I would also suggest Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Teatime Of The Soul. They are available together under one cover, and though they don't feature Arthur Dent and crew, they are quite entertaining as well.

And Gil, you've touched on one of several reasons I dislike organized religion: the fact that Man was punished for daring to pursue knowledge. That doesn't sit very well with me.
