Well,

Its been awhile I didnt have a car, and finally, I bought one. The car was owned by an old lady, its a 1992 Volks Jetta GLI. 88-92 GLI's are rare around here (GLI's are those with the DOHC 2.0 16v), or maybe I just cant see them around. I bought it 5,600$ which I think it was fair to the lady because of the condition of the car. There is no rust whatsoever around and under the car, the engine been rebuilt at 200,000km and now wears 240,000km. Its a really cute (yes I said cute ***** !!!) white with the black trim all around the body.

The car runs really great :D

Now, I want to change some parts on it because I'm not safe with the things that the lady putted on it (I dont even know what she put on it). So I'm gonna change oil and filter, air filter, all 4 pads. The tyres are ok for the moment but when the warm weather starts I'm gonna change those with some nice wheels.

No pics yet, but I'm gonna try to snap some soon.

Just wanted to share this with you guys :D

Sounds good, I always liked the way the old Jettas looked.
My friend just got a 2003 GLI.

Sounds great, but I'll be honest here. My brother had a mk2 Golf with a ton of kms on it, and when it started failing, it wasn't the motor that conked out, it was a million electircal problems and then a couple mechanical things. 5,600$ seems a bit steep for a mk2, but that's just me; I never understood the hype with the Jetta.

Have fun 👍

Like PLmatt said, you need to be high maintenance with Volks... :)

Well, today was a little mecanic day for the Jetta. This morning I got in and headed to my bro's crib to change some parts and the clutch just burned on my street. I was like WTF !!!! So needed to tow the car to my bro's, then buy a new clutch and install it. So I changed oil filter, and replaced the air filter by an universal intake filter without the coldair intake tube (oem rubber intake tube). So made a ghetto fitting for it until I get a cold air intake system (filter, tube, fittings and ****s), dunno which brand I'm gonna head to. Also, tomorrow I'll change the brake pads and probably try to add my springs on it. We'll see this tomorrow.

'Till then...

Ahhh, sounds like fun.

Sounds like a neat wee car. 👍

How much is a new clutch going to cost you?

From someone who has a '79 Beetle. I can agree with that. But . . . at least everything thats been problematic with my car is relatively easy to fix. The only thing I've taken it to a garage for is a tune up & getting the front end alligned.

Congratz! I had a turbodiesel MKII Jetta back in 96, the engine was anemic, but it was really a fun car to throw around corners. This car was the antithesis of the word "reliable" though.

Something really bothers me though... $5600 for a 14 year old Jetta with 240 000Km? The old lady made one heck of a sale, I'm telling you. ;) (even with a rebuilt engine and flawless paint)

Yeah but theres numerous factors that made the price goes high like that. And I think it was pretty fair to her and me, and I think I made a real bargain anyway. The car is in mint condition, and the mecanic is clean. So, I think its a great buy for me :)

Also, VW always had a higher price (here in Quebec) than domestic or other imported cars because of the "reliability" these cars have in Quebec, also the economical side of these cars are really known with VW.

This is what I was thinking, plus it isn't mechanically perfect, the clutch conked out on your first drive.

To put it into perspective, my friend just got a 97 Jetta Turbodiesel with 200,000 kms for 5 grand, in Quebec.

You don't burn a clutch with only one (or a few) bad shift(s)! :p Have the alternator and started been changed recently?

As for the price... here's why I was saying that:

Example #1
Example #2
Example #3
Example #4

That's after a 1 minute search, so there obviously are better deals out there. Prices for a 92 Jetta on that site are between $1.3K and $3.5K

OK, I'm done rubbing it in. Enjoy your car!

Oh, so it's a Panda! XD

meh, I'm probably misusing that term, but it sounds like you got a good find anyway! congrats!

Mmmm....16v...thats more valves than I have :( but two less cylinders :)

You dont see many MKII GLI's. Even rarer are the MKI's. If you are up to it, I bet some people would probably kill for your engine, not me, but im sure othr VW enthusiasts would.

Nice little car. 👍

Not quite the VTEC engined car you want is it? :p

Theres alot of 16v Golf's (original and swapped) but 16v Jetta's are really rare.

Now, Gewinde and BBS, and you are there!
Seriosly, with the Mk II Jetta, you can't go wrong with a low, low car, 80/80 mm lowering front/rear, and some nice wheels.

Check out Dubmodder for a lots of tips.

The Mk II Jetta can be made really, really cool with small stuff done. Small, but wide, rims, and lowering.. Nice! 👍

Oh, by the way, when I'm talking of small wheels, I think about 15" wheels, but not "modern" style. Go old-school, wheels with 2" lip or more..

GLI lips are already on the car, thats what I meant when I talked about trim. Fenders flares, lips, everything GLI equip is on it. I will see for the suspension since I cant go too low because the roads here in Quebec are rough. BBS wheels are the way I will go since its a MK2, I want to keep the old-school fashion.

That's great! I'm not really a VW-fan, but they are very good cars. Especially the Golf/Jetta Mk I and II. Too many people goes "90-style" with their Jetta/Golf Mk IIs. Much plastic, many bad-quality parts, etc. BBS and Gewinde, there you are for that ol'skool look on the VW Jetta Mk II. Eventually some Keskit or Borbet rims, they will also fit the old school nice. But, congrats on the car! You've got a great piece of car. Many aftermarket parts out there.. Quality parts, that is! 👍
