I was playing Gran Turismo 3 today.

I noticed that GT3 lacks one important feature for it to be a real driving simulator.

What is that feature you say?

That feature is Neutral. When your in 1st you should be able to downshift to Neutral and then once again downshift to Reverse.

But Polypony Digital made it 1st gear downshifts to Reverse.

Without that how could it possibly be a Real Life driving simulator?

What are your thoughts?

omg dude, like whatever.

I'm expressing my point of veiw, this is a key element in real driving.
So why shouldn't it be in The Real Driving Simulator.

I'm happy with what's in Gran Turismo 3. Gran Turismo 4 will have all the improvements, this should be a key one.

Hahehe, I was just being sarcastic anyway. Answering your question seriously though, I'm sure that neutral would be a good addition to the game; in real life if you spin out you don't just switch straight from 1st to reverse and take off again. It would definetly add to realism.

Actually nuetral is in the game... tap the E-Brake and it should just roll.

If that isn't neutral then what do you consider it

i race my real car, I don't see a need for nuetral in a racing simulator, but i would like to see a racing wheel/pedal set that had a clutch pedal (with a feedback), that would be killer.

haha...exactly...even if there isnt a neutral there should atleast be a clutch. i downshift and overrev when im taking a long turn. that way when i come out of the tunr i just shift up and i get leverage and take off. but there is supposed to be a full 3 pedal 6 gear unit that comes with the gt4 in a combo pack. or so ive heard.

I've really been addicted to just fooling around in GT3 lately.

So I came across this as I was still, and saw the AI coming and I floored the gas and yeah.

Neutral is a must, Auto Modelista had it and I enjoyed that game quite a bit. Though the graphics were abit etchy, overrall if Gran Turismo's realism and Auto Modelista's gameplay were put together.

Killer combo.

a clutch would be great, especially in online-racing. by using the clutch properly, you're gear-changing will be better and you'll have the max available torque. this could be the difference between 1st and 2nd place.

They should make a clutch pedal on the wheels, I think it would be cool if there was a shifting difficulty under options, like
Easy - normal shifting like it is in gt3.
medium - you have to let off the gas to shift
hard - there is a clutch for shifting.

Maybe someday....

Some people tell me that GT3 is too hard to play because it's too real.If there's a clutch pedal .............................I can't imaging

I disagree. The only good reason i see in this thread for having neutral is so he can "hear the engine rev without keeping one of [his] fingers on the brake". Wow. It's been mentioned a million times before:

Just because the game has "real driving simulator" in the title doesn't mean you have an option to turn on the air con, or look at the pretty reverse light, or activate the windscreen wipers or drive through a drive-thru.

no clutch= no neutral
not quite. ever heard of the middle of the H where none of the dog collars are engaged. u can pull out of a gear without pushing the clutch in, u just need the clutch to engage the gear (which isnt exactly true either if u match rpms and have suitable "dog teeth" or whatever u happen to call them and soft syncros). as mentioned before, just tap the e-brake to free roll and hold the brake to rev and do clutch drops. its that simple. maybe neutral would be more realistic to some people but its pretty much already in the game.

I can't see any good use for it. Reverse is used so infrequently. Quite frankly, I find it convienent that you go from Reverse to 1st. Saves time and is a lot easier.

Let's remember that this is a game. And it's a driving simulator. So there are something things about driving that simply won't transpose to the video game world.

One of those things is shifting simply because to make an electronic shifter that resembles a real one would be one of two things. 1) Cheap and not worth the time or 2) Too expensive and not worth the money. I think the DFP by logitech will be just fine.

And where would it be useful to be in neutral in the game? I never just drive around in neutral all day in my stick. Unless I'm slowing down for a light or stop sign. So why would we want to hang in neutral in a video game where there are no traffic controls?

The only possible reason I can see for using neutral in a race is if you really need to save fuel in an endurence or something. But tapping the handbrake works just fine for getting into neutral, and is better than having to downshift 5 times.

Agreed. Neutral is useless. I've never used neutral when tracking or autocrossing my real car.

Clutch would be cool as an option on the wheel. Have any of you guys played Grand Prix Legends? It has a clutch...

The only time neutral would really be needed where it would make it more realistic is if you spin out and neeed to get going. With nuetral its much easier and more realistic to rev it up then put it in first, rather then having it in first and holding the brake.

yeah netrual would be great specially for realistic race starts, drag races and burnouts I use a wheel and reaching for the the triangle button is always an extra pain i mean race cars dont start in first with there foot on the brake!!! and with open wheelers and high horsepower race cars you usually cant go from first to reverse and vice-versa without putting the car in neurtal giving it some revs and then dumping it into first/reverse

Wouldn't work.

While the engine is disconnected from the wheels it requires a constant input of fuel to keep it at tickover. With the engine connected to the wheels and with no throttle input, the wheels drive the engine and no fuel is used at all. The best way to save fuel is not to have the car in neutral, but to have it in gear and not use the accelerator.

Wow, are you sure??? :)

I must remember to try that the next time I drive down from the mountains, leave the car in gear and not use the gas pedal and lo and behold, no fuel used, you have just single handedly found the answer to the world's fuel shortage problems...

Nope, I don't think so....

A three pedal setup with clutch function in the sim would be great though... as an option... for those who want to turn it on/off depending on the realism they wish to encounter.

Having spent my fair share of time on the track driving competitively, I have yet to race a complete race without using the clutch...
