GT4 online: Why it will suck

GTP should get an irc channel set up by the time GT4 releases (or does it have one already?) , for meeting racing opponents.

Those guys that dont' use brake when getting into the corner, they just crash right into your rear end. They just dont have skills at ALL. When I play PGR2 Live, i really hate those guys that just never use brakes and bump right into your rear or try to slap you in the straight way. This kind of 'touch' aren't acceptable.
But on the other hand, take a look on those Touring car race in Europe, they always touch each other very lightly, so you can't really said bumping each other is 'cheating or what'...the real world racing is like that as well.

The only problem with implementing a shunt from behind penalty is you will have to work out a 'pressure' gauge. The problem I can see is people will slam their brakes on early in a bend so they can get the person behind to ram into them and get banned.
You have to realise that some people brake later than others, and others alot earlier.
 
okay I'm in a hurry so I don't have time to read this whole thread, but I just have this to say...

1. To stop normal hybrids (ones stored in the garage) they could just make it use the Arcade mode cars. Yeah it would lock out a good number of the cars probably and all your setups and whatnot, but other than it taking forever to check and compare everyone's car when they logged in... so which had you rather do? wait and race with your own setups or go with arcade cars and race right then?

2. I don't think you should be banned for running into someone. I know more than once while doing a race I've looked away cuz I heard somthing for just a second and then I looked up and was ramming an AI car or the wall. Warn first time, then ban for like 24 hours. After about 4 bannings (maybe 5) ban them forever, because then you'd know they were doing it on purpose.

3. The penalty system should still be in play, but, you shouldn't be dropkicked outta a race just cuz ya get off the track. You might be driving a car for the first time and expecting it to do a certain way in a sharp turn but it does another way and ya slide off the track and theres all four wheels in the grass. The way some want it, you'd be outta the race right then. A bit harsh ain't it? I'm sure it'd piss you off if it happened to you for a small mistake.

But, really, are the people who race online console games really that poor of sportsmans?

I race Daytona, Talladega all the time in NR2003, where cars are bumper and most of the incidents are caused by guys not using their head. 1 in 8 races there will be a guy who trys to wreck everyone but most of the races have a 'boss' who usually will boot the wrecker and restart the race.

I found that alot of people online with the PC are very trustoworthy to race with and dont take cheap shots. I guess the problem is bad with consoles. Look at this pic. Instead of running me into the inside wall the online driver gives me just enogh room to stay on the inside. The finish line is just 400 meters up the road, yet he insists on a good finish, when he could have pushed me into the barrier.
 
Earth, if that was me, I would have smashed you in to the wall, then turned around, forfitting the race just to smash your car in the oblivion.

1) I have issue with Hybrid cars in online racing. Using a garage editor and putting say a PT cruiser body over an F1 chassis, that is lame. I am sure PD could set it up that any car that has been modified in anyway other than what you can do in your SIM garage wouldn't get in. Sorta like when you try to enter a race in GT3 with a car that doesn't qualify, it won't let you in. Other than that as long as the hp or PWR is around the same you should have ok racing. Part of racing is figuring out how to get max performance within the rules. If the race says "max 500hp @ 2.300" PWr then it is up to you to figure out what car will work the best there. I also think there is room for arcade racing, spec class racing, base model racing and tuner racing. The more there is in online mode the people will find something they like. There might even be a place for hybrid racing, but that would have to be it's own special class that you enter knowing full well you could meet a Mazda Miata with a 787b chassis.

2) Contact is part of racing, especially racing with cars with bumpers (i.e. not open wheel). Trading paint fighting for a line into a turn is part of what auto racing is. However ramming someone from behind at 200mph is no, nor is wall riding and nor is ramming the wall at 200mph and coming back to win. There should be limits to contact. If you fly into the wall, you are out of the race (like it would be in real life). If you trade some paint, within reason, fine. If you intentionally spin someone out, then you get a penalty (forced pit, if you don't do it then you are out of the race). I don't think people should be banned. I think "rooms" or race leagues will naturall form with people who know each other and trust each others skills. Sorta like when you go onto IRC and enter a room where people know and trust each other and it takes a while as a newbie build trust and become part of the group. I've raced on-line in a few GT3 leagues on other message boards. After a while you know who is above the board and who is a cheater. I think all that will play out in GT4 online.

3) Track offs are again part of racing. Not everyone is perfect all the time, even Micheal Shumacher has off days. Like real life racing if you "off" results in a gained spot then you give that spot back or receive a penalty. If you cut a chicane or corner to gain a spot same deal. If you take a corner wide or miss your brake point and slide off into the grass so be it, as long as you didn't slam the wall or beach yourself in the kitty liter (I hope GT4 gravel traps will be just that, traps) put it back in first and re-join the race.
 
I haven't read through all the pages, but NFSUnderground was online for PS2 and with PC...there have been cheats, but not as rampant as EA was always good to put up fixes and patches.

I really only played the DRIFT mode online in that game, and having a faster car or better stats etc.. didn't always mean a win. It actually took skill to win at Drift.

