Spied: Next-gen Holden Ute / Chevy El Camino?

New spy photos show a heavily camouflaged Holden Ute breaking cover down under. The car shows many of the tell tale signs of being based off of the new Zeta platform, including a similar proportions to the aforementioned Holden Commodore and large wheel arches.

The overhauled Ute will come in time for Holden to boost its position against import 4×4 SUV's which are becoming increasingly popular in Australia.

A new El Camino?

Recently, there has been a great deal of speculation about the new Ute coming to America badged as a Chevrolet El Camino. Holden sources recently told Australia's CarPoint the lure of "substantial" export orders for "the Americas" have accelerated the planned launch date of the new Commodore Ute. Eleven months ago, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said a new El Camino could come by "putting a Chevrolet face" on a Holden Ute.

Most recently, Holden chairman Denny Mooney said that there is potential for the 'Ute to come stateside in an effort to improve GM's CAFE ratings in light of potential upcoming legislation which would impose stricter fuel mileage standards in the US. Although GM has concerns over the fuel efficiency of its new Zeta-based sedans and coupes, an El Camino would surely provide better milage than a typical truck.

“There is no question that it could potentially help,” Mooney told GoAuto last week.

They'll sell a million of 'em locally! hell, I'll bet the only reason they stopped was that G.M. didn't have a rear-drive platform other than the F-body and Corvette! well, okay, and the Caprice.

Lets put it this way, I'd buy one. Get me a Ute SS or a Ute Thunder and I'd be one happy man. Plus, its a good excuse to get rid of the delightfully 'not-as-good-as-it-should-have-been' Colorado and such...

a vehicle that would be great to see on the road. hopefully it wont be all about the look and it will be functional as a ute as well.. im not sure what the maloo is capable of as far as hauling goes, but im sure ours will be nearly identical. right? a sports car seat and short shifting six speed with a extended cab interior room and truck bed? the more i think about it th crazier it sounds! i cant wait to see it.

This would be something very unique to GM and thus be really good for the brand, I think.

GIMME GIMME GIMME!

I've long been a fan of the Holden Ute, and even the SLIGHT possibility of seeing one state-side is an absolute dream.

There are a couple running around here with M plates on them, I keep trying to snag a picture but I'm never in the right place at the right time with a camera.

It doesn't surprise me that there are a few around in Michigan. Given how they are related to the GTO that we've had, and this one to the G8 that we're getting, it really doesn't seem like it would be too hard to get them into the US for sale, legally or mechanically speaking...

The Return of El Camino?

We've been hearing that story longer than "Will there be a US-spec Civic Type-R?" or "New Supra?" mumblings put together.

No not at all, i always thought a '64 289 Falcon Ranchero would make a great tow-car/support vehicle, but they're as rare as hen's teeth over here.

WEll, Perhaps this'll convince ford, once and for all, to bring the entire Falcon lineup to the U.S. Including the Falcon Ute.

It probably won't happen, given that the new RWD chassis to be used by Ford is likely derrived from the current D2C Mustang chassis. We'll find out for certain I suppose, but generally speaking, I have also heard that this chassis is supposed to be co-developed (similar to GM/NA and Holden) between Ford North America and Ford Australia.

So, indeed then, your next Mustang may actually be a Falcon underneath, just like how it was in 1964...

Mmmm if only Ford would bring back the Ranchero based on the new Mustang platform with some Aussie engineering *cough*exterior and interior designs*cough* I would be quite pleased.
