GT4 1080i scaling issue

I am trying get the 1080i resolution in GT4 to properly display on my Samsung HLP5063, but have run into some problems. I have my PS2 hooked up to the HDTV via a set of component cables, yet when I try to switch the game over to 1080i the image is offset and smaller than it should be. It appears to be a scaling issue, maybe related to the 1080i > 720p conversion? I know that there is an option to recenter the image within GT4, however everytime I pull up a menu it reverts back to 480i (normal) and this throws off the image (off centers it). I have tried messing around in the PS2 system configuration, changing from 16:9 to full but this does not affect the issue. Any ideas? Anyone out there with a Sammy DLP and GT4 that could tell me if they have this issue?

Thanks!

I haven't had problems with 1080i scaling, but I have had issues with the settings not saving. I can't find a menu anywhere that will allow the screen settings to be saved... sucks...

I think the inability to save settings works on the principle that you might use your save on a normal TV and forget to change the settings. As a result it makes you set the hi-res ones every time you start the game.

Good point. It would be cool if you could activate 1080i or 480p by pressing certain buttons when the game is loading, like almost all the other 480p games do. For those who don't know: you must hold down (/\) and (X) when the game loads to activate the progressive mode (the game must support progressive, it doesn't work with every game!!!). This kind of shortcut would have been a good idea for GT4 as well. :indiff:

No kidding, the menus ought to be 1080i too.. wth? I just dont like the idea of my TV switching from 480i and 1080i 200 times a day.... just doesnt seem healthy (especially after spending $2k!) 👎 .

I can accept the issue of menus being in 480i and the game resetting to 480i when restarted, however not having the 1080i output correctly to my TV really ticks me off. Is this a problem with the game?

Yeap, I have the same problem on my Panasonic 53" HDTV.. 1080i scaling is way off. . it's the PS2 or Game itself. don't think there's going to be a fix for it.. so you'll just have to deal with it.

I know this doesn't help you, but my 43" Hitachi HDTV centered both the 480i and 1080i screens.

Same here. No problem with my 42" Hitachi Plasma TV with 480i / progressive scan / 1080i.

It doesn't save? I thought it does.

Nope, video resolutions don't save with your settings, that kind of sucks, but I guess they do this incase you bring your memory card to someone's elses house where they don't have 1080i and get no display as a result.

When i select the 1080i option it gives me a off-centered preview of the screen but when its accepted it works properly. No problems at all. Now as for it being saved to the mem card it says in the game that it will not be saved.... I think this is a good idea just in case in the event that something bad might happen to your tv like.... you cant see the game at all... It doesnt bother me that i have to go in and set it to 1080i everytime i re-set the game. :)

I heard this "crazy" thing as I bought the game from my local retailer. The guy told me 1080i only works if you have a ps2 hard drive and a tv that supports it. Now the latter requirement is a no brainer, maybe I haven't been reading the forums very closely, but no one has said anything about needing a hard drive for 1080i mode. Anyone know anything about this?

I would not know anything about that. Like i said earlier my 1080i works, but I do have the PS2 HDD in mine so im not sure about that statment.

I do not have the hard drive and the 1080i works on my 50" Sony.
It doesn't look that good. I unplugged the PS2 from the Sony and I am now playing GT4 on a 32" SDTV using component at 480i. It looks OK. To me it looks better than the 1080i on the 50".

Sorry, but that's pure bull****! I played GT4 in 1080i on a Japanese console that doesn't even have the expansion port to put in a HDD. And even if you have one, GT4 doesn't support HDDs, so why would you need one? I wonder why some people can't keep their mouths shut if they have no clue. :yuck:

Go and slap your retailer on the head for that statement!

LOL! Don't shoot the messenger!!! but yeah I agree, I thought it was bull when I heard that from him. Ok, one more question then, what exactly do I need to play it at 1080i? A special adaptor? I assume I can't just use the standard RCA jacks, or is it as easy as that?

I am not experiencing any problems on my Mitsubishi WS-55411 in 1080i mode. I first centered the screen, then I selected 1080i mode. It does suck that you can't save the resolution setting to your memory card but that's a minor issue for me.

FWIW, all PS2 games leave an inch of black bars on each side of my display no matter what I do. I've had my TV ISF Calibrated and do not play for more than an hour or so at a time so burn in is not an issue.

I haven't compared the 1080i to 480p or 480i but I thought 1080i looked damn good. I've also got an original PS2 with no hard drive and am using Monster's Component Video cables.

So you wouldn't have to wait 10 seconds to go from the main menu to the options menu?

Load times are for suckers.

Sorry, but it is so much work to convince people of how things really are that it makes me mad to see that so many people that should know better (like a retailer) tell the asking customer (like you) these false informations. Anyway... if you have a PS2, GT4 and a TV capable of 1080i, you only need a PS2 component cable. Plug it in, set the game to 1080i, and that's it.

You're missing the point, the retailer said that you'd need a HDD to use 1080i, which is just ridiculous. I know that a HDD generally is useful, if it wasn't I wouldn't have one in my PS2. :sly:
Too bad GT4 doesn't work with it. :indiff:

I have noticed the same thing with all PS2 games. I am not sure why Sony opted to have this underscan on all PS2 games as my GameCube doesn't do this. Hopefully they'll fix this when the PS3 comes out. For those of you with 720p, you might be better off running in 480p which might look the best without the black bars. Those with 1080i, be glad that 1080p will be the next big thing as it should still look awesome even when downscaled and not have any black bars.

I havent had a scaling issue, but does the 1080i mode show up real grainy on other ppl's tv's? It's kinda annoying and I'm trying to figure out a way to smooth it out. Any suggestions?

-Brad

[EDIT] I have a 52'' RCA widescreen projection TV

For non-widescreen HDTV's When you set it to 1080i, it Will squeeze the picture, to fix this you must use the widescreen emulator in your tv, usually the zoom button or format button... This will resolve the aspect ratio problem, but you will have black bars at the top and bottom of your tv.

Hi everybody , i got the game today and wow its a blast to drive , but my Toshiba HX93 doesnt love the 1080i setup in GT4 . When i chose 1080i the screen move left down with weird line on the top

Im on component cable

Someone else have this HDTV ?

thx ;)

I'm new with this whole HDTV thing for PS2... what source should i use for the video?

The Component

or

S-Video?

Unless you have a deviece (i.e. receiver, pre-amp, etc.) that can upscale to components, you have to use components to get 480p or 1080i. I bought the Monster PS2 cables but you are probably just as good getting a more generic brand.

I am not having the upscaling problem but what the **** was Poly thinking of having to switch from 480(menu) to 1080(race) if you choose 1080i. For some of us that play alot this will eventually hurt the tv. This is the biggest ball drop since the 98.6% complete from GT2. :grumpy:

Oh well!
