Hey everyone, I've always been a GT fan since the first game, however...

How is it possible that some of the drawbacks which emerged since GT5 have still not been adressed by PD? How ignorant of their fanbase can they be?

Where the ability to set which cars you can race, ie. there has always been a "rabbit" car on the grid which affacts the cars you have to use in order to win (a car which is unproportionately faster than the rest of the grid, forcing you to use a faster car than the one you'd normally use);

How hard can it be to improve the AI, which is absolutely pathetic, the opponents are painfully slow (AI brakes where noone would brake etc);

Why can't we remove wheel in fpv?

Where is car damage? Current car damage is just stains as I assume from GTS;

What is PD thinking with the absolutely nonsensical car list for GT7? If you add P1 GTR - add P1! Where is Porsche 992 Turbo S? Where is Bugatti Chiron? Where is Porsche 918? What's their methodology in adding new cars? Are they adding cars just for the sake of adding cars? There is no plan, no logic in the cars they add! Pre-HD GT games didn't seem to have this problem, at least not to this extent and besides, the competition has caught up! Look at Forza's car list! Where did the "drive the car you own/plan on owning" philosophy dissapear? Where are obtainable fast cars? Where is Porsche Boxter, Golf R, new Megane RS, fast saloons - M5 CS, M8, E63s etc? Is it possible that they're so out of touch with their fanbase?

Tire physics! How is it possible that perhaps the most important aspect of car handling has been so painfully overlooked in GT games? Tire grip, tire pressure, tire deformation, the effect of dirt and flat patches (after lockup) have historically been wrong in GT which is again something unexcusable, considering the ammount of money and time that has been put into the franchise!

Proper simulation of TCS and ABS have always been absent in GT. It pains me that a game such as GTAIV simulates ABS better than GT;

I would like to start a discussion in this regard, what do you think PD must've done better, especially considering the time and money spent on development?
If it was advertised as a simcade, it'd be fine with it - but considering it has always been the real driving "simulator", it kinda grinds my gears, don't you agree?

I am aware that GT7 hasn't come out yet but I can bet that all the issues I've mentioned will be present in GT7 aswell.

Like now there's good car sounds and Livery Editor?
Where the ability to set which cars you can race,
Didn't they say you can set up AI cars in Custom Race?

All of those you mentioned are better eventually in game later, but it's probably your problem if you disregard any cars except European exotics.

Forza 5 had reduced car list too for new quality, similar amount to GTS (starting at around 200 and endint at 322) and then the next game has 450+.

AI, physics and FFB all need work.

However expecting Beam.NG levels of damage is unrealistic. To have soft body physics with GT level of graphics isn't going to happen, and even if it could your not going to get manufactures to agree to it for road cars.

Beam.NG and Wreckfest both have a lack of licenced cars for a reason.

The list of cars is a very subjective thing. For example, I need more hybrid LMP1s (2012-2015, 2017), but literally no one else mentions this desire. I don't need a lot of modern hype supercars and I can't stand LMHs that are so much asked for and that replaced LMP1s, but again this is my opinion. You can't please everyone, the only common problem in my opinion is the obsolescence of the list of cars, especially racing ones.

Sounds great. There's a lot of negativity on the GT7 boards.

Your post isn't all that constructive. Seems mostly to be rambling criticism of which there's already plenty here.
It's fine to disagree with PD's design philosophy, but they'll have their own reasons to do things the way they have.

How is it nonsensical and why do you think your suggestions make more sense than the cars that have been revealed so far?

I would like to start a constructive discussion in this regard...
I think you don't understand what a constructive discussion is.

If you're going to constructively critique something, you should be giving friendly advice on how to improve those areas. It should not be aggressive, in the way that you have posted. And it should be at least somewhat detailed - the AI is pathetic or soft body damage is not a new thing are not useful suggestions that can be implemented to improve the game. They're broad statements made with no consideration to how the developer might go about implementing those changes specifically.

Maybe take a breath and try that first post again.

Kaz has said the AI has been upgraded. Default difficulty is in the middle. Believable or not, who knows?

Physics must be identical for crossplay to work. Is there headroom on PS4 to allow upgraded physics in a game series that has always placed emphasis on graphics above all other considerations?

Car list looks very Forza-ish and boring to me, not many cars that we haven't seen already in some other game in last 10 years. That's my unpopular opinion. Other than that, I think it will be amazing game.

I try to consider myself balanced with my opinions where Gran Turismo is concerned, it's a series I sometimes feel like I criticise a lot but I'm also well aware of it's strengths and why I like the series so much and any criticisms I do make I feel I can explain and justify based on my preferences.

