good system for a few years?

well,i re-built my computer a few months back.

1ghz Duron and mis-matched ram{768mb} on a Abite non-raid Kt7 mobo wasn't cutting it.i just wanted to upgrade the chip,only to find out it was maxed out already so,with my connections and about $205 bucks i got this:

as it stands now:
VA-666 ATX Case{Birthday gift and a step up from my Enlight 7237 ATX Case sitting in my closet}
MSI Delta2 LSR{$80}
Athlon XP 2500+{1.83ghz,tried to OC using MSi's OC tool and no dice}{$50}
1gig of Corsair ValueSelect DDR 400 512x2{$75}

i re-used:
Ati Radeon 9500 Pro
80gig WD{bought a 160gig brand new in circuit city for $30 bucks after the rebates and installed it as a slave drive}
Creative SoundBlaster Live!
A-open DVD Drive
Lite-On DVD Burner
ThermalTake TR2 M2

so,think the system is good for till prob. 2007-08?

If you don't plan on playing any games, yes, it's fine.

If you plan on playing anything that will be made in '06, you might as well just stroll over to NewEgg and get building.

i don't really see any good games coming into 06 except for UT2007.i've been console-playing for awhile now.

i'm not a fan of buying stuff online.

rather go to computer shops or even bestbuy,circuit city.

yes i know i may be paying more,but if i have a problem i can go right to the store and return the item{that happened with 3 replacement video cards in a few months span from a shop in NYC called EssenComp}

With newegg the replacement shipping is the best ever. Just a suggestion. No games are going to run on that system that are made in '05+

the only games i see myself playing lately are HL2,CS:S,Farcry{when i can find the bloody CD case with the CD's} and ut2004

i tried F.e.A.r demo and didn't care for it.....at all.

i may try and get DOD:S if it ever comes out in stores just separate.

i'm really trying to save my money and get myself a nice 350 Crate Motor {290 hp/350 tq}
from summit for my 72 Impala

Well, I hate to say it, but when Vista comes out this summer, it will about time that you start saving for another pc. At that point you'll be blessed to have many new options available, considering the improvements Vista will bring to the market. Things like DirectX 10 and 64 bit computing will put your existing hardware in a bit of a hurt. They will last if you don't plan on playing any titles designed for the 64 bit architecture, but you'll miss out on a lot of interesting new features that will be made available through it.

Oh, and a word to the wise, buying online will save you tons of cash, if you know where to look and who you deal with.

I'd say you were a little behind the times now. I've just upgraded from 2600+, 1GB, 9800Pro because it wasn't keeping up with HalfLife2, FarCry, BF2 etc. I'd save up a bit more and try to get something like 64 bit 3200+ and a PCI-E gfx card, but i appreciate that will be much more costly.

You PCI-E hoarders are lucky...I'm stuck with 4 PCI slots and an AGP slot. AGP being the only fair solution for a graphics card (a few months down the road I might grab an ATi x800 or something to upgrade from my Radeon 9550)

I have an AGP and 5 PCI slots! I made sure that I had a few PCI slots and an AGP slot on my mobo when I built my computer. I now wish that I had PCI-E, but it wasn't around when I built my computer. (My comp. is now like 2 or 3 years old)

It looks ok, but I don't think I would go to 08. Your video card is just the "end" of the line 9500 series and your processor isn't the newest.

Go for the fresh-on-the-market AGP 6800GS. I've heard great things! 👍
