I came Accross it at best buy, only got to skim through it though cuz i was in a hurry i'm wondering if anyone actaully got the guide to see if it explains some of the mysteries in GT4 like the A-spec Points. i also noticed it has an indept mission hall dedicated section. if anyone has the guide i would appreciate it if you could elinghten us on some of these questions. :)

What could a guide possibly tell you that you can't find here? Why would you need a guide for a racing game, anyway?

I guess the guide would help him with the finer aspects of the game?

Actually, a lot of us use the net at work, and can't get on at night to find out something we'd need to know. I, too, would like to know how good this "Official" Guide is... if it's got comments and tips from KY himself, I think it'd be worth the buy. :)

You can NEVER know too much.

How about NOT having a guide and just loose yourself in the game? That'll be more interesting..

But if you ever need some tips, GTplanet is here to cover that.

Funny, I thought that the guide was another way to lose yourself in the game. It's nice to have some data on paper near at hand when playing, it helps enrich the experience. I've got dozens of magazines, car guides and such, lying around, and it really helps me get into the spirit of turismo.

I've got my copy of EVO stashed beside the PS2, for example. The article on Nick Heidfeld around the 'Ring in an M5 is priceless. Love the part where they talk about their fastest 'Ring times in GT4.

The Prima Games guide (which is what you probably saw) is useless as far as a game guide is concerned. It has lots of pretty pictures of cars and some info on them, but the rest is yucho. I've got one, never look at it, it's not really worth the paper it's printed on.

The Piggyback Interactive guide (available at amazon.com.uk, but from what I understand not available for over the counter purchase in the US) is, however, worth buying. It doesn't necessarily give you more info than can be had online at gtplanet.net, but it does has good tuning info, track guides, an excellent mission hall and license overview. I'd recommend this one, bought it from amazon.com.uk.

lol its not that i need the guide there just some things maybe the developers answered on guide that we didn't know yet. trust me i'm the last person to need the guide, but maybe having it around can add to the gtplanet repertoire, you never know. 👍

I for one think that there should be an interactive database of all the possible lineups for every possible car/race/mods/points. I have lost track of the time I have wasted looking for a line up/ car/mods combo that would suit me or bob for a particular race. I have also lost track of the number of posts I have read (even from the high point guys) complaining about this.

It would really make anyone's life easier if you could say: "I feel like a 50 pointer race today... wonder if there are any in Cote D'Azur... mmm.. ohhh lookie here... 52 points with the R92C on N1 tires, no downforce and one wheel missing against the Renault clio Sport on R3 tires, the Cien on SMs, the RAM on RSH, the Punto with Stage 17 turbo and the Caterham with a huge wing on it!... MY KIND OF RACE!!"

I reckon it would greately enhance re-playability if you can ask the database "how many different races could I do with $400k on cars with no less than 348HP and no more than 500HP for at least 167 points"

Not to mention that you could save lots of people's time and frustration by finding out in less than 20 seconds how many races can you enter with that 'fantastic' piece of hardware you just won at the 'WTF KINDA PRICE IS THIS' Cup.

Don't get me wrong, there is a tremendous amount of information in this board (and others) but you can understand why so many people ask the same darn questions about the GTWC. A quick search will return you pages upon pages of info on this series that would take you two days to read through and realize that 80% of the posts were not useful to you because they were by guys whose goals were completely different to yours.

If there was such interactive database it would be possible to have more meaningful exchanges with people who have done the races with the same car/setup as you. As an example, I did the Like the Wind race a few days ago with the Escudo for 75 points. Someone else used the same setup for 200 points and yet another person could not understand how we got such differing amount of A-spec points. It would have been easier to say "I just did this race with the Escudo on setup no xxxx against field no xyys and beat it by 0.073 seconds". There would have no unnecessary exchange of posts trying to work out why only 75 points and whether beating it by 0.073 seconds was a harder/easier win than 0.012 seconds against a different field. Not to mention I would have known to look a little harder for the 200 point lineup :-)

Finally, it would be possible to see races (car/mods/opponents) that you may enjoy and would otherwise not know were there because you gave up after 45 minutes of endlessly trying turbo 1, 2, supercharger, etc only to be unlucky enough to change your setup after checking out 17 different fields when the 'perfect' one would have been the 18th lineup on your first setup...

If I let myself get carried away I can even see very interesting online competitions where you are allowed to spend $X and have to run at least $Y races and achieve a minimum of Z a-spec points.... I think my brain is going to explode just considering the possibilities!!

ON TOPIC: Personally I think the manual supplied with the game could have been far more elaborate, and answered things like what the fuel units are, why a-spec points are useless, and other mysteries which this forum can only answer with guesswork. Having to pay extra for a guide to learn some basic fundamentals on which the game is based really bites.