To answer your first couple of points, yes it does frustrate me to see certain drawbacks failing to be addressed game after game. We are yet to see just how certain features and gameplay will be implemented in GT7, but from the information provided there is a suggestion at least that we will be able to set the cars we race against in the Custom Race mode.
How hard can it be to improve the AI, which is absolutely pathetic, the opponents are painfully slow (AI brakes where noone would brake etc);
AI is a realy big drawback, Kazunori has stated the AI is improved, it didn't look obviousely improved in the media we've seen so far, but let's see. I don't have high hopes for the AI in GT7.
Why can't we remove wheel in fpv?
A simple feature that should be implemented.
Where is car damage? Again, games such as beam.ng have proven that it can absolutely be done, soft body physics is not a new thing!
I'm not sure how much/little car damamge there will be in GT7, the suggestion is it's similar to Sport which is dissapointing. However, we are not getting soft-body physics damage in Grna Turismo, not now or in the forseable future. Manufacturers are very precious about there products and that's why games that feature such damage use unlicensed vehicles.

The car list is a very subjective thing, I'm happy with the vehicles in the game, sure there are plenty of omissions, but that's the case with every racing game that faetures licensed cars. THere will always be cars and brands someone wanted to see that don't make it in.
Tire physics! How is it possible that perhaps the most important aspect of car handling has been so painfully overlooked in GT games? Again, like with the AI this is something we're told has improved but I'm yet to see obvious improvements in what we've seen so far. That said, we haven't seen cars losing control from the players perspective,. so it can be hard to demonstrate. But what we have seen, seems very familiar to GT Sport, so I'm expecting the same issues with front wheel drive and mid-engined cars to be present. I'm not sure that this is entirely down to the tyre physics, though that is an area they can of course improve.
Proper simulation of TCS and ABS have always been absent in GT. It pains me that a game such as GTAIV simulates ABS better than GT.
It could be better

I'm not sure much of your post is constructive as you aren't offering comparisons or suggestions for how these areas can be improved or why they are wrong. Certain things like the car list are entirely subjective, ultimately it's coming out with a lot of cars and there's a lot of variety there. AI and physcis we hope are improved, there are certainly suggestions both have been (and no doubt to a degree they will have) but we are yet to see if they have been improved notably enough to make a tangiable difference.

One of the biggest peeves of mine aside from any of the points raised above is the single file, spaced out rolling starts used for most of the races. There is no logical reason to do that besides artificially making it harder to catch the lead car because the AI isn't good enough. But it's not an engaging way to start a race.

I do like the look of the tuning options and so forth, so I'm waiting for respected opinions on GT7 before I pull the trigger. I'll get it at some point regardless, I just might wait until it's reduced if i don't feel it's a game I'll pick up and love from day 1.

For reference, I have to date skipped Forza Horison 5 because I got bored of 4 and feel I'll get bored of 5 quickly, so what's the point insplashing £70 on it. So that should give you an indication of my barometer for when to buy a game or not. I think I preordered one game in the last 3 years, FF7 remake and that's purely beucase FF7 is an absolute highlight of mine in my personal history of gaming.

Always referring to gran turismo as "the real driving simulator" makes me smile. I understand your point of view.

Unpopular opinions?

I would rather have unequal length exhaust manifold sound for cars with Subaru/ Toyota boxer engines. (Or at least the option to get the sound)

Equal length sounds kinda boring in my humble opinion.

my unpopular opinion is people is happy because gt7 is either having stuff thats been on forza for more than a decade and they are bringing back old stuff from previous entries

its going to be awesome, though

Does Gran Turismo still have an exclusive deal with Toyota?
If so the lack of new/classic Toyota models is perplexing.
No Celicas for example is weird as they're a global car and have enough history especially with 7 generations and countless race variants out there.

I also heard Gran Turismo still holds the licence for Pikes Peak. It surely must be included at some point, why else would they keep the licence for to use it?

Pikes Peak should be in GT7, since yes, they hold the licence.

Edited the OP, removed the constructive aspect of the discussion.

Also, removed the soft body physics part, but still - it's better to have no damage than to have damage like this, since it completely ruins immersion.

Regarding the AI, it's painfully slow and for some reason, since GT5 they tend to brake a lot mid corner. My guess is that it's somehow related to the flawed tire model since the progression from tires gripping to losing grip is very exponential, as I'd say.
There is no progression to grip loss, the model is "good" up until 9/10 but then it completely falls apart. Tire grip is like an on/off switch, best way to test this is to do a launch and compare the times to real life numbers. No car in GT5 and newer (especially GTS) can match it's respective real life acceleration figures.

