Just because it says 304mph doesnt mean you can go that fast. Hell, I can put a tall sixth gear in about any car and raise the top speed theoretically. Engine won't take you there though.

This is also how the Germans set the 155mph limiter on their cars. Make the top gear a cruise gear. None of the cars in this game with one in real life have one in this game, but you can set up one. You would need the FCT though and that's unrealistic. Also the only real reason the M5 has 7 gears and the IS-F has 8 :indiff:

hah, thats nothing, in GT1 you could gear up Supra GT to 850 Km/h theoretical speed.on 6th gear (7th was there too)
yes, if you did that long gears, Turbo wouldnt start.

The Dodge Viper should have a similar really tall 6th gear. Anybody in front of their PS3 to check the speed on that gear?

The 155mph limit is an electronic limiter in the ECU, not a gearing limitation.

I had a Pug 306 DTurbo a few years ago and it bounced on the limiter in fifth gear doing about 105 mph. It really needed an extra gear.

This thread is still pointless, I think it must be the thread for people who don't understand the concept of fuel consumtion.

As others have stated, yes 6th gear is an overdrive for improving fuel economy. The Corvette C6 Z06, C5, Lexus LFA, and the Lotus Evora are prime examples.

Not only this, its the "cruise gear" like other people here pointed it up already.

Its enables you to drive comfortably on the highway/autobahn, without changing anymore gears, without wasting too much fuel and with not so loud engine sounds.

I know everyone is calling this a cruise gear, but originally the speed was messed up on the game. I got a MINOLTA 88-CV race car and set the gearbox for "240 MPH", but then drove it and found that it had a top speed of about 145. I believe that there was a glitch in the game initially, but this has been fixed in the course of the updates.

Things are weird like that. I've had my ACR up to 514mph before, and I know other cars go higher.

Not on the track in GT5, you haven't.

As others have said, it is the theoretical top speed the gearbox is capable of, in practice a ton of other factors can restrict it. That's why with lower ratios or less powerful cars you can reach the max speed shown in the transmission settings, or get close, but for higher performance cars and/or longer ratios, you won't get anywhere near.
