So I'm just randomly reading through the net and stumbled upon this.

From this http://fandom.wikia.com/articles/first-look-scarlett-johansson-ghost-shell

Also, IMDB and Wiki is saying the same thing.

...Yes, it's been known for awhile that this is happening. So I don't get the (?) bit.

Maybe it's the langauge barrier....

Oh, and ScaJo looks pretty good in the pic. She might make a fantastic live action version of Major Kusaragi.

I put (?) because I don't know the exact date. Sorry I'm not really up to date with the news.

...Oh, no probs. If you are unsure, why not remove the date altogether? When you have something more concrete, then you can amend the title.

It's not a must-do anyway. I'll leave it up to your discretion.

But I'll say this before I go:

To all those fuming that MC is not a Japanese actor, please, give it a rest already. This is an American production, primarily for American audiences. It's only logical to hire an American actress, someone bankable at that, to lead the film. End of.

I'm kind of in two minds about a white actress portraying Motoko. If you were to show a picture of her to someone who had no idea about her, I guess it'd be hard to determine her ethnicity. It's a shame Hollywood are unwilling to take the risk to cast an Asian actress as Motoko, though.

Was thinking of making a thread for the movie, but someone got to do it first :)

Not sure if SJ will do the role well, but I like Beat Takeshi being in the movie :) As long as the movie follows the story closely, it may be a hit :)

Agreed - I mean just look at the TV series and at how generically western the majority of characters are, including the Major. Maybe I've avoided the right/wrong places to go looking, but I've not heard a peep concerning that.

And then of course there is the whole body swapping thing anyway...

...Right, I forgot The Major is.... oh wait a sec.

Okay, now I got the spoiler tag going.
The Major isn't even human to begin with. She's a cyborg, wasn't she??

Absolutely a cyborg but still with a human consciousness...or was it, entirely or something gathered together from the whisperings of the 'Net?
:)

I don't have the problem with "OMG THEY CAST A WHITE WOMAN" thing. Whatever, they've always been intentionally vague about the Major's background anyway. It's forest for the trees I think.

My issue is much more focused on how they cast a white woman who has spent the last half decade being extremely unconvincing around firearms in the Marvel movies as an infamously stoic character who leads an anti-terrorist paramilitary group/Japanese Cyberpunk Schutzstaffel.

Schutzstaffel? Really? I'd never realised that reference was in there. Will that make it to the film or would that be too much?

Could you elucidate about the private army observation/comment please?

It has been a while since I've seen the film or the first series and they did use a fair amount of quotes and allusions, including one from Catcher in the Rye which possession of such is by FBI/CIA standards enough to class someone as a potential psychopathic killer.

Going to have to revisit the film and series again very soon: seen them both several times, but as I said, not for a while.

You mean Schutzstaffel? I thought would be a fairly poisonous reference for a film to retain... but I may just be too old and too grumpy, of course :)
Yep, I know that it was the full name of the SS - thing is, the film/series is set after WWIV in the mid 21st century where such distinctions may well have blurred from what we perceive them to be, hence my mention of the Catcher in the Rye.

GiTS always struck me as being disconnected from the current time: a true distinction of the philosophical concept that the past is as a foreign country.

Scarlett Johansson have appeared in so many movies lately and all of them are box office winners, Lucy, The Avengers and The Avengers Age of Ultron, Captain America Civil War (I Think), The Jungle Book and etc....
They are hiring her probably because they think that everybody loves Scarlett Johansson and will do anything to watch a movie that stars her.
By the way i don't care if a white actress plays as Motoko, i just hope the movie is not a failure like Dragon Ball Evolution and other Movie Adaptation of Animes, atleast Speed Racer and Edge of Tomorrow were decent adaptations of Japanese Anime/Manga/Novels.

I think it was because of Lucy and a variety of roles that she was chosen - true, she has been busy but look at the diversity of her films, from Under the Skin to any of the Avengers films. I think the decision was based more on Lucy and older films like Ghost World as these give more indication of her range.

She even appeared in the movie Lost in Translation too.

Five, ten-second teasers was aired during the Mr. Robot Finale. I'll leave them below so you can judge the film.

It should be noted by the indication of trailer 3 that it appears that they are addressing the Major's sexuality full bore in the film.

I liked it all until the last one. Where it doesn't even seem like she's that confident as the major would be, you need to be stone faced killer solider and would have done better just being a brunette version of Black Widow without the banter.

I mean can't judge a whole film off of ten seconds but it is interesting. Also I feel this movie will be quite long, don't ask me why, I just get that vibe if they're going to go into all reaches of GiTS

Looking at some of the trailers (especially the first one); it doesn't appeal to me as "Ghost in the Shell". I think the Matrix pulled off the modern futuristic look better.
