It strike me how far pulled back the camera is here...I mean I can nearly see the whole of the windscreen here whereas in other videos of normal production cars the camera is much closer to the windscreen, like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1w76dGdY0CY

In DTM - as most Touring Cars, if not all, the front seat is moved way back in the car for weight distribution.. Should explain the viewpoint.

Yeah it looks like the entire dash and everything is moved back in that car. Or it just has a very very deep dash. You can barely see his hands so its not just the seat moved back. That entire interior is moved back. The gameplay is looking excellent. Physics show a huge improvement too. I am getting excited about GT5 again. :)

So what about those trees at Monza? To me they don't look like 2 flat textures put together (like on the Nurburgring and Rome track).
Many of you may not like the question but I'm just wondering what do you think about them. They look more 3D, like on Tokyo Route 246.

Its DTM style and they are like this in real life. Im trying to find a picture but i can't but I can tell you that in the new Audi DTM car you basically sit in the fotwell of the rear seats.

I hope they make the HUD adjustable in the final version of the game.
This list with the driver positions kind of ruins the cockpit and bumper-cam views...:nervous:

In GT4 you could choose between standard and simple HUD, so maybe we'll see something like that again?

That would be nice indeed. Or have a button assigned to pull the driver standings in and out of the screen. A bit like the 'select' button does with the map in Warhawk.

The reason is because it was made as a DTM prototype and they practically sit in the back of those cars. ed. oh jeez like 3rd person to be clever and blab about this, nevermind!

oh and HUD: Can we PLEAWSEE just set it up the way we want in an options menu? It really annoys me when games makers in this day and age don't allow me any freedom to change ergonomic things like this to my own liking.

More so with a DTM car then a regular Touring Car since the DTM car doesn't use an actual road car shell as the starting point.

That looks quite cumbersome - why not make the cars mid-engined instead? :sly:

The have to have the profile of a production car - and the actual roof from the production car actually (-:

Are you absolutely sure of this?. I've heard they actually have to keep the 4 doors (rears can be welded shut though), as well as using the roof from the streetversion?.

It's a CF chassis with the engine and suspension bolted on LMP/Sports Prototype style, with the roof section of the road car dropped on top, so it at least looks a little like the road car version. The doors may look similar, well 2/3rds cut down similar, but i'm sure they'll be made of CF too.

First impressions from my first stint this morning.

Ok, so it's Gamescom. Loud, crowded, smelling like a gym at 8 in the evening.

Sony's pretty big at the venue, though the GT5 area is a bit small.

Even if there aren't long cues: you have 2 laps, no time limit (at least 20 minutes). So if the blokes in front of you head for the Nordschleife, be prepared to be there for a while. God, youths can smell, can't they.

For my first stint I chose a conservative setup: professional physics, N tyres, BMW 1 series, no assists.

The good, the bad and the ugly

The ugly

In the heat of the action, I forgot to turn up the FFB settings, and unlike EA Sony wasn't kind enough to provide headsets. So the only feedback I got besides feeble wheel resistance was optical.

And that didn''t just do the trick for me. I would go so far as to say: whether you haven driven a real car in your life at all didn't really matter. It was pretty much unplayable and my smug grin soon disappeared.

That's a huge bummer, because graphic wise, it's a true GT with all its drawbacks and merits. The Nordschleife didn't have an impressive look to it, though it gave you the claustrophobic feel it should give you.

I didn't feel connected to the car in any way.

Worst of all, the hood view is just plain wrong. Can't see me ever using that, which is a shame because I grew very fond of the hood view in Shift.

And they still have those generic dials. I'm rather sick of them.

The bad

It's not a yaw-dropper. Nothing like the God of War series. Or Midnight Club 3 when you hit traffic on the highway. Or Shift.

I expected some kind of officials at the Pods, but there were none. Again, head over to Codemaster's or EA. They did a pretty decent job in comparison.

The good

The cockpit view is spot on. I mean seriously spot on. Seating position, field of view, graphic representation: marvellous.

Skidmarks, who would have thought one would ever miss them? It's bloody awesome if you spin out and you can see the corresponding marks on the tarmac. Brilliant little detail.

The graphics are good-ish. It's smooth, it's 60 fps, the tracks as far as I have seen them look pretty much like the real thing. Unfortunately, there's nothing that makes you go "wow".

The cockpit cam is a bit too static for my liking. Yes, I know a 1 series is supposed to be comfortable and all, but there was this gliding look. Especially if you hit the rather steep curbs, there was almost no rattle and shaking.

By comparison

GT5 blows Forza3 out of the water, if you care about racing cars. Not painting/tuning/selling them. By accident I found some Forza3 on display at my local Saturn retailer and played it almost back to back. Seriously, not even in the same league. Both visually and handling wise, GT5 is a big step forward.

With F1 2010 however, you get all the cheap kicks you could want for your money. You get that "wow" effect and tingly feeling. I was spectating for some odd 20 minutes, and graphic wise, that game simply blew me away. The AI looked pretty good, too.

Shift has still one of the most immersive visuals of the bunch. I would go as far as to say: the Ferrari DLC looks even better than GT5 if you concentrated on the cockpit view. Sure it has a bit too much drama, but the "visual representation of G-forces" stuff they claim to have invented works. Pretty good, actually.

My verdict

It's a mixed bag. My first hands-on experience was rather so-so, and I had nothing I could mention that was either fun or mind-boggling good stuff.

