Glass half empty or half full?

But what if you have TWO glasses. One is full, and one is empty. The glasses are set 6 inches apart. Then a crack of sunshine comes threw the window and hits the full glass causing the water to heat up and evaporate, than the evaporated water goes threw the air and hits the shady area over the empty glass, condenses, and falls into it, filling it up. And the crack of sunshine moves away when the "used to be full glass" is half empty, and has filled up the "used to be empty glass" with water condensation half way. So what do you have then?

In that case you have a system where the glasses are both filled to 50% capacity. If you were to somehow transfer the water from the "used to be empty" glass to the "used to be full" glass then you have a system as long as the water is being transfered (it's that kind of thing that constitutes a life-maintaining cycle, I think...)

It's half-empty – Either the person who poured it was a jerk and didn't fill it up all the way, or the half that was in there is on its way down your esophagus. Or you spilled it.

If it's half full, it's half empty. They're the same damn thing, just worded differently.

"Ok, is it 1/2, or is it 1/2?"

Do you realize how redundant it is? THIS KEEPS ME UP AT NIGHT. WHY DO PEOPLE INSIST ON IT BEING ONE OR THE OTHER?! IT'S BOTH!

to show if you are either a pesimist or optimist. 1/2 full = optimist 1/2 empty = pesimist....

you seem to be niether, just easily fustrated :p

btw, its 1/2 full

The glass is less likely to spill than were it at maximum capacity.
The glass has room for 100% more liquid.
The glass is at 50% capacity (I liked that one)
The glass is potentially getting used indicating that the design is working properly.
The glass is below critical capacity with a 100% margin
If one assumes that the glass is being drained at a fairly linear rate, the glass will need to be filled again after half of the time that has passed since it was filled (assuming a 25% margin).
The glass is in a dynamically stable position (since the liquid is at rest and we can meaure it)

How is the fullness of the glass being measured? By volume or by vertical distance?
What is the glass full of? How much volume is left in the glass? If material in the glass is pebles, it could look completely full and still only be at half capacity.

...the glass presents questions.

Empty and full are the same thing?

1. plain and simple it is half a glass
2. it is inevitable that a glass containing any liquid will AT SOME POINT be knocked over:trouble:

3. and for yet another angle. What would hapen if you take the afore mentioned item and CUTthe top half off, would it still be half a glass of water or would it be a full half glass of water or two half glasses, one filled or a half full glass or an inigma or double negative or a small principality just outside of my sanity
or (drifts off and continues to ramble fo all eternity:eek: )

as for the chicken and the egg, chickens/birds/avian are desendents from prehistoric feathered cretures and the one thing in common was the egg so i have to go with egg.
all i am going off is what i have seen on tv.

failing that explenation of the chicken and egg, i say chicken omlet any one:D

Wheither the metephoric glass was filled today, yesterday, tomorrow, later, now....it doesn't matter. How it was filled doesn't matter. The fact that you even have a glass to put the "what-ever" in it to begin with is grounds for thankfulness....isn't that what this about anyways, wheither or not you are a thankful person and can recognize riches in our lives? I would hope that I see my glass half-full. In all honesty, I have been very fortunate to see my glass over flowing.

My chemistry teacher has a slideshow of pictures like that. He shows them to us after every test.

Well, my theory is that if the water was poured into the glass to fill it halfway, it's half full. But if it was full before, but you drank half of it, it's half empty.

My theory is that there is a parallel dimension in which the glass is always full - so the glass is never REALLY empty :p
