In GT4, you had an option to change the screen to 480p or 1080i. But i don't know how to set it up. I've been looking for a tutorial but it shows thread or forums that talks about the 480p and 1080i options. Please can someone help me how to do the setup and the things I need to do this.

I believe that only the NTSC (American) version of the game supported 1080i. Are you sure you have the NTSC version?

If you do have the NTSC version, it's Home screen (where you can see completion percentage, select Garage, etc) --> Options --> Screen -->Video Output --> HDTV (1080i). Select OK (default), OK again (default is "Cancel", then OK one more time. Then triangle and OK to get back to the home screen.

I believe it will only work if you have a component cable for the display. I have one, and it sure pops out the graphics in 1080i.

You're absolutely right, I'd forgotten that you also need component cables. 👍

Probably a really dumb question, but if I play GT4 on my PS3, can the in-game setting be switched to 1080i, as there isn't a component cable?

It should automatically upscale the game to 1080p if you have an HDMI cable, or 1080i on component cables.

That's not completely accurate. If your PS3 is set to upscale your PS2 games, it will output at whatever your max display resolution is set at so long as your TV supports it. Mine, for example, supports 1080p through component so I could run PS3 games as such if I didn't want to use HDMI.

However, if you select the in-game 1080i option, your PS3 will display in the 1080i that GT4 uses regardless of whether you are using component or HDMI, and will not upscale it. It will do the same thing for the 480p option if you select that (as it will for any games that support Progressive Scan).

Just in case, I have purchased Stuntman Ignition from the PSN, so I will return with an answer that will straighten everything out.

Hello.
I've been having some curious issues with the display of GT4 lately. I'm using a component cable that is capable of displaying 480p and 1080i in GT4, but whenever I select the options to use those displays, the screen doesn't change and stays on normal (it says it changed though).
I was able to use the two displays a few months ago too, and I'm using a whatever-came-before-slim PS2.

A quick search for 1080, perhaps not surprisingly, brought up some answers.
Amazing how that works. ;)

Does GT4 support High Definition?

Post #7 in that thread lists the possibilities for GT4 displays and what's required.
Given that your location suggests you're in Sydney, Australia, and thus in PAL region, you'll be restricted to Normal or 576i. Unless you're playing on and NTSC console, probably with an NTSC-U/C or NTSC-J and with a TV capable of outputting in NTSC format you won't have been able to use 480p or 1080i displays that are available in those games.
Display options are dependent on the game version, and whether the console is NTSC or PAL. It's got nothing to do with slimline / fatty versions.

The HDTV 1080i effect applies only when you are about to start a race (race-menu). It will not take effect when you are on menus such as your garage, dealerships, World map, Main menu, Options, etc.

I'm playing on a console/game disc that was bought from the USA. I'm also seeing no change in definitions at all, and my TV can support up to 1080p.

Just merged 3 threads all regarding display settings and 1080i from the first page of the GT4 forums. Might as well discuss it all in one place rather than have 3 separate items going on. 👍

@ theotherspongey: does your TV definitely support NTSC input / output? Are you using a converter for NTSC -> PAL?
How have you got the TV connected? If you're using a component cable, are you sure you've got the right channel selected on the TV?

Just some simple info that'll help us help you instead of guessing what you're up to. ;)
When you go into Options Options --> Screen -->Video Output --> HDTV (1080i), the screen should change and give you 15s to verify the change by selecting OK. You then need to OK out of the original menu and out of the settings menu. None of the menus will change, they don't become 1080i active, it's only when you get to a race screen that the change occurs.

I said that before :grumpy::D

If you live in Europe, and have at least a TV with a "HD Ready" logo on it, your TV must support NTSC as well. There is no converter needed.