Unpopular Opinion:

Cars should only have ABS, Traction control, and engine modes available if it was actually on the car in the real world.

Example: The 2006 Ford GT should have no assists whatsoever.
Which would be fine but PD does a terrible job of simulating braking feel and brake lock with ABS off. Even Project Cars is more manageable on a controller than GT in this regard, and Project Cars is notoriously unforgiving straight out-of-the-box.

I'll try and respond to all your points.
How ignorant of their fanbase can they be?
Sorry. It's PD who's making all the decisions, not us. We've been reaching out the same issues to them since 2010 but here we are still aired. "Ignorant" is a reach because we wouldn't be criticizing the past games to the brim if we are.
Where the ability to set which cars you can race, ie. there has always been a "rabbit" car on the grid which affacts the cars you have to use in order to win (a car which is unproportionately faster than the rest of the grid, forcing you to use a faster car than the one you'd normally use)
That's called "rubberbanding" and is a thing present in almost all racing games that everyone hates (for good reason). GT has it, Forza has it, PCARS has it - I assume you've heard about NFSU's AI? Exactly that.
How hard can it be to improve the AI, which is absolutely pathetic, the opponents are painfully slow (AI brakes where noone would brake etc)
I'm not hoping for this one. It's been like this since, what, GT3? Kaz mentioned they've been working on the AI but I'll take that with a grain of salt. I have to experience it for myself before I make a final verdict.
Why can't we remove wheel in fpv?
This I agree on. The latency between the wheel and the actual wheel I'm using is pretty jarring. Don't get me started with the shifting animations.
Where is car damage? Current car damage is just stains as I assume from GTS
The manufacturers will decide if they'll allow their cars to have extensive damages. Why else do you think GTA uses fictional cars despite R* being obviously capable of getting licenses to their real life counterparts?
What is PD thinking with the absolutely nonsensical car list for GT7? If you add P1 GTR - add P1! Where is Porsche 992 Turbo S? Where is Bugatti Chiron? Where is Porsche 918? Quality > Quantity. Forza may have a lot of cars but do their qualities remain consistent with each and every single one of them? One car has good sounds, another is inaccurate, the next is ear-grating, the one across has missing side-mirrors - it seems like you've been unaware of the complaints about FM7 and FH4 (additionally FH5) having horrendous sounds. Stop letting that franchise spoil you.
That... I can't comment on. I don't take Gran Turismo too seriously.
Proper simulation of TCS and ABS have always been absent in GT. It pains me that a game such as GTAIV simulates ABS better than GT
With how TCS being annoyingly consistent with the threshold for wheelspin, the ABS is annoying inconsistent (not being able to select parts adds insult to injury) because it'll either lock or it won't.

Can't vouch for the GTA IV claim however, as the physics of that game feel like driving a boat on wheels (albeit better than V, it's still undesirable).
If it was advertised as a simcade, it'd be fine with it - but considering it has always been the real driving "simulator", it kinda grinds my gears, don't you agree?
I always thought everyone missed the whole tagline's point. It's supposed to be "The Real Driving Simulator" (as in real-life driving, whether it be running for groceries or speeding at the Autobahn) meaning everything will fit under the same umbrella... including professional racing unfortunately.
I am aware that GT7 hasn't come out yet but I can bet that all the issues I've mentioned will be present in GT7 aswell.
The question is, what if they don't?

That's called "rubberbanding" and is a thing present in almost all racing games that everyone hates (for good reason).
The inclusion of rubberbanding doesn't equal 'everybody hating' a title, as a feature it suits arcade titles well

GT has it,
Indeed, it can at least be switched off in the custom races, but it's also not GT AI's biggest problem
Forza has it,
Horizon certainly has it, but it suits the game, I've not noticed it in FM7, but its been a while since I ran it.
PCARS has it
Nope

Regarding the car list, one thing I don't like is the lack of "rivals" or related race cars in their respective classes, which led to a bunch of cars that feel very out of place compared to the rest.

For example, in 2013, when the Audi R18 TDI was added to the GT6, some people complained that the car was too slow, while others dismissed it as the worst LMP1 car. But those people didn't know that the car was slower due to a new set of regulations introduced in 2011, that reduced the displacement of LMP1s making them slower compared to previous years. This led to teams deciding to compensate for the lack of speed through increased downforce when cornering, which eventually made the cars faster than other LMPs like the Audi R8, or the Bentley Speed 8. Unfortunately, this was not acknowledged in-game because the performance point system was really flawed and tended to prioritize power-to-weight ratio over downforce, but I will talk about this in another post.

