Gran Turismo 5 Is Not Boring Or Easy As You May Have Thought Before...

If I'm not grinding, what I often do is enter a race, which then determines the rest of the field. Then, resisting any urge to go near racing rubber ;) (obviously with road cars), I adjust the power setting down. If it's still too easy, I repeat the process until I have to fight to get to a podium position. Then it's fun. :)

I am getting my arse handed in Tsukuba 4hr endurance when i used comfort soft in Mx-5 with just ECU, cat converter and race filter upgrade. I thought I had Tsukuba figured when I did the Asia online tournament but after 54 laps I gained only 5 position after a long long time(after spinning out after gaining lead)
Going back to sports hard to see if I can win.

Well... again... if you choose a car within the specs of that race (and you can do that by looking at the typical opponents list), you can have some fun races even in Aspec. Arcade mode its more difficult tho...

Some examples:

Schwarzwald Liga B, use any original german sports car and you'll get a nice race... (of course, if you use the R8 V10, it'll be easier, but try with a stock E46 M3 or a 135i and you'll get it)

MR Sports Cars Challenge: I used a fully tuned Honda NSX-R '92 (standard model) and I got a damn of a nice challenge, using Sport Softs... @ La Sarthe... it was damn hard to hold that Saleen S7 and the Zonda... With a stock MR supersport car it would be a cool race too.

AI definitely makes mistakes. I was in a Zonda R one make race at the Ring, I crashed and fell way behind in the Karussell. I was pushing to catch up and as I come out of a turn I suddenly see a massive cloud of smoke, and an AI driver emerging from it. I almost crashed as he turned into me but still. It's awesome to know AI make mistakes from driving fast, and not just general bad driving. 👍 PD. I placed 7th in that race after never catching up. And in Caterhams I managed 3rd after some minor mistakes. The AI is brilliant now! Compared to before. :dopey:

I wouldn't quite say the Ai is Brilliant (even with the caveat of compared to before)!! But I agree overall about single make races. I'm finding that single make races in stock cars and running worse tyres than stock gives the best racing in the game. It's a shame that the most restrictive race structure gives me the best races!

With a G27 and H shifter, also no assists, i have for the 3rd time rekindled my love for GT5, especially in Arcade, i.e spa, 50 laps with GT500's.

tl;dr version (and perhaps conclusion): GT5 is more fun and challenging if you use a stock car (no tuning upgrades), turn off all assists using manual, use the cockpit camera view, possess extensive knowledge of racing etiquette and have great racing skills. This is how Gran Turismo 5 should have meant to be played and I'm enjoying it.
Use 'Stock' tyres as well. The game is so good with everything set to default...skittish fun and very, very challenging.

That couple of untelented programmers at PD with the task to create the Ai forgot about the difficoulty level, which is the only way to fit the game for different kind of players, you're asking why, Imo because they messed up and rushed it. Looks weird after 5 years but knowing PD and how bad they manage their time, it's possible, this is a double face company.
I know everything about arcade mode and I mention it, only I didn't bother to write the whole story so kudos on you, that mode is the only chance to have a decent race, where you are actually racing and not "catching the leader". But if we talk about GT5's career mode we talk about a fail mode, a couple of races could be challenging but overall not good enough, GT5p had a better "career mode" if you ask me. About the seasonal events they could be fun for a while but basically you need to catch the leader from the last place, meaning you are passing other drivers easily, not the same thing of a challenging race starting from 4th and trying to win against fast rivals, everytime I compare GT5's AI with other games, like GTR2, Grid or GT5p I swear so I don't care if I'm unsettling a couple of fanboys in here, PD didn't put enough effort on AI expecially in career mode and the gameplay is suffering.

Sorry to quote such a long post.

Surely adding a payout based on length of race is all we need here. The ability to set up your own race length plus opposition and a payout reward would make ASpec redundant for me anyhow.
You could forget all about it.

I´ve never found GT5 boring when it comes to physics. Driving in GT5 is a pleasure. I´m so glad that PD went the extra mile with details in this aspect with GT5, as in comparison with GT4.

