Sorry if this isn't the place for this thread but I've just downloaded the GIMP & have no idea how to use it, I can't even figure out how to insert images. There's nothing giving me the option.

Please Help!

insert? do you mean paste an image onto another or just open an image copied to the clipboard? if its from teh clipboard, you can do file > aquire > paste as new. or, you could just right click the image > open with > gimp though youll probably have to look through the program files folder to find the gimp.exe the first time.

brightness/contrast, level, hue/saturation, etc are under: layers > colors

that should be good enough to get you started hopefully :)

I figured getting them now but I can't find any effets that actually work or that arent brushes.

Hmmm, try Filter- Enchance -> Sharpen, do not use a setting higher then 50, or you'll create noise, but this is the best way: Add an "Unsharp mask", set it to your likings, do all the stuff you want to your image and sharpen after you're done with your image, including resizing, always sharpen after you're finished!

Go and see the Photoshop tutorials thread, I've got 5 GIMP tutorials in my gallery, approved by other members 👍

Thanks for the tip PTF! I have another problem, I want to split my image but I'm not sure how.

A little more information would be useful.
By the way, you shouldn't expect to know how to use graphics software fully as soon as you open them. It took me years to learn Photoshop and i've barely scratched the surface!

I figured out how to split & put this together after messing around for nearly 7 hours. (I have way to much free time.)

& from using the tips in pink_the_floyd's gallery plus a bit of messing around produced this in about 5 hours.
