GT Academy...why is ABS allowed?

This is something that I've been puzzled about recently. The participants who win the entire GT Academy competition go on to compete in real professional motor sport racing. As far as I know, no professional motor sport permits the use of ABS. So why have ABS in the GT Academy competition? Do the majority of in-game drivers who compete in GT Academy not use ABS?

Do the drivers use ABS in the GT Academy real world rounds?

If some one who uses ABS were to move on to the real world part of the competition, then when would the transition to not using ABS happen? Surely a competitor using ABS would need to be skilled at braking without it too.

The only reasoning that I can think of is that enabling ABS allows the player to concentrate entirely on the cornering aspect. Maybe one would master the cornering on a track before turning ABS off and implementing the braking?

What do you think?
 
Seriously. Do you actually think using abs in an online game translates in any way to real life? It's a marketing ploy for crying out loud, have you seen any of the replays of how the top guys have to drive to be fast? You really think they will drive a real car like that?

I think your parents should put you to bed a little earlier :rolleyes:

From what I know, a professional driver can brake in a shorter distance than an ABS system would. Is this the case for GT Academy competitors?

Anybody can stop a real car without abs, on decent tires, faster than someone in an identical car with ABS. In real life, it's MUCH MUCH easier to brake without locking the wheels than it is in the game.

I drive a race car in real life that does not have ABS. It's not very difficult. I CANNOT drive a car in this game without ABS while using a Driving Force GT.

I know that doesn't totally answer your question. Basically my point is that perhaps GT5 doesn't ban the use of ABS in competitions, because without a high quality driving setup it's very very very difficult to play without ABS - Harder than in real life.
 
I always race with ABS off, yet for the GT Academy I had to turn it on. I found the lap times were better, mostly because I couldn't set up the car to be stable under braking without ABS. That track really rewards stable trail braking. I tried using the RA menu but it wasn't enough.

I'd imagine they enable ABS to allow people with controllers to be competitive. No ABS with a controller is really difficult. I think they were more interested in the lines, as the track seemed designed to have a really non-obvious racing line.
 
OK thanks to both of you for sharing your valuable information.

It's good to know that braking in real life is much easier than it is in the game. I have a DFGT and I find it extremely difficult to brake in a shorter distance than if I were using ABS.

Do you think that it is worth while to practice driving without ABS in game? I know now that it poorly simulates real life braking but maybe it still helps for learning purposes?
 
I don't think anyone can complain about using ABS on 1, in real life with a real brake pedal its much easier to "feel" locking of the wheels than in game, I've always used ABS on 1 just to stop the wheels from locking, I found with it turned off its very difficult indeed, much harder than the real thing

As others have stated, it's not simulated well, so no. Probably not.
 
Unlike a real car you cant "feel" what the car is doing in a game, my guess is thats why its left on.

It depends on a few things. IIRC, the GT4 Cup allows it as does the Nurburgring 24 Hour race (the Falken GT3 R runs ABS as well as TCS). In ALMS, I believe it depends upon the class as the GT2 cars can run near-complete systems whilst the LMPs can't.

False. Unless the ABS system is complete crap, it will produce vastly more consistent results out side of highly trained drivers. And that is assuming the surface is flawless. You mix in imperfections, weather, etc, and the ABS will win virtually every time.

As for the game, modulating a brake pedal in a real car is vastly different than with a game wheel. As far as I am aware, no wheel provides force feedback on the pedals, and you also lack the g forces, etc to fully understand what the car is doing. Plus, GT5 isn't exactly an ideal model of driving and has many short comings, despite what PD would like you to think.
 
Braking in GT5 with ABS turned off is nothing like a real car, with the ABS set to 1 you can brake far more realistically (and still lock your tyres) than you can with ABS off.

Traction control is also allowed in GT academy, it is also present in Le Mans series racing cars in the real world.
 
In real life u "FEEL" the car. U feel if its reaching limits of grip resulting in an instant correction. U learn how much g-force u can create with your senses.

Sitting in a chair or bench u feel nothing. So only visual confirmation of losing grip (and a little force feedback or vibration). So its good abs is allowed. for people who can afford the 500Dollar wheel with the superpedals it should be off :p.
 
While the cars raced in the upper classes may not be fitted with ABS, the road cars (GT-Rs and Zs) used in the training will have ABS as all road cars built after a certain date must be fitted with ABS. So seeing as the car used for the competition on the PlayStation is a Z, the ABS being on is realistic.
 
ABS always increases straight line breaking distances compared to threshold breaking.

ABS is designed to prevent a skid, thus making the car controllable under heavy braking, not to improve braking distances.
