I can't wait to see what this game is gonna be like, it is going to be one of those flagship PSP titles that will probably break sales records or something!

More info:

The August issue of Official PlayStation Magazine is about to hit newsstands nationwide, and within its broad, manly pages lies the exclusive revelation of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories -- Rockstar's first real effort at a portable GTA.
Read it, and you shall learn the details of main character Toni Cipriani, a capo in the Leone family who patrols the streets in a Liberty City that's three years younger than it was in Grand Theft Auto III. OPM also talked to Rockstar VP Dan Houser and Studio Director Gordon Hall about the technical limitations and issues involved in making a free-roaming game for a portable system:

"We changed the way the city was structured -- seek time is a killer on the PSP, not the actual loading, so we have adapted Liberty City's world structure to enable us to burst in the data we need when we need it."

As well as the problems of portable battery life:

"The process of laying the data and code paths out to facilitate elegant streaming automatically ensures we are as battery friendly as possible."

And how Liberty City Stories is far, far from a simple port:

"We never looked at it like it was a portable game... I would really be surprised if there were more expansive handheld games ever made, but content-wise, I can be very confident in saying there has never been anything on a handheld like this."

Some pics of a PSP actualy running the game. :)

I'm looking foward to this game very much. :)

Edit: I hope no one minds I didn't use thumbnails. :D

Sweet, so it's a wireless multiplayer GTA? So I guess Rockstar is using the PSP as a platform to test new multiplayer code for when it releases its next big game on PS2 and Xbox360.

Seems nice. I hope they didn't changed the levels too much becaus they were really great! And I like to say the multiplayer option..

Iceburns: Do you think they will do a miltiplayer option on the X360? Becaus you have to pay for 'Live'.. I recommend PS becaus they give ehternet for free worldwide..

I found on amazon.co.uk what looks like the finalised cover art for the game.....in keeping with all the other titles......it looks good and the artwork looks abit more simplified than other covers (maybe to show its a psp version)......it is already wetting my appetite for the storyline!.....oh it also shows a motorbike so I assume they will be in the game.

......I dunno if this is the offical cover but it looks real enough... :)

GTA PSP: Multiplayer confirmed!
First ever official GTA deathmatch mode revealed
[30/09/2005 18:23]

In what is sterling news for PSP owners, Rockstar has announced that Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories will feature seven different WiFi-friendly modes that will support up to six players - and gamesradar.com has already played three of them.

While the main single-player aspect of Liberty City Stories is a solid handheld interpretation of the GTA experience, our initial impressions were that, beyond being portable, the game doesn't really offer anything not seen in previous GTAs.

However, we now know that the game will offer full multiplayer support for the first time ever in a GTA game (aside from a slew of unofficial PC mods), immediately making the overall package an even more compelling proposition.

Liberty City Survivor (the name was first mentioned on radio ads in GTA 3) is GTA's take on the deathmatch and pits up to six players against one another (a team version of the mode is also available). Games are set within one of the three boroughs - the deathmatch we played was on the island of Portland - and players are free to roam around the entire, fully-interactive environment.

There's an initial choice of seven characters, although it'll be possible to unlock a total of 60, plus additional outfits. Following a simple set-up process, each player is dropped into the game at random location. From then on, standard deathmatch rules apply.

The map pinpoints where each character is, while pick-ups are also highlighted. In addition to a full range of weaponry (including, campers take note, sniper rifles), it's also possible to collect four power-ups exclusive to the multiplayer games: Mega Damage (which makes your weapon four times more powerful), Invisibility, Health Boost and Frenzy (which arms you with a rocket launcher for a limited period).

Compared to the claustrophobic environments of classic first-person shooter deathmatch levels, you do spend an awful lot of time running or driving around in search of (or avoiding) other players, but the fact that everyone's position is highlighted on the map prevents players from losing one another entirely.

The key to success, as you'd imagine, is grabbing the power-ups, so often it's a question of racing to those before other characters can reach them.

Get Stretch, meanwhile, is a variation on capture the flag, with the flag in this case being a stretch limo. Your team has to carjack your opponent's limo and drive it back to your base, where your own limousine is located.

Your own limo has to be at your home base when you bring your opponent's limo back to it, or you won't get credit, so your team will have to utilise a cunning combination of both offensive and defensive tactics to win.