Going back to the previous topic, due to some players not being familiar with the new regulations, this made the car a bit out of place due to the lack of competitors within its class. To avoid this, the car had to have been added together with the Peugeot 908.

On the other hand, I would have liked if the Audi R18 had had the same treatment as the hybrid LMP1s in Gran Turismo Sport, where the 3 cars from the top category of the WEC 2016 were present:
  • Audi R18 e-tron quattro '16
  • Porsche 919 Hybrid '16
  • Toyota TS050 Hybrid '16.
As you can see, these 3 cars despite being different, shared similar characteristics in terms of acceleration, speed and performance, which allows them to be competitive with each other. It would have been a different story if PD had only added the Toyota TS050 and no other hybrid LMP1s from the same year.

Another example, was in GT5 with 2008 WRC cars, in which we had 4 different cars to chose:
  • Citroën C4 WRC '08
  • Subaru Impreza WRC '08
  • Suzuki SX4 WRC '08
  • Ford FOCUS WRC 07 '08

We also had 1966-67 Le Mans Group 5 cars:
  • Ford Mark IV '67
  • Ferrari 330 P4 '67
  • Chaparral 2D '67
  • Jaguar XJ13 '66 (never raced, but it was still a car from the same category)
1985-1986 WRC
Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 '85
Renault 5 Maxi Turbo '85
Audi Sport quattro S1 '86
Lancia Delta S4 '85
Ford RS200 '86

1989 24 Hours of Le Mans:
Nissan R89C '89
Sauber-Mercedes C9 '89
Jaguar XJR-9 '88 (same car but with a different year)

1998 24 Hours of Le Mans:
Nissan R390 GT1 '98
Panoz Esperante GTR-1 '98
Mercedes Benz CLK-LM '98

1999 24 Hours of Le Mans
BMW V12 LMR '99
Toyota GT-One (TS020) '99

2003 24 Hours of Le Mans:
Bentley Speed 8 '03
Pescarolo Courage C60 Peugeot '03

2005 24 Hours of Le Mans: (Both cars appear on the official poster)
Pescarolo C60 Hybrid Judd '05
Audi R8 PlayStation Team Oreca '05

We would see the same pattern on other racing series such as NASCAR, DTM, Super GT500 and Super GT300. Of course, I can't make a list for each series because this post might be too long, but as you can see, Gran Turismo provided several cars to choose from each championship. Now the Audi R18, is not the only cars that suffers from this, we also have the Subaru Falken Tires/Turn 14 Distribution BRZ '17 which has a very different performance compared to other cars with the same amount of HP on GT Sport. The Porsche 917K was going to have a similar problem, but luckily the Ferrari 512 will join GT7 in the future.

I know this is not a thread for car suggestions, but here are more ideas for cars that currently have no competition in GT6 and GT Sport.

2017 Formula D season
Subaru Falken Tires/Turn 14 Distribution BRZ '17
Nissan S15 Worthouse Drift Team '17
Toyota Corolla iM Papadakis Racing '17
Ford Mustang RTR Mustang RTR Drift Team '17

1970 Can-am season
Chapparal 2J '70
McLaren M8D '70
Lola T163 '70
Porsche 908/02

2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb
Monster Sport Sport SX4 Pikes Peak Special '11
RMR PM580 Genesis Pikes Peak Special '11
VIP Challenge Dacia Duster Pikes Peak Special 11

2011 24 Hours of Le Mans
Audi R18 TDI '11
Peugeot 908 '11

Again, shows how PD isn't sure in which direction they want to take the series.
Hence my mention of the 'rabbit' cars, which is something that happens due to the way cars are categorised (GT5 was much worse than GTS in this regard).

Due to the difference in regulations - the Audi R8 was MUCH quicker than the rest of the pack in, let's say 24h LM race back in GT5.
That alone made you use a faster car than you'd usually use, and therefore made you have less fun than you could have.

Also, regarding the AI, again I find it funny that you can beat N1000 cars with N200 car.

Also, regarding physics - has anyone noticed how improperly simulated is the flywheel/engine inertia in GTS?

Yes, also the Audi R8 was not as fast as the game shows. In real life, its successors, the Audi R10 TDI and the R18, were much faster than the Audi R8.

I don't care about any of the cars you've mentioned, so I wouldn't say that they're out of touch with their fanbase, just that they have a different opinion to you.

Back
