Does anyone else feel strongly that lapped traffic being ghosted online is not a good choice?

Dealing with lapped traffic is one of the best things about longer races as it slows the front runners down and give the middle of the pack guys a chance to catch up a little, making for a closer race.

I wonder why GT5 decided on this treatment? I can only hope it's ditched in the future. For now, I just treat the lapped cars like they are normal (when possible).

In all the races I've had so far in which I've come up against back markers, they've not been ghosted. It must be affected by some setting or it could only be in public lobbies.

I agree with you on the point about it being part of the racing. Did you experience it in a public or private lobby?

Well turning off the penalty setting solves this. However, turning it off could also backfire because if your in a room with people who cut corners, they will not be penalised.

It's good when you have fairplay driver with you. when it's a kid that is pissed it's not fun. Or someone using a view without rear mirror. They just can't see you coming . In Real life, everyone have a rear mirror and look at it from time to time.
Plus ingame I notice people usually take it very badly when they get lapped and wont hesitate to crash into you.

Yes, what they need to do is isolate the penalties into separate toggles for Contact and Shortcut. Contact penalties are what causes people to ghost, and I assume that applies to traffic as well.

I prefer to just have penalties off anyway, because they are annoying. But then people cry about rammers or that people are going to cut across the grass.

Look; contact is part of racing. It happens. If you're in a room with rammers, kick them or leave if the host doesn't. Find clean people to race with and add them to your friends, avoid public lobbies unless you follow a friend there and they tell you that there are clean guys there. Now if you race with clean people you're still not going to avoid occasional contact. Like I said... it happens. A nudge here and there is, of course, part of racing.

On the topic of shortcuts—I know it's frustrating if someone is cutting. But honestly... if someone has to cut across the grass to beat you then they are obviously a lesser driver. These people tend to weed themselves out eventually, someone who cuts corners is also very likely to run wide at some point and you'll be faster than them even though they cut. And again, if it's that bad, kick them or leave. Stay in races with clean people and you don't have to worry about it. Shortcut penalties I find are the most annoying because they are inconsistent; penalizing people when they spin onto the grass inside Karussell is crap especially when you're trying your best to save a spinout. Also when blatant cutting just a few corners later is NOT penalized makes it even more frustrating.

At WLR we race with the penalties off because we have our own well-proven stewarding system.

However (as we all know) public lobbies can be things of beauty... or completely horrible.

I haven't noticed the ghosted backmarkers yet but I'll have a play with the penalty settings later and see what's what. Good spot, TouringBubble!

The one good thing about this is that drafting still applies when cars are ghosting. In Forza if you turn off collision you can't draft other cars, which is a pain.

I noticed this when running with the HSRL guys. We've started doing longer races now and lapped traffic is becoming part of a normal race with us. We run with the higest penalty system currently, but had issues last race with odd penalties, such as someone losing the rear and hitting another car, and the car that was hit being penalized for 10 sec.

So, we are talking about lowering the penalties to "light" and giving that a shot. But, we're kind of in a tough spot as many people don't want ghosted traffic later int he race, but still want some penalties in place in case new drivers are still learning the ins and outs of proper league driving.

Knowing that ghosts still produce a draft is good to know, but really odd at the same time. Interesting implementation.
