Gran Turismo 4 Online Racing: Will it be Successful?

The Gran Turismo series was known very well for some of the best racing ever. When one player played through race series, championships, and extraneous endurances, it felt about as close as you could get to climbing into a race car and competing any given race weekend. While the physics engine will have its first-ever new change since the first GT, I am here to again discuss online racing. Considering the amount of realism and depth this game provides, I am going to take a chance at asking this question: will Gran Turismo be successful... online?

Allow me to begin the discussion.

I'm not downplaying Gran Turismo or PD, but it has some huge shoes to fill if it wants to better PGR2. Project Gotham Racing 2 is about the best racing game on XBOX, if not one of the top 5 of this modern era. What made PGR2 so fun to some people was that it was a fun-fest featuring exotic and not-so-exotic cars. I will admit that the cities look very nice in PGR2, even though my loyalties are with Sony. Gran Turismo 4 will make realistic racing more entertaining. As I've said about GT3, I think GT4 looks better than real-life. When a game can look better than reality, you know it's beautiful. And while PGR2 got its ass handed to by "Need for Speed: Underground" (according to G4TechTV show "Judgment Day"), Gran Turismo 4 will likely make realistic racing more fun with online play. If you ask me, it will be fun to race online, but some may not like it for the arcade thrills of the PGR series. But GT4 has an answer to that: DRIFTING! To me, GT4 will mostly do well online, even what PGR heads daresay.

But that's just my points. What about you?
 
I think... You're going to get told to search before posting :p

PD have no prior experience in online gaming. That is the biggest mark against them I can see. There is an art to making it, it takes practice and experience and playtesting to get the balance right online, the sufficient range of options to ensure longevity and variety, and good, efficient code to boot.

What I'm wondering is if PD kept all the development in house or if they went to some of the more established veterans of the online gaming world and asked them how they did things.

The potential of GT4 online is undeniable. The premise is brilliant, and something many people have lusted for for several years. All the pieces of the puzzle necessary to make a brilliant online gaming experience are present, now all it needs is good execution. I'm thinking that since they've had a year to tweak, refine and fiddle, we should get a pretty impressive package, and there's nothing like having an impressive package.

I have to say that I don't really care....

And to back up that statement I will explain that unfortunately I'm massivley and hanusly in debt... therefore I will not be able to afford to buy myself a network adaptor or a Sony Live (Or whatever it's called!) subscription....

I do have Broadband... but it's only 150 so probably not quick enough either...

But I will be buying the game... I've even got 30 quid stashed away in a secret bank account that only I know about... (Er... and everyone else now... DOH!) to pay for the game!!

So the only way I may ever get to play it online will be in an internet cafe... (do they do internet cafe's with banks of PS2's - and if so wouldn't it be better to just link them together?!)

If I do get the oppurtunity to play some online racing though I reckon it'll be amazing.

Every time I see PGR2 mentioned, I must respond!!!

G4TechTV (who cares?) said that eh, I own both games, and can easily say that NFSU is crap, where as PGR2 is good. Trust me on this John, I have played both games ALOT more then most people would admit too. The only people who think NFSU is better are the ones who say that because it's on the PS2 :P

Code: Less fanatacism on the PGR2 defence, we acknowledged it was a great game. Who cares what they say, especially about NFSU. Oh, and I care who makes the console, Sony all the way.

I even refused to chip in with the rest of the family to get my brother an Xbox.

Back on topic, of course GT4 online is going to be awesome :) You can bet I´ll be sitting there as often as I can manage.
 
have been playing live for speed on the pc online last few days (mixed with prologue tests) and i gotta say this online racing is fantastic, apart from plaing n00b's, always one or two miss the braking point on the first corner and go flying off the track/ slam into the back of you and send you both off. otherwise racing against real people is a refreshing change. oh and the AI on GT:Prologue is ****e. its gotta incomplete by a long way. they dont seem to notice your in front of them at all.
 
Eagle, I stuck up for PGR2 in jest, I was being sarcastic about it, sheesh. But John was talking crap. I'm sorry, I just get all emotional when PGR2 gets slated, all I ask is people don't judge it until they play it online.

