So while browsing Jalopnik I came across this article: Ten DeLorean Replacements For A Back To The Future Remake and it made me shout out GREAT SCOTT!!!! this would make an interesting and fun thread topic.

I know time travel is probably impossible but lets not debate that, for the purpose of this thread say you just invented a flux capacitor and now you need a vehicle in which to put it into. The vehicle would have to hold the nuclear reactor and be able to hit 88mph obviously, however since it's almost 2011 and not 1985 you aren't restricted to big, heavy, oh so shiny, stainless steel cars. Oh and it probably would be a good idea to have the ability to fly because where you're going doesn't have roads!

So lets hear it GTP, what would you make into a time travelling rig?

I actually agreed with the Ford Raptor that Jalopnik brought up, and for the same reasons too. It can go 88mph anywhere, you can fit plenty in the bed of the truck and it looks somewhat futuristic. Plus it looks damn cool in time travelling trim!

I will have to give this some more thought though as I'm sure I can come up with a better vehicle.

Actually, Doc said (or started to say) that the Stainless Steel construction was ideal for time travel, and with modern upgrade packages...
 
Raptor was a cool choice and the GT-R not a bad choice either. :) --- Randy
 
A GM concept car that they never planned on releasing, but because they paid the studio a boat load of money, they somehow make us believe that Doc Brown got a hold of one from the Lebaneze along with his Uranium.

I *$%@ing love Hollywood and its ability to ruin my childhood memories.

Does the DeLorean make Back to the Future?
or
Does Back to the Future make the DeLorean?

Without Back to the Future the DeLorean would be a nobody car?
If back to the Future used "insert car here" would that car still have the instant recognizability that goes along with it?

The DeLorean was already anachronistic by the time the first movie came out, which made its use all the more endearing. I'd rather they just stick to that than farming it out to whoever the highest bidder was (and it would probably be GM) to strap to whatever (GM) car just happens to be coming out around the time to movie launched, only to be completely forgotten when the car in canceled less then two years after the movie came out.

Your questions aren't specific enough. In the 1980s? The movies absolutely made the car, and to an extent they probably could have stuck any car in there that they wanted and made it popular (though it would be difficult finding a car that fit the story the way the DeLoean did). 25 years later, however? The two are inseparable, and rightly so.
 
For that matter, shouldn't we have Hover Conversions coming out in about 5 years? what happened to that?

as for product placement...well, Marty's truck in '85/whatever the "present" is, should do well enough

@ srv: childhood for you, teenage memories for me, graduation memories for the age group that hollywood is currently aiming at, which are the now 40 something late boomer/early X people who graduated in the eighties.

Prower: i think it was either an 85 Hi Lux, or an early 86.5 Hardbody
 
Anything other than a DeLorean just wouldn't be right.

Also, the movie made the car.
 
The Honda CR-Z comes to mind for me. It looks somewhat similar to the Delorean but has that futuristic edge to it.
 
They should use the 2010 Audi quattro concept car. It has the same sloping rear end as the DMC-12, but has a modern look. It can obviously reach 88mph as It has around 400HP.
 
Pontiac Solstice. Cool looking, but not exactly famous for anything. Also:

IIRC, didn't even the Bricklin SV-1 gain popularity for a short time for appearing on a show once? I think it was green.
 
There was a Bricklin in The Junkman, but I'm pretty sure it ended up getting wrecked after only 10 minutes or so.

If Morgan makes a stainless model, It'd be ideal. You see, the construction is ideal for Flux-field....well, I don't know, Doc was interrupted before he could finish. XD

The Flux Capacitor makes time travel possible. Never mind how. It simply does. :lol:
 
A 1980 Mercedes-Benz 240D. Rugged enough to function in any time period, and ho-hum enough in modern times that it won't raise eyebrows. That, and ze Germans could engineer the bits of Doc Brown's contraption to just fit in the trunk.
 
Tell you what though, that Raptor in the article...

They would have to wait for another 'special' car to come along, something that has and gets the stature that the DeLorean had/got.
Perhaps if they made a new Lotus Europa. (and don't make it another elise with a facelift, ala the boring Exige and Evora)

Also, think about all the time period related facts/jokes that pulled the films together, like the Ronald Reagan Actor>President joke aspect, there were a bunch of other real life tie-ins and a remake would have to look for those same opportunities, and I don't think they'll get enough to make a remake work without it being a totally different film.

BTTF is a fun, comedic action adventure science fiction mysterious 'bit of everything' film, and going down the common nowadays 'Take X film, bring it into the REAL world' film farming system would ruin it, it worked for batman, but it won't work with BTTF.
A successful remake will not happen, it'll get Thunderbirds'd
 
I was thinking more about this, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized BTTF should not be even attempted to be remade.

It's very rare to have a movie trilogy that was actually good across the board. Usually 1 of the 3 movies really stinks.

Second, using anything other than a DeLorean in a remake would be a failure. Remember the Knight Rider remake where KITT was a Mustang? Doomed it from the start.
 
I'm not talking about the movie or remaking it, I'm talking about real life. Say you created a device to time travel, what car would you put it in?
 
I'd would have to be something made cool by the fact it time travelled.

And for that reason I would choose....

Small, convertible, French. Aslong as it's not raining, you should be fine.
 
It looks like you can put a hat on it so even if it was raining you could time travel while not being moist!
 
It is a French hat however, often as effective as a colander.
