Which movie has the greatest swordfighting scene?

Some of these movies have many sword fighting scenes, so I won't try to limit it to one scene per movie.

Post other options if you think of them.

Here's why I picked each movie:

Star Wars - Episode II: Yoda vs. Christopher Lee
Princess Bride - Inigo Montoya vs. The Man in Black
Rob Roy - MacGregor vs Cunningham (end battle)
Blade - End Battle
Count of Monte Cristo - End Battle
Gladiator - Colluseum battle, gladiator vs. gladiator (with the tigers)
007 - there's only one swordfight between 007 and the bad guy
First Knight - Lancelot vs. Malagant
Crouching Tiger - Girl on Girl
Highlander - MacLeod vs. Kurgan (End Battle)
Zorro - Lots
 
Great thread idea, danoff! Good choices in here too, but I don't see the one I want to vote for :(

The definitive Star Wars lightsaber dual is Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Maul at the end of Episode I.

I don't seem to have the ability to edit "Star Wars - Episode I" into the list. Maybe that will happen magically for me. :)
 
I'd have to vote for Crouching Tiger, hidden dragon. So many fantastic scenes in there.

Others not listed would be Conan the Barbarian and Pulp Fiction. OK, so PF didn't have a fight, but the scene with the Japanese sword was really cool.
 
I loved Count of Monte Cristo as a movie, but the best swordfights go to Crouching Tiger.
 
i like zorros, they're funny, but you forgot to put Kill Bill vol. 1 in there!!! you monster!! also, pirates of the Carribean had good sword fighting sequences!

Are you crazy? How could you leave the seven samurai off a list about awesome swordplay flicks?

Im also thinking that I should mention how I feel that anime has way too many badass sword fights in various series... but since it's not live action stuff, I will leave it out.

As for the movies listed above... The princess bride, the mask of zorro and the first highlander are surely all worthy movies for this thread. ;)
 
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon gets my vote. In the same style Iron Monkey had great battles too, and I'm looking forward to see "the" fight in SW episode III. :D
 
I tried to get all of the movies I could think of (and have seen) on the list, but I didn't seem to get them all. Feel free to vote for your write in candidate and we'll tally them up to see who wins.

It looks like the jury is out on this one so far. Lots of votes for lots of different movies.
 
i have always like Errol Flynn in Robin Hood (1938) and Michael Caine in Kidnapped (1971)

it doesnt compare with modern choerography of course.
 
Blade II had a better swordfight scene than the first one IMHO (versus the ninja vamps).

But two of my all time favorite swordfights comes from the same director. Ryuhei Kitamura did two films called Azumi and Versus. The final swordfight in Versus was nicely done with a lot of hard hits and acrobatic/athletic moves - though the pacing of the whole fight is slightly inconsistent. The final swordfight in Azumi is also a sight to see. It works because due to the directing style hasn't been completely rehashed from other swordfights...plus the lead actress is damn cute.
 
Where's Kill Bill Vol.1 on that list? Best fight scenes ever, involving swords that i've seen.

Howerver seeing as it wasn't up there, I went with Crouching Tiger. I love the 'Green Destiny,' and the stigma surrounding it. Great fight scenes in that movie. Zhang Ziy,i VA VA VOOOOMM!!

Kill Bill owns every single one of those movies.
 
I saw Troy recently. I think that the battle between Achillies and Hector was probably one of the best all time sword fights I've ever seen. I think it may be my new #1.


Edit: I also saw kill bill recently - the swordplay really wasn't all the great, but it does probably belong in the list.
 
Gotta go with The Green Destiny. Why do I not remember a swordfight in Die Another Day? Strange.
 
I think the Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Anakin Skywalker duel will be better than anything in this poll. And how come no one mentioned the Luke vs. Darth Vader fight from the end of Return of the Jedi? At the time it was one of the most anticipated fights of all time, and the music was so great! Even when Luke defeats Vader (uhhh, SPOILER I guess...) it's so sad you feel no sense of victory. Anyway, I thought the Rob Roy fight was a lot of hot air and not that great a fight.
 
Depends what you mean by 'best'. Most dramatic, most tense, most realistic. Off the poll list my favourite is Crouching Tiger..., I've not seen all of them though.

But most realistic has to be Seven Samurai. Not seen it in a while and memory's a bit rusty so forgive any errors. I recall an early scene where one of the samuari is challenged and he cuts down the challenger before he's got his sword out. Now that's the truth.

Well, what about the Martrix-killer "Equilibrium"? This movie also has the best gun play

The Crazy 88's in Kill Bill Vol. 1 were crazy but I think that that was just a big massacre. Other great sword scenes in their too.

The battle betwen Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul in Starwars Episode 1 Has to be my favorite. But then the whole two on one thing leading up to it was good too. Kenobi just kinda steps it up a notch when Qui-Gon goes down.
 
Wtf? No Kill Bill? How could you forget Kill Bill? The Princess Bride SOO rocked. By far, it was also the funniest.
 
Where's Kill Bill? It had some really great swordfights in it. You should make a new poll with Kill Bill in it.
