If you liked that bass solo, the one Michael Anthony performs in the video Live Without A Net will just floor you. It's a lot better.

BTW, the song at the end of the movie Twister is "Humans Being" which is the last song Van Halen worked on with Sammy Haggar.

The rumor is, and it goes way beyond that radio rumor from a few weeks ago, that Van Halen is in the studio with producer Bob Rock and singer Sammy Haggar, and are busy working on a new record. Ed never stopped making songs, and apparently has more than enough material for five records. A lot of people I know in the music industry have heard the same from reliable people, so I hope they can make it to the completion of the record before things get crazy. Sammy Haggar will perform at the Super Bowl, so maybe Van Halen will be there too. Keep your fingers crossed; it's been too long.
 
solid, that's one damn hard song to find...but it might just be my school's firewall. T3 connections and I can't even utilize them :(

manic DEPRESSION :p - you can take the title either way, but I liked it...and it did have an oddly relaxed feel to it.
 
Yeah i could argue otherwise all day,
but id rather just spare the people here and let them enjoy their instumentals.
ohh and speaking of Hendrix
The instrumental parts in The wind cries mary are quite spectacular

I'll second (third? I can't count.) Moby Dick by Led Zeppelin. The Moog Cookbook also have a couple cool, albeit weird, instrumentals achieved by using moog synthesizers (Smells Like Teen Spirit, Hotel California, Buddy Holly).
 
The London symphony orchestra has performed some good ones as well (We Are The Champions with some killer violins when the chorus suppposedly starts, the 'Super Mario Theme' was a real treat too) The royal phillarmonic orchestra shouldn't be overlooked either.
I'll agree with Cano on Frank Zappa, and I think I'll throw Ray Coniff into the mix too. (if someone hasn't already mentioned him)

The greatest instrumentals? Wow....tough question. Lots of Pink Floyd instrumentals are just mood altering. Lots of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani as was mentioned already, and not to forget Call of Katulu as well as La Villa from Rush. You guys pretty much hit all the specific ones that come to my mind. In all honesty, I hardly ever listen to the lyrics, in fact I almost never do. It's all about the instrumental music. My wife on the other hand is strickly about the lyrics. Between the two of us, we have a pretty intense appreciation of music. SRV did a great acoustic instrumental on MTV that was outstanding. Lets not forget Tim Reynolds who often appears playing acoustic guitar next to Dave Matthews...., great stuff. Louis Johnson...., Jeff Beck....., YYZ, another great from Rush as well as Leave That Thing Alone from their counterparts Album. Can anyone say, "Dream Theater"?

Just too much great music to isolate the greatest!

just about everything mentioned up to now was rock, classical, or jazz...I just listened to Chicane - Saltwater (Thrillseeker's remix). They normally do trance, but the entire song seems to be made up of instrumentals with the occasional synthesized instrument here and there. The vocals only make it all the better - It reminds me of a very mellow opera thing (can't exactly describe it). Either way, damn good song.
 
Rock instrumentals are just plain amazing in my books, I can't get enough of them. Jingo by Santana, although not a true instrumental as it does have a small vocal part in Spanish, is just an incredible song, especially considering that it was the first Santana song I ever heard.

A drum solo that I have yet to hear is a 20 minute version of Moby Dick on the How The West Was Won live album by Zeppelin. John Bonham apparently just goes mental on the drums for 20 minutes straight in the middle of a 2.5 hour concert without missing a beat.

Another good one, although I haven't heard it for years, is Stranglehold by Ted Nugent. Outstanding bass line, just totaly addictive.

Speaking of Santana, one of my favorites has to be the smoking live version of Soul Sacrifice from the original Woodstock concert album. Amazing amazing stuff. Nobody knew who they were at all at that time, and they had the guts to stand up in front of a million people at rip off a blistering set.
 
for rock instrumentals, I just came across Symphony X - it's all the group does. One of my favourites is Devine Wings of Tragedy (20 minutes, but worth every second of my time)