The final WiFi mode we played was the team-only Protection Racket. Each player is assigned to a gang and must either defend or attack a base. The first 'attacking' gang has to destroy four limos inside the defending gang's base in as short a time as possible.

Once they have managed this, the teams swap roles and the second team must attempt to complete the same objective in a quicker time. Whoever's fastest wins. It's a simple idea but nonetheless a hugely engaging one.

Rockstar has already stated that it's hoping that Liberty City Stories will be "the biggest game on any system this year". The fact that the game features the full GTA multiplayer experience that we've been hoping for ever since the series went 3D means that it could just be.

Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories is released for PSP on 28 October

And they have actually played the game and this is the report

GamesRadar.com
Liberty City Stories: We've played it!
Early verdict of the PSP incarnation of Grand Theft Auto
[30/09/2005 14:39]

Almost as soon as Sony announced that it was working on a handheld called PSP, thoughts turned to a potential 3D version of GTA for the machine. And when Rockstar subsequently bought Brit handheld studio Mobius (who were renamed Rockstar Leeds), it seemed inevitable that GTA would indeed be an early title for PSP.

We've now had the chance to visit Rockstar's London office and play GTA's PSP debut, and it delivers just about everything we expected from the Liberty City-set game. This may be stating the obvious but it is, in short, GTA on a PSP - nothing more, nothing less. This is, naturally, a good thing.

While none of the RPG-lite elements of San Andreas are featured - as we mentioned when we first saw the game - everything else you'd expect from a GTA title is there, from the wealth of compelling missions to having the freedom to beat up random passers-by.

Our main reservations are that the control system isn't quite as intuitive as that of the console versions of GTA (although that's more a reflection of the PSP hardware as opposed to the game itself), and the environments aren't as fully populated as we would have hoped. But aside from that, the handful of missions we played delivered the usual gamut of GTA-flavoured thrills.

Snuff is an early level in which players are still being introduced to the game's basic concepts and controls, and is essentially just an excuse to get you across to Ammu-Nation and equip you with an automatic pistol.

Sindacco Sabotage is a much later mission and sees you in the middle of a full-scale gang war in Hepburn Heights, with your task being to take out an entire posse of Diablos. Aside from occasional glimpses of dicky AI, this is a satisfying excuse to let loose with Uzis, AK-47s and Molotov cocktails.

Driving Mr Leone is a classic GTA pursuit mission, in which you need to make it to a Pay 'n' Spray before the cops catch you, while Caught in the Act is an on-rails boat section in which you have to pick off the dozens of Secret Service men chasing you in boats along the riverside and, finally, in a helicopter.

While there's nothing we've seen so far that hasn't been done before in previous GTAs, we're happy to confirm that the transition to PSP is a smooth one. As such, along with Virtua Tennis and Burnout Legends, it looks as if we've found the third must-have PSP outing.

Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories is released for PSP on 28 October

I'm surprised no-one has said anything yet. There has been an review from IGN, and they gave it 9.0. There is new gameplay footage too and I'm surprised how similar it looks to GTA 3.

Edit: Is it true that it's coming out on the 4th November in the UK now, as quite a few places still say 28th?

Best part about the game is it requires 2.00 to play unlike every other psp game out right now. Even the UMD swap method wont work. I'm glad about that.

I am goddamnit not :grumpy:

And GT, you prolly didn't know, but it's delayed for one week..

Yep, apparently in one mission you have to take over a radio station building. You can then create a user tracks folder on your memory card and listen to the tracks like a radio station.

That's cool! 👍

Yes!

Rise FM is back!

Am I the only person holding back on buying this game because of the $50 price? That's fine for a PS2 game, but not a PSP game, GTA or not.

But you get ps2 quality content.

GBA game prices caused me to miss out on many games. $30 for GBA is a bit pricey. DS games are as much as $40, there is a price to pay for portabilty.

But GTA as of right now is considered the best PSP game.If you pay $200-250 for the device $40-50 games dont seem so bad. I wont pay that much however:)

^hehe, why won't you pay that much? *Cough* ISO's wont' work *Cough* firmware 2.0 is needed *Cough* ;)

This is a game i don't mind paying for anyway,as it's GTA and it's a;ways nice to own a pallatable version of something, it gives more 'worth'. Shame i'll need to update my psp to 2.0 to play it though :(

Edit - Good to know Rise FM is back! Just need to wait to Friday whn it's released here.
