nice rumour!!!!!:

Japanese rumours suggest the next one is going to be big!

Unconfirmed reports from Japan this morning are claiming that Gran Turismo 4, the massively anticipated racer from Polyphony Digital, will be significantly bigger than was initially expected.

Indeed, figures doing the rounds today claim that 2,000 cars will be included, as well as more than 100 tracks - amazing statistics if true.

Time will tell, and not much time at that, given that GT4 is to be unveiled at this year’s E3! We’ll bring you full coverage then.

HOLY CR4P

Well, the key word is "Rumours". I dont really trust the site, yet. Just be skeptical about everything untill there is some proof from PD or Sony because you never know where these things come up...

2000 cars? Whoa! 2000 performance orientaded cars would mean that we would have choices going back to the '50's or earlier! I heard about a 40bhp Beetle being in it.:D With a bunch more veedubs. Scirroco, Corrado?, MK1/2/3/4 GTi....so...we'll see...

2000 cars? Seems unlikely. All the Econo box's and the cars where we say, "Why the h*ll did they put that peice of cr*p in there in the first place?!" will probably be in there. There is not enough space to have that many tracks AND cars...

BTW, each car costs money to design in the game. Lots of money. Then you have to pay for the liscensing, for 2000 cars, then the tracks which take up lots of space and the background designs for the menu screens, sounds, etc...

Yeah I really doubt they will have that many cars and tracks, I mean it would probably take 5 DVD's full to hold all that, and we would be waiting much longer for the game than next year...

I really hope they do have more cars than GT3, and more real life tracks, plus all the original GT1/2 tracks in it. This has been brought up many, many times before, but I feel to compliment Monaco and Laguna Seca, more real life tracks should be in GT4. Tracks like the awesome Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, Monza in Italy, LeMans in France, Sebring in Florida, Road America, Suzuka in Japan (still don't know why they didn't put this in GT3, would have made sense to have their F1 track in the game). And many more.

one car model in GT 2 took a week...

One car model in GT 3 took a month,

reports say GT4 is 50% done (about)

so 2000 cars is going to take a lot of time even with twice the number of people working on cars.. and if its 50% done by now, then they should have done around 1000 cars.. it doesent realy add up does it?

They could have ben talking about cars you could download off the internet. Like with Motor City Online. You start of with a set number of cars but you can win cars and buy cars off the internet (with your came money)...

I agree with you. They are strictly rumours, we still wouldn't know the true story till E3.

Even then we probably still wont know the FULL truth untill the game is released...

That will be next month, an only a handful will be allowed to have a first look at the Two Disc Beta

Well, if GT4 does have 2000 cars, then I think they're most likely to use up 2 DVDs. Its gonna be one BIG game  GT4

yup

It probably take a bunch of DVD's to fit that many tracks and cars. Each car is like 10+ MB's and tracks are even bigger. You'd use up the space on the discs quite quickley. Its just not possible. They would have to spend ALOT of money to model just the cars. Then you have to model all the tracks which is ALOT more money to spend. Then you have to bring all the cars you are going to put in the game and take their real life sounds (by actually getting in and testing the car). They test the cars themselves you know. Just renting the cars and a track for a day is a lot of money. Not to mention making the physics for the cars, then adding the parts you can upgrade, the music (some people like it), the menu screens, sound FX, movement, AI, etc. ITS NOT POSSIBLE ;)...

I don't believe the rumors but if you add the cars up from GT1, GT2, GT3 and GTC you probably get a decent number. GT2 had 600. Lets guess that GT1, GT3 and GTC had 100 cars not in GT2 so you would have 700 without doing much.

2 disc

Yeah. I am not disagreeing with 2 disc maybe even more. 100 tracks won't use small amounts of space believe me.

What I was saying is that as far as cars go they may have had 700 from previous versions that would need minor reprogramming for GT4. I also suspect adding a car is not mega hard. They should have the process down to a fine art now.