I am not going to tell PD how to fix a known issue with online games, but I can hope that they take these potential problems and address them before release.
 
Actually, Underground was riddled with cheaters, and most of them were from the PC front, because they could easily hack their game files. The records tables were filled with impossible times, and a lot of cars had 100% all stats, which is impossible to get normally. Drifting online kinda sucked too, because anytime anyone touched you, you'd get zero points for your drift.

Not letting PC users on the same servers would have cut at least 80% of the problems.
 
Yep, we paid a pretty hefty price in a lot of respects for PC/PS2 interoperability in NFSU. The racing itself was horrid, every single race I was rammed and spun by someone, without fail.

The datafile for a car is what, 5k? If they can check all my client variables in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory down to a finite range, I'd say they can do the same to make sure things match up. I'd wait an extra 15 seconds on server startup to ensure a clean race, or you could have the chat server check the car file the player has selected to use in the BG whilst they select a race, and just DC them if they're cheating.

a nobody? You saying I suck? How about no. I don't spend 50% of my time playing GTA, or Halo, and that.

I spend about 92% of my life around cars. Whether real or game. I study lines, models, etc. I don't just race the course for the hell of it. Everytime I play free run on GT3 arcade, I spend maybe a half hour just going through the course with a car I like (Ruf RGT) and get used to the course with that car, and see where I can get the most out of the car. So don't say I'm a nobody.

I'll probably be beating over 50% of the newbs and guys who play online.

I think those whos solution to cheating is to only race with people you trust or to ban people are missing the point. I know on xbox live the actual racing is just for fun, but it does not provide the competition I am looking for. Only the time trials provide this and you can't avoid or ban cheats there. There will be similar time trials and lap records recored in GT4 and just like in every online racer I can think of these records will be taken by cheats.

It really takes the fun away.

This fact is true with most every sports game.

Madden 2005 for example, you got guys who are rankd #1 and have records of 56-3. Theres no way anyone can win that much. Some probably didnt use gameshark etc but used inherint bugs in the game, to compare, cutting the grass or wall riding in a race sim is the same as running no huddle/constantly scrambling with QB/doing same play over and over again (if you audible to match their play they audible just as quickly to a different play

It is really sad people resort to such low human behavior. They have no sense of competition or self respect. Being #1 is all that matters to them. As in Madden I played one guy who ran THE SAME offensive play ALL GAME. These people are really pathetic
 
its almost 100% sure there's goin to be cheatin or sum kind of explotation of a glitch. Its online and inevitable....its ppl vs ppl, human vs human and the human instinct would alwys be a factor.....there r too many ppl thse days who only cares about winnin and don care/respect others......too much ego...too much pride........its either becuz they lack knowledge or they just don wnna use it........videogames r entertainment not life.....so instead of worryin about cheaters jus try to have fun online......thats the whole point of videogames........ right???

^ That doesn't make sense. We're not missing the point at all - we're acknowledging that cheating will probably happen, and we're proposing a viable, legitimate, effective solution to it. What more could you ask for? We already have systems like this implemented, in a variety of places...

Places such as making friends in real life... you tend to stick to speaking to people that you like and trust instead of people you now are pricks or wankers...

It's just another form of darwinian society...

What solution would you propose? Seeing as how none of us work for or have any influence in Polyphony Digital, the most we can do is hope they get things right, and if they don't, all we can do is "ignore it and hope it goes away," as you so concisely put it.

Code, are you in any way related to anyone called "CowOfWar"? I used to talk with him at another forum. You remind me of him. He was a really sarcastic, condescending sunova*****.

Really? This is how I see it panning out:

1. Race online.
2. Someone cheats.
3. Don't race the cheat again - the four other guys do this too.
4. Find someone else to race with you and the four other guys.
5. Cheat's username gets circulated as a cheat.
6. Carry on racing.
7. New people are continually brought into the fold as "someone you trust".
8. Cheats cannot race against anyone, because their names are so widely known.
9. Cheats race against other cheats. Probably more than one of them gets pissed off with other cheats and stop racing.
10. There are now two brackets - people who you trust and will race against, and people who are cheats and cannot race against anyone but other cheats.

Looks like a solution to me.

This happens already with online databases. People who are perceived to be cheating - there's usually a fair crack of the whip, and time given to prove themselves in some way - are banned from them. Their user details (name, e-mail address, date of birth, location, IP) are circulated to the other database sites. The eventual end product is clean, honest databases with a continual influx of honest new guys and cheats (who are subsequently banned), and The Racer's Edge, which is just one big cheat-a-thon.

then dont let them...........theres 1000++++ ways not to let cheaters ruin ur fun and if ur smart enuf ull find out a way.......just becuz sum1 cheats doesnt mean u cant hve fun anymore becuz if u don....... then ur no better than them. Go play sports or sumthin and ull kno wut i mean......
 
My friend has the wierdest strategy for Live racing games (RSC2, PGR2, etc.)

If someone bumps him, he bumps back.

Actually, I wouldn't even call it strategy. Just a way of getting back.
