GT 5 way too hard for novices

Let's not forget the Special Events aren't exactly vital to game progression. Sure they help a lot by providing plenty of cash and experience but they aren't something you have to do early in the game and they are the most challenging part of the game.

I feel they are best left for later if you are a novice player. Go off and do some racing in the regular series and then come back later to do the special events, you will be surprised how much you improve just through normal races.

I'm a complete novice; I haven't played a driving sim since GT2 and I know very little about cars (GT5 is quite the educational experience!) I've had no trouble getting any bronze medals in the licenses or challenges, but the gold ones are very tough. There's a B License Gold I still can't seem to get. I prefer it that way though, it just means I'll be playing this game for a long time to come.

Try iRacing for a month (12 bucks, make sure u have a wheel as well)
Get familiar with the cars and how they behave, then come back to GT5 and you will be amazed how much easier golds are.

Another good way is to try and find me online. I can normally try and help out with showing a good driving line around tracks. I also have the pace car
PSN: NOS_Waster
Message me if you need help and ill jump into my lounge.
(This is an open offer to any novice. I am not the best, but i can help)

EDIT: I also will not be back to my PS3 until the 18th of this month.

I have only had one challenge really really stump me. The rally stage in the Euro tour otherwise everything else was either easy, or moderately challenging. The Samba bus and Elise challenges in truth were quite easy once you know what to do. The Alfa time trial, just requires the right line and a careful right foot. I will admit it did take me several tries but I never gave up in frustration. Nascar is easy once you take ABS off. The Historic Race was easy with the right car and an early lead. So yeah I guess. I think a lot of this could be eliminated by stricter more specific event regulations.

The only notably difficult challenge/race was that Eiger Nordwand with the Alfa Romeo. It took me forever to find where I was going too slow and how to improve it. I was so ecstatic when I finally got gold I saved a replay of it (which btw why do the replays cut off before you cross the finish line?). Otherwise, I breezed through the license tests and most of the special events with all golds by the end of the weekend after release. I can definitely see how it would be difficult for beginners though. There's a certain rhythm to driving and what you have to do is figure out how the car handles and what the limits of the car are in regards to cornering most importantly. You also have to know how to approach the various types of turns and what your highest minimum speed should be and the earliest point in the turn where you can begin accelerating. It definitely can take a lot of trial and error but it's always doable in the end. If you have the Apex book, it can teach you a lot in regards to driving techniques. I definitely recommend reading through it.

This is not a cheap arcade game. It is a masterpiece that is close to being a driving simulator. That said the game is actually a lil bit TOO easy. I can explain why.

First off!
There is a total lack of restrictions on the races. This ruined the game for people like me who want a challenge HELL I don't even know what to bring to the table because they don't clue you in to what specs or tires the other cars have.

Second
The AI brakes to early too smoothly probably so that it doesn't crash into the other AI to much what this means is if you brake late in a hard straight line then you can pass cars that even faster than your own.

I beat SUPER GT w/Amemiya FD3S RX-7 Because that was the fastest car I happened to have in my garage from japan. That car is severely underpowered compared to the NSX RACE CARS. I doubt it handles as well either.

That being said it takes a long time to hone your skills I have been playing the franchise since GT2 and have played all the Forza games. I also started racing Karts @ 14 and then cars @ 19 so I had the driving lines already figured out. That being said though I honestly think that GT2 (w/1000s of hrs played) made me a better driver. This game is not even close to real life however lines are lines and it gets that part pretty good. The realization of speed a braking cues are much different.

Which reminds me one thing also. ... For you faster cars please please make sure you are breaking hard and more than you think you need to. A lot of people on this forum complain of cars understeering when the reality is they just are not slowing down enough!

Take your time (100s of hrs) and you will get it. This is need for speed or burnout (which I suck at) this is someone trying to be honest about racing and still make it fun!

EDIT

I would also like to note that I really suck at this game in comparison to a few friends of mine who are just driving gods on this game. For me I can not do what they do on a dualshock a friend of mine has 2 Force Pros and the game is much easier on those which also may be something you could try it may help you.