Well done. It was also said before in the thread that I initially linked to. Give yourself a pat on the back and a chocolate medal. 👍
I figured, seeing as there were three threads active on the first page alone regarding various issues with 1080i display, that it'd be better if everyone having issues was all discussing it in the same place and thus you can all help one another, (Hey, that's an idea, maybe we should have a discussion forum for this sort of thing! Oh, wait a moment, look at where we are! Magic that! ;)) instead of spread randomly over 3 different threads, and I thought I'd introduce the old thread link in here so that you don't all spend time reinventing the wheel, so to speak.

I've no idea what's wrong with theotherspongey's setup, however, as a technical guy by trade, if she's saying that it has worked in the past, something logically has now changed which is stopping it from working. In my ordinary job, I'd try to solve this by obtaining as much information as possible so that we could deduce what has changed and how to fix it, anything to save a "site visit", however, as I've no intention of flying half-way round the world to have a look at what setup she's got, I'm relying on as detailed an account as possible to try and help out, along with input from everyone else. If everyone seems to be in agreement, then we're probably right, (or at least collectively wrong! :guilty:) so there's no harm in posting something which backs up someone else's point, and you shouldn't be upset by that.

Myself, I still use an old 28" widescreen CRT that's not capable of 1080i output, but I do use a component cable and can display 480p. It's kind of annoying in that the display size changes going from menus to race events as the game switches back between "normal 4:3" image and "480p 16:9" display and I then have to use the TV remote to resize the image back into widescreen mode, but at least it gets rid of those "shakes" that happen in normal mode usually in 2 or 3 places per lap that're awfully distracting.
I do have to ensure that the TV channel is selected as "Component", and that the Browser settings on the PS2 are configured for "YCrCb" output and not standard "RGB", so this is something else you can look out for, as it's only console dependent, not game or TV input dependent. <--- It also mentions this in the thread I linked to, so I was hoping that people would've read it there rather than having to cover it in here again.
It's also worth bearing in mind that in addition to selecting 480p or 1080i output that the screen setting should be configured to 16:9 and not 4:3 otherwise it'll make no difference.

Anyway hope some of this helps and no-one else is offended that I've repeated stuff other people have said before, we're just trying to get vegamarks & theotherspongey up and running as quickly and painlessly as possible. 👍

Right. But even it was posted there, I felt nice and gave an answer to the question. The thread looked more like a discussion, than a tutorial which vegamarks & theotherspongey were probably requesting. In your office you just don't tell the customer to read the FAQ before asking, right? :D

The thread I have opened was more like a showcase, than a question. I've tried to pull everything out of GT4 to show that it looks great in 1080i. But in other side, you're right, there could be a discussion in the end on how to setup the 1080i mode.

I think a good tutorial for GT4 in 1080i, especially for the people in europe, would be more helpful, than 3 merged threads (No offense). But since over 85% (estimated) of GTPlanet users are now focused on GT5, I am not so sure if it would make sense to create a tutorial, since it would be a lot of time investing in this...

I've tried a couple of times but I can't seem to get 1080i working on the actual screen. When I press the screen info button on my remote, it say's it's running on 1080i; but it's obvious to any person that has played on a PS3/PS2that it's not. I have no clue whatsoever what the problem may be. Everything is hooked up fine to the TV and I make sure to use 16:9.

Remove disk from PS2. Go into System Settings. Check your output settings are to use "YCrCb" instead of RGB otherwise you'll get nowhere. Save your system settings.

Can you post us some screenshots of what you're seeing, and also let us know what make/model of TV you're using? I'm by no means a big audio/visual expert, but if you can give us some info it's all helpful and someone around here may know what the issue is. Can you show us the component lead you're using and the TV inputs that it's plugged into too?
My experience with 1080i on GT4, when I hooked it up to our Sony Bravia XBR2 LCD was that it makes the entire image look like it's composed of tiny bricks. :boggled:

Just wondering if you can play GT4 in HD on the PAL version of the game.

Merged yet another thread into this one.
Your question is answered in Post #6 by GTRufus. 👍

Also clicky the link in Post #16 and read Post #4 of that thread for resolutions, aspect ratios and compatible cables. 💡