For me, it is a complete pleasure to drive without assists, and even turning off the ABS on older cars for realism purposes. The ability to even tweek the brake strenght means that for instance, I can turn off the ABS on the Mach 1 Mustang, and adjust the brake strenght to 0 at the back wheels, and 1 at the front, so I can have that feel that I´m driving a car with sluggish drum brakes.

Also, since I don´t have a wheel, and have been playing GT since its beginings with a controller, I´m one of the good DS3 drivers out there, being able to control the gas, brakes and steering with the precision of a wheel racer. I use both sticks, of course. I have played many car games this way, and only GT5 makes it possible to enjoy a good drive this way.

As for other aspects like A-Spec (specially B-Spec), I´m affraid that GT5 is a little bit boring. More of repetitive, I would say. It is fun at the first levels, completing the challenges, liscences and stuff, but as you pass level 20 (which it´s easy to reach) the game looses its shine. This is more due to the fact that it is difficult to make money, and build up exp, and that the game doesn´t offer too much of a reward when doing so, like if we compare it with GT4. This makes GT5 feel somewhat like a world with strict and pohibitive rules. Things that a game shouldn´t have.

AI has improved, but I´m still yet to find a good challenge from it. If GT had a more aggressive, and a more "self conscious" AI with the ability to follow its race line reacting in real time, instead of a pre-established path, without being dirty like in NFS Shift, that would be appreciated.

GT5 is easy end of story, short no, easy yes. There's not a single race that is challenging unless you put yourself a challenge in it. But that's like saying ok I'll try to finish god of war with one hand to make it harder. AI is pretty stupid also which doesnt help. The only real fun I had against AI were on those hard seasonal events, those without upgrade.

However once you go online all that vanish, you can find competitor that you can beat easy or that you cant beat even if you race 100 times against them. That's the good point of any racing game now. Online racing is where the funs begins. However if you take online off GT5 it's a boring game maybe because I'm not a tuner I dunno. The game menu is so badly designed it makes me cry.

I've won one or two races in arcade with Ai level 10 since the update, am I ticked? No.. I'm having fun battling the AI for that last podium spot.

One thing though is that this shows the error in PD's way, they usually have the fastest car start first and with rolling starts and this new improved AI it's a bit more difficult to pass that 1st car. Lost (Came 2nd) a 2 lap race on the 'ring to a Ford GT LM Race car by 55 seconds driving R33 TC.

I would not call them untalented. Programming AI on a simple game making program for a 2D topdown shooter is a huge pain.

I just tried the German touring car champ on Seasonal event, with a R8 LMS ABS 1, manual, and racing hards, came 6th in eiger nordwand....i was hoping for more laps, as i was catching the leader at a pace of 1 sec per lap, and he started 15 secs ahead.

Dont get it. Um..Please explain...duhhhhhh..
Anyway the reason I said what I said is because i think that, taking into account the development time, the hype and all the broken promises, GT5 is probably the weakest in the series, compared to the brilliance of numbers 1 to 4. It still outshines 90% of other racers though.
Until I am back online and get the updates for it, my racing game of choice is F12011. Brilliant for one reason: they fixed most of the bugs that plagued F12010.
And I am convinced that the makers of the new Forza game watched closely to see what PD did with GT5, and learned from its weaknesses, ad will give 360 owners not only the best racing game on the system but the best racing game on the current gen of consoles. GT6, I think, is where PD will bounce back, and it will become the game GT5 should have been.

Most people complain GT5 is too hard for them even right at the start. I am not sure how PD should approach this issue.

edit: Is that F1 2011 comment sarcasm? People have been refunding the game on steam since its so buggy and unplayable.

Kaz already admitted that he wanted about 2 more years development on GT5. However due to pressure from the fans, the gaming community and SONY, they had to release it before the 2010 holiday season.

So all the extra content we are getting in patches is probably just the stuf they would have put in if they were given the extra 2 years development. For now, we just have to enjoy the GT5 we've got, take all the new updates as they come and hope for a truly extraordinary GT6 :)

So basically we pressure Kaz into releasing a slightly incomplete game.
How rude of us... :guilty:

I've been playing GT since release day of GT1 and this is probably the easiest yet. Previous GTs were almost like puzzle in which the correct first car choices could make or break your game flow. This game has always felt like it's overwhelming feature is grinding for cars rather than payment for any real skills.