Also the camera angle in this game sucks in real life you are not racing the game from a camcorder stuck 2 inches off the ground. It makes it very hard to follow other cars. If you find yourself following a lot you may need to switch views to see better.

Let me speak from a little more past experience. In Gran Turismo 4, I lost my very first GT Mode race around Autumn Ring Reverse in the Sunday Cup events. I've been a veteran of GT1 through GT3 and felt like I had a lot more to do to become better in GT4. If anything, I had to learn to step my game up (even as a veteran) to take on the challenges of a much tougher Gran Turismo title.

I would NOT recommend the advice of selling GT5 and going with Need for Speed. Hell, I can be crap in rFactor and GTR games, but I'm not returning them because I can't win races. I just try to improve my skill and let success come as I get better and more experienced. You wasted your money getting a game. Unless you're completely not satisfied with a game, then by all means, trade it or sell it. Keep trying and keep improving your skill. Next thing you know it, you'll be experienced enough to take on and succeed in any Gran Turismo race!

I have been playing GT for years but some of the events/licenses in GT5 leave me struggling. I have given up on the last few tests in the S License. I much preferred the old sort where you needed to post a fast lap. Then there is the Camper Van Event which I find just plain annoying. Having said that I did manage to get to 2nd place once. After a few more futile attempts I turned off the PS3 for a few hours for me to cool down!

I know overtaking is a crucial part of any racing game, but at least in the races you can effectively set your level by the upgrades you add to your car. That way I can safely leave the AI train behind. In the events there is the spectre of disqualification hanging over you, which manages to remove the enjoyment rather successfully for me!

I play GT for the fun of being able to drive various cars, not to get aggravated by AI cars or finding myself disqualified, sometimes through no fault of my own! Maybe that is why I played Test Drive Unlimited so much, as you could just drive.

Agreed, just getting to the finish line in time is hard enough, but we get disqualified even if the AI hits us, the AI gets to knock over every cone and cut corners without being send packing, so the playing field is not level. enormous frustration:mad:

I can't do squat in the rally challenges, same with SeaBass Loeb. I just don't get it. I can't stay in the dirt, drive mostly in the grass or across the dirt from one side of the grass to the other, and either I brake too much or not enough. I'll come back to that stuff in a few months or whatever. These cars are awful I'm the dirt compared to other games, IMO.

I think dirt is great! Cars shouldnt be perfect on bad surface. It is as it's meant to be. You could just try another car or something. Not for Loeb challenge though. That one was really tough, just leave it for some time and come back when you're ready 👍

It is true that it's a difficult game. But remember what Kaz said: If you drive well in GT5 you will drive well in real life.
This is why this game is so great and why one should accept the challenge in my opinion.

Just a thought,

Maybe like GT5P it is harder to excel at the game with a DS3 than a wheel.

I class myself as good with the pad, but even mediocre players on a wheel have a definite advantage.

We just put snow tires on my wife's and son's cars. They drive a whole lot better with high tech engineered tires ;)

I think the game is too easy. The only hard/frustrating part so far is the lvl-system.

But if you still think GT5 is to hard, do remember the missions in GT4, compare them to the special events in GT5.

They have almost removed all the restriction in A-spec, which is kind of stupid. The only Cup I have struggled with was the first race in historic race car cup.

The license tests are also easier in GT5. Wasn't that hard to get gold on the first try in many of them

Good for you Freddie. Don't hurt your arm patting yourself on the back.

How are you at BBQ chicken...

Didn't mean to sound arrogant/bumbtious. Sorry if you perceived it as that.

But it feels like many gamers today gives up to easy, and I think that is one of the reasons why games today are easier, generally.

So instead of complain how hard the game is, practise:)

The races are far too easy, the challenges are nicely set, you're not meant to be able to beat them if you're a novice and lack the skills. Develop the skills through practice and patience and you will find that you can succeed.

GT5 is already too easy for most seasoned racing gamers.