Anyway, no one knows until it is in their PS2 and they have the controller in their hand choosing their first car.

Just imagine the prize car list and the like though if it was true.

Depends on how they define a 'car' too - a single model might give rise to a number of 'cars' - think of all the variations on the WRX in its current guise - and if they've re-introduced race mods, then that's another car for each variation.

That said - I do find that number a bit incredible.

Also, 100 tracks? Well, assuming there are mirrors, that instantly becomes 50. And, if you take into account short variations, like the old Grand Valley East, Autumn mini-Ring, SS5 clubman, the numbers fall again - you might find there are actually 'only' 30-40 actual circuits, but with mirrors and short versions that could get to 100 pretty easily.

Also the two disc theory is not really feasable. Yeah you could fit that many cars on multiple discs, but that means one disc wont have certain cars that are on others, and they wont have cars that are on the other discs. Like in GT2 which had around 550 cars (I dont know where you got 700 from). They put that one one disc. The other disc has the same cars, its just arcade mode. Plus they could fit 700 cars on one disc back then because of the amount of polygons on each car. In GT2 there were about a few hundred polygons that made up a car. In GT3 cars were made of thousands of polygons, which means they took up more space. Even if somehow, someway, they were able to get all those cars and tracks, they would have to spend an extreme amount of money on the programmers, modeler's (each car can cost around a thousand $ to make), the liscensing, the track rental (to test the cars and help give them some idea on the physics), the cars need to be tested and their engine notes recorded, on and on and on. The game would be expensive. The things that would need to be put on the disc:

- The Cars (all of them, if there are more than one discs, they need to be on all of them)
- The tracks
- Track interaction (the crowd cheering, the trees swaying etc)
- The cars engine notes
- The cars sound effects (tire squeels etc)
- The game sound effects
- The opponent AI
- The game music (some people like it)
- The menu screens
- The game operations (as in which links do what operation, or say, "When car passes point A, crowd cheers")
- The parts you can add to the cars for EACH car
- What the parts do to each car
- The physics change programs that change the effect of the car when a setup is changed and when cars are upgraded.
- The Races themselves
- The Two player programs
- If online, you need to program alot of things to support it.

It can keep going on and on. Thats only a little that goes into a game like Gran Turismo...

The 700 cars is made up of 550-600 from GT2 plus any cars unique to GT1, GT3 or GTC. I am estimating 100-150 cars that did not exist in GT2 but did in the other games eg Pod, Integra Type R LM Car etc

Anyway I see your point Frustrated Palm.

Could they not make it so that when you buy a car it asks you to swap disks. I know this is messy but to get than many cars maybe this is what they have done.

When you swaps discs, the disc would have to recognize the car. If the car isnt programmed into the disc, the disc wont know what to do with it...

Disc 1 may included the car dealership program for example and maybe even the "showroom" picture of all cars. If you buy a car that is not on disc 1 it would ask you to put in disc 2. It would then get the stuff off disc 2 and possibly save it in the mem card. You would then put disc 1 back in and away you go.

I don't know if PS2s would work this way but that is how it works for PC games.

<Sarcasm>Maybe they are having a 4 disc set.

1. Arcade with 500 cars
2. Sim mode with 500 cars.
3. Online 500 cars
4. ?? New game modes ??

<End Sarcasm>

I don't believe 200 cars or 100 tracks. I think it would be risky for them because it makes it harder for them to get he AI right on all tracks for all cars.

If disc one just had the dealer with the picture, and disc two had the cars, you couldnt race it in Disc one, because the game doesnt know what to put on the screen. Its like saying you saved a McLaren F1 LM from NFS then put in your GT3 and tried to upload it into that...

The fact that really matters to me other than the amount of cars is the possibility of a) being able to have all the cars (or at lest 75%) in one 8Mb memory card, or b) being able to save multiple games on one 8mb memory card... that is what I didn't like in GT2 and what I loved in GT3

2000 cars just seem a bit too much . We still don't know the true number.