The GT4 Prima Guide is more of an everyday car book than a strategy guide. It features good infos and ideas, but it's just not deep enough on the game. The license guide is completely useless as it only gives minor advices. So if you just want strategy, i'll suggest to look somewhere else.

However, an interesting part of this guide is the Dictionary and "Did you know?" that shows on many pages.

Here are a few excerpts:

Did you know?
With its cars reaching speeds near 200 m.p.h., AC was reportedly the reason why a 70 m.p.h. speed limit was set in England in the 1960s.

Did you know?
The six stars in the Subaru logo represent the Pleiades star cluster, a symbol of the five companies that merged to form Subaru's parent.

GT4 Dictionary
What is a VTEC-less cam conversion?
On a race car normally equipped with a standard VTEC cam system, some tuners have elected to replace the primary cam with a specially designed VTEC cam, making the car drive in VTEC mode all of the time. As you can imagine, the powerband is incredible and it creates a much more explosive car all across the board. This modification is both intricate and expensive, though, as it requires complete replacement of the car's computer system.

Well thats rubbish for a start, Pleiades star cluster is actually 7 major stars, hence the name "seven sisters", hence the race in the Subaru garage named after the seven sisters.

I guess you should give a call to Prima then! ;)

Bits of info in the manual wud have been gud, but obviously with them knowing they will sell a guide, why waste money on making a free in box manual!

Tbh the biggest manual ive ever seen was for one of the Fallout series on PC, it was huge!! and was really good.

I think it wud have been a gud idea to include lil facts like the above, whichever the 5/7stars it is! Also is it jus me, or is the scrolling info about the cars/companies and parts annoying as?!?! Should be a form of pull down or something!!!

or.. even better.. in a manual!!

I know wot people mean about the power/cost/drive thing tho - wud be useful to have the facts in front of u at all times!

Meh, the GT4 guide was a rehash of the Versus Books GT3 guide, without many of the nice touches like individual track tuning suggestions and corner difficulty ratings and pretty pictures of ALL the cars. The GT series historical stuff and GT4 behind-the-scenes info was interesting though.

I bought the thing simply as a collector of GT stuff - but it is pretty much useless,t he only thing I use it for anymore is the unlock list in the back (it's easier to flip to that than hop on-line)

It's pretty and has some interesting things in it, but it's not a 'strategy guide' at all it's for those folks that really have no clue about racing, or can't get on-line and look for stuff.

As someone mentioned earlier, it would have been useful if they would have actually listed tracks/cars allowed/tire restrictions/mod restrictions/#of laps etc for each race in the game but they didn't.

If you're a collector of GT memorbellia (SP?) then it's worth it, if you're a casual fan then it *might* be worth it (but you wouldn't be reading my comments in this forum if you were ;) )

My 2 cents

Why would you use a guide for any game? It's cheating.

Especially for racing games like GT, because for the most part everybody develops their own style of driving.

Cheating? How is it possible to cheat in GT4...? By the way, the "everybody develops their own style of driving" comment... no, no, no. For someone who doesn't have basic knowledge about driving techniques, it wouldn't be considered cheating if a guide gave them information and shared techniques about racing. For example, if someone would learn techniques such as early braking, or out-in-out (probably the only two techniques I know :) ) in a racing school, would you consider that cheating? I dont understand... how is it cheating?

I'd Still like to have one with ALL the cars in it so I could look at pics and not GT4's horrible organization of names. :grumpy:

That is SO damn true.

As according to Jeremy Clarkson, the AC Cobra brought pleasure to the few at the expense of everybody else.

Well, since most people can only see six stars (although with the pollution as it is, five really is realistic), that's not their problem, it's Subaru's.

Why would you use a guide for any game? It's cheating.

So, someone who purchased a football strategy book to improve their game would also be cheating then. Or someone who paid for tennis lessons from a professional coach. They would be cheating too, especially if the coach gave them specific tips on how to exploit the weaknesses of a particular opponent and therefore beat them.

Professional boxers must be cheats too because they take tips from their coaches between rounds in a bout.

So are all the F1 drivers when their manager contacts them on the radio halfway through a race and tells them to speed up or slow down, or to pit now rather than in two laps time because it will give them an advantage over the guy in front, or help them to avoid the slow traffic they are catching up to. :boggled:

And you can't cheat in a driving sim. You're either fast or slow, and that's it. A strategy guide might tell you how to get that extra bit of speed, but it still hangs on the skill of the driver.

I bought the guide and it is useless. The only good thing about it is the car list and the unlock list and you can find that anywhere. Not worth it.

Using a guide in GT4 is NOT cheating.

Using a guide to find the solution to problems in other games is cheating.

For somebody who doesn't have a basic knowledge of driving techniques would eventually figure it out, if not by practice then by watching the computer.

I am not 100% sure of this but wasn't there a guide to racing lines in an instruction book from some GT game?

Sorry for the confusion.