It's GT5. It's anal. It missed the fun and break-neck stuff (again, can't wait to try out Karting). In a way it's a lot less fun than real life, because I had to work twice as hard to keep the car on the road and not even got my inert trashed around while diving into a corner.

But it's GT5. It's a legend for a reason, and all the ingredients seem to be there. Again, the seating position from cockpit view is done perfectly and you actually want to use it. Could be it doesn't give you the edge in chasing leaderboard times, but I doubt it can be done better on just a single screen.

All those little, subtle things you want are there. In my living room, with a proper wheel, sound and neutral smelling spectators, I will hopefully have the chance to enjoy the game more in depth.

I've never driven round the Nordschleife, but I had the pleasure of driving a 1 series for 3 months some while ago. I didn't feel that I was driving a virtual BMW I'm sorry to say.

I'll most likely will get GT5 on release day anyway, because it's, as always, a "must have" if you've got a PS3.

But all in all, F1 2010 is just much more spectacular and exciting.

That's it, I'll be heading to the venue in a short little while again.

So, in other words, you didn't like it because it's not like Shift? Excellent! :D

+1 👍

In fairness though a big part of the feedback is the sound and if you take the FFB out as well it can feel a bit detached.

Thanks for the write up ItsHim

GT5 was badly represented at the venue compared to EA or Codemaster's.

EA has a Reventon and a Zonda, some Police chicks that pose for you and the new NFS has its own center stage.

As I said: it's a real and true GT title. There are small things, hard to notice while there's a 110 db(a) speaker trying to block out the noise from the booth next to Sony's, that were really very well done. I did mention the skidmarks, didn't I? It's hilarious to look at if you loose it at 160 km/h and end up looking at the lines you have just drawn on the tarmac.

But yes, I am critical because I'm into racing games in general.

EDIT:

No problem, heading over for a late session and hopefully the crowd is a bit thinner.

Yes, I'm very much handicapped by the lack of FFB and especially sound, but the blame goes to Sony.

Please note: I do see all the "good stuff", but that's pretty common knowledge by now.

So, not to offend anyone: the cockpit view is simply staggering. Noone has ever done it 100% right. Not even Shift ;) PD has. About time someone did.

@ItsHim Thanks for the info, especially that there is no time limit. :)

EDIT> Go to the GT5 main menu and set the FFB yourself, and the wheel level to simulation. We did this with the SLS AMG demo the other day and it makes driving much easier and natural. 👍

The longest I have seen was about 20 minutes. You get 2 laps on every track, and good grief, that really is a fantastic selection. Looks good on paper, but it's even better if you sit in front of it and browse through it.

The lineup of cars is awesome. Ferrai 458! Zonda, Volvo, Fiat 500s, BMW 5 and so on.

The contents of the demo are more than anyone could seriously have expected.

@it's him. There's no hood view only bumper or roof. That's probably what threw you off.
Thanks for the write up mate.

I'm expecting some good video footage from you and Alba from the next few days, if you manage to to get some direct feed audio of anything V12 (even if it's not linked to the picture) you'll make a lot of people happy 👍

You'll have to wait till Saturday for that good video footage (when Alba arrives with the recording equipment), because my phone camera is really bad at video. Might take some high res. pictures though tomorrow. :)

The crowd was very eager, so I had little chance to fiddle with the TV. On the floor there was a bit more space, so if anyone wants to get good footage - take those.

And it was even harder to get a Rep when the TV switched off due to "inactivity" - seems the TVs were in some sort of "shop mode" because they didn't react to the buttons on the screens.

Though having video footage, well - it is GT ;) A Japanese fellow crashed an R8 in the barriers (the concrete one on Monza moved noticeably on impact, but you couldn't push them around) but there wasn't any real damage. Not that I noticed, anyway.

But rest assured: it's looking as good as you're probably want it to look. There's still that lack of eye candy which is a trademark of GT I feel. But they have modelled the cars with a hell lot of care and it shows.

To put it in other words: no cleavage, rather a hand-made tailored suit of very expensive fabric ;)

Later today, we'll both be home about 12 hours from now.

A couple of Kazunori pictures got uploaded to the interview on the blog, but the rest will have to wait. We seriously have to get some better equipment for this kind of thing, it is quite embarrassing.

Mind you, with all the fussing about images published before the embargo, we're sort of glad we know we can't be involved. While we all want the inside track on GT5 and Polyphony's latest products, we've decided very consciously to respect Sony/PD's wishes to the best of our abilities. We hope that this spirit of co-operation will imbue a mutual respect that will lead to much more exciting opportunities for us, allowing the internet's largest GT community to enjoy even more exciting Gran Turismo content on a much broader and more enthusiastic level than the gaming media at large.

Stay tuned.

Well, it was on, but it was very quiet, and the surroundings were very loud. I ended up turning the TVs up to maximum, it helped. The NASCARs sound excellent, as does the XJ13.

Oh... and I think I can reveal, in a possible GTPlanet exclusive... as discovered while we were driving Fiat 500s around Monza... the horn works! :dopey: Yes, you read right, the G27 horn boss, when pushed, blows the horn.

Oh, and reverse lights work too. :D

Yes, the 'parting of the waves' when Famine was doing head-on crash testing with the NASCAR was impressive, second time around with closing speeds of around 500km/h they simply split like cattle.

G27 Horn Boss? My G27 doesn't have a horn button. Can you explain what you are saying?
Thanks

DFGT?

The centre of the wheel (with the logo) serves as a horn button, just like in many road cars. Probably you can assign a horn button for your G27.
