Data time.

So far, GT series has sold in more then 35 million copies, making it the best-selling game series of all times. GT3 was a best-seller by selling in more then 13 millions worldwide. Term "GT series" consists of GT, GT2, GT3, GTC and GTP on all 3 territories.

As for income, GT series has earn Sony a gross of over 1,5 billion dollars before taxing. For earning an lousy 1,000,000 $ in gross you only need to sell about 30,000 copies if you are both publisher and developer. If you are Sony, then you are also a distributer so more money stays in your poor hands.

As for GT4, just imagine 72 millions PS2 sold worldwide and feel free to predict about 20 million games in next 3 years, GTMobile for PSP included in that, in fact very pessimistic, prediction.

Check out this chart I created. GT4 is trending to definately outsell GT3. Which will pit total revenue for the series at almost 2.5 billion dollars.

Nice chart, but I think GT4 will sell more than that.

IT will sell very well I predict, but honestly I don't know what "number figures" are "very well" *shrugs*.

Yamauch has just recently in the past few months bought a Ford GT, so I say he is doing quite well considering how much the GT cost in the US alone, yet to import one to Japan...:)

umm, Ford GT costs approx. $149,000? thats pocket change for the guy who created Gran Turismo...did you look at the chart? Overall revenue for the series is billions of dollars!! I would say Polyphony Digi. has a budget of well over $50-100 million dollars!! And I would guess Kazunori Yamauchi is worth well over 10-15 million dollars...

Yes I know; did you read my post? Where did I say he pulled out a loan..:p

Edit: Yeah, It's about $150,000; although, Imported to Japan. Not sure how much that would run, $280,000?

You guys seem to be missing one key point about your financial estimations; Sony does NOT get every penny of a video games sell price. The retailer gets a piece of that price. Next, I noticed that you times the unit sales by $50.00. This is wrong for several reasons. One, not all games retailed for 50 bucks. GT and GT2 had a full retail price of 40 bucks. Next, most of those sales were not at the full retail price. I bet more than half were at the PS2 and PS3 discounted price of 20 bucks. Don't forget to take in account the cost of the game, the cost of everything involved, which is way too much to list.

Well you're right but think of it this way, how many PS2 consoles has Gran Turismo sold? I know quite a few people including myself that own a PS2 for no other reason as to play GT. But think about how many PS2's gran turismo has sold, and howmany games those people then bought?

Gran Tursimo is a major sales of driver not only of PS2 consoles but also other games!

So if you look at it's TOTAL sales effect you would probably see an even more dramatic sales effect.

Even if you half the net revenues it is still over a billion dollars! How many game franchises have made more than a billion dollars?

You do know that Sony loses money when they sell a PS2? Well, that was true a while ago, but maybe not now. I read a financial report on the sale report of the PS2 when the PS2 first came out. It said the PS2 cost Sony 675 bucks a pop. Even today, I bet a PS2 sells for less then what its worth. If a PS2 is purchased for the sole purpose of playing GT3, then Sony lost out.

I think it will. The PS2 has a much broader base than the Xbox.. even if 100% of Xbox owners bought Halo2, and only 50% of PS2 owners bought GT4, it'd still outstrip Halo2.

Solid, sorry for having to correct you - I know this is tending to become one of those "JerkOffFanboy" conversations - but Sony is the only manufactorer that have never lost a dollar in selling its console. Microsoft did, and so did Nintendo. But Sony has never. They've even cut the costs in first year of selling, while the price itself was very high (I payed my first PS2 high as 450 Deutche Mark - which was around 250$ at that time), with tending to cut the costs even further in last 5 years. Today - by price tag of 150$ - Sony earns a lot because the console can't cost them more then 30$ in production. And new model will cut the cost even more.

Bussines model for PlayStation brand is very keen - every publisher has to pay a certain amount of money just to release a PS game. Then Sony earns on selling the developer and debugg tools. And they've cost like an 1928. Bentley. In last year and half Sony dumped the proces for developer tools. If there is someoone involved in game-making here, he could say the exact numbers, but they just earn. Losing is not an option.

As for my calculaton goes, I took an middle price that USA uses for calculating the game revenue in gross before the taxing. As the series has sold in 35 million copies, times 42$ for the game, it is something about 1,5 billion. Only in software, without the bundles, extra controllers, wheels (Logitech has to pay a percentage for licencing from each wheel sold) memory cards and consoles itself. After giving a money to a retailer (and it is not more then 10%, I assure you), Sony has to cover the transport costs, operating costs, production costs, developing costs, Marketing (with big "M") and payments to all the pepole in the process.

Just by assuming that after all of that thay have like 5$ of pure proffit, it leves them a decent sum of 245 000 000$ in pure proffit which is a serious money. After taxing (and let's say it is an 25%). they are still there with 200M in just one game.