Ugh. PGR2 was fun online, but man there are a lot of whiners ...everywhere. I found myself trying to hang back and thread my way through the inevitible carnage on the first corner, but then you seem to run the risk of being *way* behind some guy who squeaked through before the mouth-breathers piled in.

There are times when I'd manage to find a full starting grid of people who didn't mash it up on the first corner though. Those were the really fun races.

I can only hope that GT4 is at least as fun as PGR2 was online.
 
Yeah, I agree, it's brilliant when you find people who are really good. The races end up being so close and tense :D
 
What's with the mouth breathers thing, I've seen that a lot lately.

I really think Gran Turismo 4 going online would be a very BIG addition to the popular franchise. In my opinion on the previous Gran Turismo, I felt that those game were "play alone" :eek: games. Its just not always that your friends or relatives can come over everyday just to play with you. I think the online will allow users to race people you dont know. Their skills can surprise you, make you laugh or even learn from it. Its fun to see how your oppenents car can keep up with you and do funny things at times. But I do think about at times about the long distance races if they are going to include them online. Such as the question below I posted :eek: :eek:

If somehow there can be a 2 Hour endurance race or some 100+ lap races. Will "pause" be able to be use during these such long races? :odd: :rolleyes:
 
Princess McLaren! Ahh. Thanks for the compliments and all. But as I say, if Gran Turismo fans aren't freaks or masochists, Pausing during endurances will always be welcome. And I guess in terms of endurances, it can even be two PS2s as next door neighbors, so it may not be so much of long races, of course, I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. I'm just asking if it will be as successful as P... a popular XBOX title, and stuff like that? So, thanks for speaking up, McLaren'sAngel.

P.S. I think it depends on 2 big things: What PD implements as cheater-exploiter/bad driver control methods and ultimately the other players.
 
After recently revisiting GT2 off and on durring the last few weeks and knowing that GT4 should have as good of or better selection of cars, the following should become a reality in 2005.

With GT2 there was a large field of cars for just about every horsepower range, year, drive train etc. If you could only imagine taking the cars from GT2 and racing them online against 5 other devoted GT fans, then I think that you will get a understanding of all the amazing match ups that can take place. Anyway with that being said I think that, I believe with out a doubt that GT4 online will be very exciting. It is still a only a game tho, with only 6 cars per race, so it will be a far cry from getting a real race experience, but it should be one of the best race experiences that a game can provide. It is my believe that the online portion will be very well done.

Online gaming can be good and it can also be crap. It has to depend on the maturity of the players in the race. Im thinking like this.
You see some guy who mixed up GT4 with Destruction Derby notice his name, and then you dont race against him for a X number of weeks/months. That assuming that it is possible to have own names but why should that feature not be in it?
Another thing, how many peeps have really good GT players in their area that they know of? I promise atleast that i do not so once again the online racing is gonna save me hundreds of dollars in travelmoney to link parties.

And then theres the drifting, it is what i am looking most forward to. Six cars, sideways, smoke... Ahh amazing.

The worst situation would be that online would just be several game lobbies and very little pre-race filters. For filters see this topic https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=43731
This means that it will be kind of a free for all, you make a race and wait for others to join. If this was to happen, then some people would need to make online racing leagues. Players then sign-up to that league with the GT4 online name that they wish to use. Then that league can develope their own rules for the races that they hold. Hopefully a 7th player will be able to watch the race and act as tournament director.

I don't see why you people going out and buy another racing games, beside GT. It's just not worth the money. PGR2 wasn't as good as you all been saying. Sure the graphic is good, but the game play sux. Dont' be fooled by the beauty of the graphic...like me. I've learn my lesson. Never again that I would by another racing title, beside Gran Turismo series.
 
It's called variety, I bought NFS:U for some quick arcade thrills and it did that although it couldv'e done that better, I have Burnout 2 for the same but Burnout 2 does that much beter. Race driver 2 for a different approach to the racing sim, Live for speed for top online races and I bought Auto Modellistia which was a mistake, a big mistake.
 
GT4 + online= WINNER
 
Another problem will be Power limits, if a bunch of civics are racing and then a F1 comes along..hmm you get the picture.

Players should have a Online only car....and build up from there..like win money for each online races..i don't really know what im saying :sick:
 
So put a car filter on it. Every option for configuring a normal championship will be available for online hosting if PD have any sense at all.
