Going to Melbourne-Need suggestions for what to do

I'm off to Melbourne in the summer and I'm kinda stuck for stuff to do
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, I'm travelling alone (I'm 15) cause my mum lives out there so I'm going to see her. Has anyone travelled alone before? I'm getting one of those chaperone people I think from B.A. but still its pretty scary :nervous:
Oh, and can anyone recommend any good autobiographies to read, probably a racing driver or tennis player. Defonately not a footballer :crazy:

Party with Casio and his girlfriend. Personal experience tells me she's not the most faithful girl, and Brad doesn't seem to mind.

But you're 15, so don't do that. But Casio does live in Melbourne, so he'd probably be able to give you some great pointers when he shows up.
 
You could go to St Kilda and laugh at what passes for a beach in Melbourne :lol:

There is plenty to do in Melbourne, they seem to think they live in the cultural hub of Australia, so there are plenty of museums to visit.

Get tickets to an AFL game, you’ll be confused at what the hell the players are actually doing (like all Aussies not from Melbourne or Adelaide) but you’ll get a good laugh out of it and the crowds are awesome.

It’s been about 15 years since I was last there so I can’t really give you too much info on what goes on down in Mexico but there are all sorts of websites like this that will let you know what cool stuff is happening.

Traveling alone is pretty cool if you're an unaccompanied minor. You board the plane first, and if you have any connecting flights, the airline will shuttle you straight to your waiting plane. I flew to Belgium when I was 9 and was part of a group of other UAs. When I was 14, I also flew to Arkansas alone. I would've missed my connection in Charlotte NC if it wasn't for the shuttle ride they gave me. They literally kicked a bunch of old people off the shuttle cart so that the driver could take me and haul ass through the airport. We probably averaged a good 20mph. Anyway, don't worry about traveling alone. The company will take care of you. Now I wish I could still travel as an unaccompanied minor.
 
Melbourne? See your doctor he will probably have to give you a bunch of shots....


I joke, hmm, Melbourne doesn't have any good beaches... They have a good Casino (for Australia, crappy compared to US Casinos) but you are too young for that. Nothing else to do but ride around on trams all day. :p

Melbourne has some old Jails that are interesting to visit, they are bound to with so many crooks over there.
 
Hard to recommend things to do when you're underage. You could check out what a poor excuse of a theme-park we have (Luna Park), watch out for the rollercoaster though... it's about 100 years old (no joke, it really is).

Other than that, go what an AFL game or wait until you're 18 so you can go have a good time in the city.
 
There's quite a lot of beaches here, and there's a few nice areas which are worth seeing, but pointless if you have no way of getting there since you can't drive.

Nothing here, move along.
 
If you think Stkilda beach is a joke, go to Williamstown. You actually see the drainage pipes flow into the sea. The nicer beaches of Victoria can be seen along the coast up to and including Rye/Sorrento. Definitely need a car to get there though.

For things to do and being underage I would say stick around the city. Places to check out include:
Museum
Aquarium
Imax
Scienceworks(not in the city but accessible by train)

Then there is heaps of shops in the city worth taking a look at depending your interests.
Chadstone and Highpoint shopping centers while not in the city can kill some time and have a good variety of stores as well.

Also there is going to an AFL game, NRL game too.

Depending when you come there are sure to be some events on. Google Melbourne events 2009 and I'm sure a list of what is on should pop up.

If I think of anything else I'll be sure to post it up.
 
You'll be fine flying. Probably more so than some older people because you know how to use a computer and speak english :p

I always try to sleep on flights, so good headphones and a lot of music are my big things. As for autobiographies, can't help you there. BTW, which way to do you fly, over asia or through the Americas?
 
It hardly rains in melbourne these days. Just pack tshirts and warm clothes as the weather can be anything from 10C to 25C. even in winter.
 
Always unpredictable weather like others have said, be prepared.

In Melbourne, I never went anywhere when I was underage cause it sucked. We don't have the stereotypical touristy places. The Eureka Tower Observation Deck is pretty cool and gives you a good view of Melbourne but other then that we don't have anything you can't do in other cities.

If you're into shopping and stuff like that, then yeah, Chadstone, Highpoint, even Doncaster has some pretty elite stores where idiots like me will pay three figures for a polo, but you might not be into that, and you can go shopping in Scotland.

The ACMI (Australian Centre of Moving Image) has some pretty cool exhibits sometimes and at the moment they're running one on Video Games, so check that site out before you get here and see what's on.

Now that I think about it, in the city of Melbourne there is nothing to do but shop. That's pretty much what Melbourne is about, shopping and expensive strip food. If you go out of Melbourne then Phillip Island is definitely worth a visit if only for a great beaches and atmosphere.

...and stay away from Red Saab Coupes.
 
Ive got my mum and her boyfriend to drive me around :sly:
Forgot to mention, I was in melbourne at christmas which was awesome
we only went into the centre like 4-5 times though so theres still plenty left unknown (we went to wee towns and beaches and stuff most of the time)

I'm flying from Edinburgh, Scotland > Heathrow > all the way to Melbourne
Last time we stopped in Dubai (pretty awesome and I looked proper dodgy charging my MP3 player and PSP :lol:) and Singapore

Will the waves at Torquay be big in the Aussie winter, my mum said we might go there. And also maybe down the Great Ocean road or something, is that nice?

Great Ocean Road is awesome. Stop at Bells' Beach, which is where all the factory outlets are for the likes of Quicksilver etc. Stop at one of the villages and get a steak sandwich with the lot (no pineapple). Aim to stay overnight in Port Fairy, then head north to the Grampians (yeah, really), and stay at Hall's Gap.

Head on out to Healesville Animal Sanctuary, north of Melbourne: it's really peaceful out there. Spend time on the transport system. Melbourne's transport is amongst the best of any city I've been to.

Melbourne's completely awesome.

Oh, and read "Flat out Flat Broke" by Perry McCarthy, "The last road race" by Richard Williams, "Le Mans 55" by Christopher Hilton and "Piers Courage: The Last of the Gentleman Racers" by Adam Cooper.

Yeah, I want to go back to healsville sanctuary, I got an awesome boomerang for $10 there! When I was up that way we went to Marysville which is no longer there :( (awesome sweet shop there)

I've decided that in October when the MotoGP arrives into town im gonna head off to see that. Now for my overseas buddies i live about ~2200km (1400miles) away and i will 99% be going on my own so what to do... I was gonna just fly down and get a package to stay at a hotel and go to and from the circuit but i thought that would be quite boring so instead Ive decided to ask my fellow GTP mates (Casio??) if they would be able to taxi me around for the weekend and provide somewhere to stay, now i dont expect to be a free loader so instead of paying for my hotels and own transport i would pay for said friends admission to a 3 day grandstand pass at the moto GP.

Hows my idea?
 
Out of everyone here on GTP I'm the closest to Phillip Island (I think), probably a good hour and a quarter away, but that turns into 3-4 hours on MotoGP/V8 Weekends. Since it's a one lane road all the way down. It's probably a safer bet to get a hotel down there if you can.

I may be able to pick you up from the Airport and take you down, but to be honest I think you're just coming down to Melbourne to see the Saab aren't you.
