Yup, i am finally going to new york after 2 years or so waiting. I leave on the 22nd of june and there till 6th july, when i fly back to scotland.

So, my question is, what shall i do there, and for the people in the UK, how are the flights?? I have never been bfore, so i am sure it will be great!!

so, any recommendations???

Cheers,

Adam

There are so many things to do there you won't have a problem looking for things to do. The flight isn't too bad. Unless you fly with Air India as I did! All bollywood films, crap curries for inflight meals, and chickens and cows running up and down the aisles!!!!

Well...... maybe i made that last part up!

Rupert Jee's Hello Deli.

I have only been there 2 days but I understood that you should give up going to the statue of liberty, it's supposed to be a day of nothing much but queuing.

Yup, and you can't get up to the head after midday. As I found out when I got there at 1pm :(

Go to central park about 11 pm...walk around with your wallet sticking half out ! Also, buy some ninja stars from a guy standing on the corner at Times Square, tell him Jay sent you...25% discount.

The best thing to do in New York is to visit the meat packing district at about 2 AM on a Friday night. The area is filled with beautiful, exotic looking women just waiting to meet a boyfriend. Just don't mind the adam's apples.

;)

In all seriousness, what you should do in New York really depends on what kind of experience you're looking for. If you want a typical "tourist's day", be sure to check out Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Intrepid Air/Space/Sea Museum and perhaps Ellis Island or Battery Park City. There is also South Street Seaport, which is a tourist trap hell, but very pretty at night, since you can see the Brooklyn Bridge right above.

No tourist's visit is complete without checking out the MOMA, Metropolitan Museum of Art (or just Met) or the Museum of Natural History. If you only have time for one of those, I suggest the Met, though the Natural History museum has a nice planetarium attached to it.

Be sure to pick up a Fromer's or Zaggat's Guide to locales and dining. Every language is spoken and every type of food is served in NYC, often at ridiculous hours of the night.

For a less touristy experience, pick a neighborhood and just walk around. I recommend Lower Manhattan neighborhoods like SOHO, Tribeca and the Lower East Side. If you're in the mood to walk, just start at Union Sqaure and walk down Broadway; you pass through some interesting neighborhoods. Pick any side street that interests you. After Canal, you are in Chinatown/Little Italy; which is filled with good food.

Have fun. Be sure to pick up a street side Rolex at a fantastic discount. ;)

Yup, they don't call it the meat packing district for nothing ;) :sly:

Food Places

Totono's Pizza and Lombardi's are the best pizza places for a great authentic New York pie. Then, head over to Katz'a Deli where deli food should always taste like. Try the Carnegie Deli too. Then, you have your hot dog stands. Notice I said "stands" and not "carts." Avoid the carts like they were the plague. Gray's Papaya and Papaya King are the two best, but on Coney Isand there's Nathan's hot dog stand. If you want a fine restaurant steak house, Ben Benson's is your place. Gallagher's Steak House shouldn't be missed either.

Points Of Interest

David Letterman shouldn't be missed. Broadway shows like Billy Crystal's 700 Sundays, The Producers, The Pillowman, The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion Kings, The Light in the Piazza, Mama Mia, La Cage aux Folles, Beauty and the Beast, Avenue Q and A Streetcar Named Desire are great Broadway shows, so take your pick. Museums include American Museum of Natural History, Metropolitan Museum and Museum of the City of New York. For parks, Central Park West, Queens Wildlife Center and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. For zoos, try Central Park Zoo, New York Aquarium and the Bronx Zoo. Shopping malls, try Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's Herald Square, Bloomingdale's and Barney's New York.

Landmarks and Historical Sites

Try the Empire State Building, Grand Central Terminal, New York Public Library, New York Stock Exchange, Rockefeller Center, South Street Seaport, Staten Island Ferry, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and Times Square.

There are some neat looking memorials around ground zero from 9/11. Well I don't know if neat is that right word, but it is certainly something to see.

You also need to find places that sell counterfit stuff. I got a pair of Oakley's for 2 bucks, a Rolex for $10, and a Gucci watch for $10 also.

Other then that just about everything else has been pointed out.

Everyone has said everything I wanted to say except:

Yankee Stadium.

Why couldn't you guys leave the thread to me... I've lived here my whole life! :dopey: 💡 :sly: j/k

I paid £372 for my flights, from Glasgow-Newark, but that was a while ago. It was a weird one, i booked it through FlyBe, but all is not lost, as the carrier is continental :sly: I got them through www.opodo.co.uk and the tickets arrived one month later.

So a bit of advice - If you are going, DONT BOOK THROUGH CONTINENTAL! Our options were £372 for The flybe/continental one, or £700 for the continental one, so, beware!

Cheers,

Adam

PS. see when you are going to the airport, is it 2 or 3 hours before the flight that you have to check in?? Thanks.

And get stuck in traffic for a few hours. Not to mention the crazy drivers out there!

Welcome to the Jungle! We got fun and games! That is, NyC
You can always go to Jersey and diss NYC! :D

Or you can go to the photomode locations of Brooklyn and Times Square.

Since you'll be there on the 4th, go see that fireworks show they have.
