the natural position

Try it out... because that description /\ there is very confusing.. but i cant find the right words to describe the feel of it

I haven't heard much about the madcatz 2 most people just discuss the logitech wheels. Is the mc2 better than the driving force?

i am inclined to think so, but i've just read reviews (a lot of reviews). the shifting bug is a huge downshot for me, i don't think i could stand that. i break somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 controllers annually, so i'm not sure the Logitech could withstand me, either.

Well i mean...... You get used to the wheel's downshifting ability.... because its only when you lock up @ 90 degrees that it only allows for 1 shift..... and by the time you're slowed down enough, hopefullly you know your car nicely that you'll know when the "good" shiftpoints are.

oh, and about MC2, i also saw it @ Future Shop for cheap, but.. guess what.. NO CLAMPS... how you expect to drive w/o a stable base? i mean.. it does have suction cups... but what you expect from those? Using a steering wheel is serious business... and i wouldn't want my wheel flying off the table when its the last turn of a huge enduro... would i? lol

I'm contemplating the logitech momo force wheel right now because i've only heard praise for this wheel but I also noticed a momo racing wheel that looked similar to the momo force except it has a stick shift in addition to the paddles and costs almost half the price. Does anyone know if this momo racing works with ps2 and if it is at the same level of quality as the momo force wheel?

I have the PS2 Logitech (I guess that’s the “driving force”) I just got it and its great. One trick I learned though that might help folks it this. When you calibrate the wheel in GT3, it says “turn wheel all the way to left an right” or something to that effect. DON’T!! Only turn the wheel part of the way to the stops. This makes the wheel give you “full turn” to the car without turning the wheel all the way. I actually learned this from setting up joysticks in PC games. You have to play with the amount you move the wheel in calibration to get the right feel. Most people seem to notice its hard get used to the time it takes to go from “lock to lock” with the wheel vs. the DS2.
Also it seems after reading this thread that this would help with the “no shift at lock” problem as well.
Give it a try.

Yea that would probably solve the problem Vdr but unless you can situate the left and right turn limits equal distance from the center, one direction may turn more or less sharply than the other. Also, is anyone familiar with the Logitech MOMO racing force wheel?

THe racing is the black one with the shifter. Its better IMO, as i cant stand the force's pedals. The racing is cheaper, a bit less accurate (barely less), and the force is about 95% strength of the force, but it is a lot cheaper, and the pedals are much better. It also has a carpet strip so it wont slide around as much.

I got the racing, it works on the ps2. It doesnt have the shifting problems...its sweet :)

From everything I've heard, both Logitech MOMO wheels work on the PS2. The main difference as I see it (aside from the stick shifter on the 'racing' model and the leather wrapped wheel on the 'force' model) is that the 'force' model has metal bearings where the less expensive 'racing' model uses the same plastic parts that every other wheel on the market has.

I'm in the process of deciding on a wheel (or whether to even get one at all) and the lifespan and accuracy of the metal bearings have got me leaning toward the more expensive 'force' model.
:2cents:

Does the MC2 wheel have force feedback and does it have problems being a controller emulating wheel as opposed to a usb wheel?