So you would rather have a game you can complete dead easy & run round a circuit 30 seconds In front of everyone?
There would be no challenge In that & I like to think GT5 Is a challenge.
I have to admit though that I struggle with a few parts of It but thats the way I like It.
I'm running on a pad untill I get my wheel at christmas.
All assists off ABS on 1.
If you get stuck on something move onto something else and come back to It.
Don't be to hard on yourself or the game this Is a sim, You wouldn't expect to whoop the field In real life.
Just enjoy It.
*HINT*
Sometimes you need to slow down to go faster.
concentrate on entry/exit speed.

Can agree my friend Fredde_swe. Enjoy the game and i guarntee you will learn alot from it and also have alot of fun!

And to those thats wondering, if you want gold in all license and everything. Many of them are hard to complete.

And if you have played forza for years and never GT. You are not a novice. You got your skills from Forza. So that doesnt count at all.

It is amazing how much more time can be shaved off when you think you're doing the near-perfect lap.

GT has always required patience and practice. You just have to keep retrying. If you've had enough, take a break and come back to it... which reminds me; I must revisit Chamonix to complete the last of the Sebastian Loeb rally event - the target time seemed untouchable last time I played but I know from experience it's just a matter of practice!

Racing against your own ghost laps in Practice is a good idea to see how much time can be shaved off after repeated laps.

I feel that GT 5 is way too hard.

Its frustrating.
Nino

Just wondering what set up you have. I suggest, if you don't have one already, get a steering wheel, now your behind the wheel and you'll get that feeling.
The other thing I would suggest is " sometimes less is more" meaning sometimes you have to go slower to be quicker. It's a matter of learning the racing line.
This may take numerous attempts and an investment in time.
Keep trying and little by little you will become a better racer

I absolutely agree.. The hardest games ever made were in the 80's and 90's. After that the games got a 'easier to play' change to appeal to a wider public.
One of the hardest games I know is Dragon's lair on NES:dopey:

Did Sebastian Loeb actually set the times on the challenge himself?

I like the fact that the challenges are not easy. Getting gold requires near perfect driving on some of the challenges. I got gold on the loeb challenges, but i think the car has too little grip. I have Richard Burns rally and I must say I have to change my approach to rallying when playing gt5.

I consider myself an average GT5 player. The Loeb challenges were rather easy, IMO. Top Gear Lotus challenge, now that was hard in that it took awhile to figure out how to properly drive the Lotus without spinning out.

Some of the events seem impossible at first, but once you've repeated them enough times, at some point, something will 'click' in your brain and you'll finally 'get it'.

As for driving aids, TCS and ASM are the two that really kill your time - this is especially true when you aren't entering and exiting a corner correctly in the first place. Turning these off, then learning how to brake and accelerate through a corner is where you gain 90% of your time.

I feel that GT 5 is way too hard.
Some of the challengers are that hard that you just give up.
The cars cannot be modified, and you just have no hope to advance.

I feel I am not too bad, and yes in the past I spent days and nights trying to advance.
But I think GT5 is way tooooooooooooo hard.
I am struggling on the Turisimo Grand Tour with the Alfa going down the Eiger Nordwand Track.
I have tried over 100 times, and I am just unable to get the minimum time, I am always about 1 second out.

I feel I have done the perfect time, but no hope.
The Top Gear test track challenge with the Kombie vans is another one that is way too hard.

Its frustrating.
Nino

It took me 100 times too, but I looked at different ways to do it. Drifting or not. After seeing the videos in YouTube where people got gold on this event, and few tries later I finally got gold. I've got all golds in licenses and many in Special Events.

You just need to improve your skills.

Seriously, it takes strategy and fast decisions. The key here is to understand your vehicle and find the fastest racing line. Exam-related and mission races are more strict about your car than actual races, where one bump or one drive off the track results in a DQ.

I would have to say, yes for novices. I would say some of it can be difficult for advanced drivers. The license test (the indy corner one was the toughest to me), but the one getting me is the Special Event SL300 at Nordschleife the Beginner event the 2nd section(I have passed) and 4th section of the track! They allow no room for error. Just gotta go Fast like Ricky Bobby!
