Hi again, GT fans.

After taking a look at screenshots and maybe playing Gran Turismo 4: Prologue, I created this topic to discuss the changes in GT4 in terms of a topic I rarely discuss- rally.

The GT4 rally experience should be more challenging than GTs 2 and 3. I say this because a lot of the rally courses will be more narrow. Anyone who has seen endless pictures of the Grand Canyon course know what to expect as racers try and wing their rally machines through the toughest rally trails.

Personally, I think the Escudo should be matched up against Dakar machines and some more of the high-horsepowered rally cars of the past. Including the "world-recognized ugly car maker" (besides Daihatsu, except for the Storia) Lancer. The Delta S4 from GT2 was from 1983 or 1985, and I was surprised about its handling capabilities. It packs 400+ turbocharged horsepower, and the handling is impressive for a car that ugly. If I wanted to see some more rally cars, here are some picks of mine:

The Lancia Stratos is mid/rear, but it is quite unique. Maybe I'm not big on RWD on rally courses, but it is unique and pretty fun to be in, even if your RWD driving skills stink.

There was a mean-looking Peugeot 9-something that was a hillclimber. It would be interesting to see a car go to work. A showcar would be a Peugeot 406, but modified with two high-capacity engines, and an Escudo-style rear wing. That should be good for like... 800hps?

And now, to save the best for last. I seen it on the "Goodwood Festival of Speed" here on the Speed Channel- the Toyota Tacoma Pikes Peak truck. I think this is the truck that could hold a candle to the Escudos. I remember seeing it on TV back in 1999. It was Rod Millen vs. Nobihiro Tajima. Millen won, and almost climbed the mountain in under 10 minutes.

Anyone want to talk rally here for GT4? Come on in, folks!

I'd like to see the Peugot 205 T16 and the Lancia 037 rally AND road versions for both.In GT3 and GT4P on the replays, just under the wheels u can see the dust effect but it seems like its clipping or something, maybe PD can address this for the full version.

I'd like to see all the Group B rally cars including the race and road versions of the awesome Ford RS200. My favourite drift car in GT2. :(

The Bowler Wildcat, it was on Top Gear at the start of 2003. Its insane. Look it up on google, its wicked sick.

give me some of the rothman's porshces, the new mitsubishi lancer WRC04, the new 306 and some classic dakar or rally raid trucks. Some classic 1960s rally mini's would be nice too....

I must say after playing the grand canyon rally in GT4P I'm impressed. It feels ALOT different than GT3 or just a normal car on a slippery surface (like GT3 does)....it really feels as though you are driving on loose surface with a AWD car. The way you need to brake and turn in is alot different now....basically it is a new set of rally skills. I was also happy to see the 03 WRC spec imprezza on there, Solberg's winning car. it's nice to drive it around the rim of the GC.

That means more wall-riding. :irked:

I like your enthousiasm, but I prefer wide open courses where I can choose my line without touching the wall before/in/after every corner.

Read the rules for Dakar cars the last years : 4WD have a minimum weight of +/- 1500 kg with +/- 300 HP. 2WD (don't call these heavy-weights "buggies") weigh at least 1100 kg. No match for a WRC, let alone a Group B or a Pikes Peak car.

And maybe the Dakar cars - including the Bowler Wildcat - LOOK wild, put them aside a SCORE off-road racer and they become unhearable and invisible. - and you do not hear this from a patriotic american :)

They should have a few Pikes peak cars like the RS200 EVO Pikes peak, the Toyota Celica and Tacoma Pikes peak cars, the Suzuki Cultus, Escudo and Aerio Pikes peak car (the Aerio is the current champion) the 405 T16 Pikes peak and the Audi Quattro Pikes peak.

I want this Beetle :

Or Troy Herbst Trophy Truck :

I can say that the GC track in Prologue looks narrow, but it's really not any different than tracks like Tahiti Circuit. The feel of the rally mode is a bit more refined than GT3, but it's not a whole new world.

I was dissapointed with the rallying in GT : P tbh, its better than GT3's but still not as good as it could be. The cars dont seem to actually make contact with the ground they just slide over a magical layer above the track surface. The tyres don't feel like there trying to bite into the ground if you know what I mean... :odd:

Still most rally games are like that, hope Richard Burns Rally breaks that trend :)

GT dominated road racing. If they want to challenge rally, Colin McRae Rally is the hottest games out there. I recall playing CMR2 on my PC. This is going to be a challenge if GT wants to sweep road racing and rally, it will be a tough deal.

But have you lost your faith in Polyphony Digital?

I prefer ten times to play my PSOne copy of CMR2 to playing GT3s rally courses, particularly just because of that, they're courses, not stages from point A to point B. Not that I'm saying I want PD to make stage format tracks, they're just the best way to enjoy rallying.
There's also something to be said for pace notes. Whether you need them or not, they're still a big part of having the rally experience.

To me, I haven't really been cool with point-to-point races. I mean, you have only once to go through a certain section. You screw it up, you're done. But I know real rally races are P2P races. Polyphony Digital is doing their best to make the most of the rally experience. Heck, even if GT4 was all-rally focused, I think PD would still offer a great enough experience.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb offered lots of old and new cars challenging the rally-like course. And man... when I seen the Toyota Tacoma Pikes Peak truck, I was like... damn! Why so? The car had some serious acceleration. The thing could carefully navigate the small road sections. And when it crossed the line, the throttle was on 100%.

To me, if you want to make the Escudo shake in its boots, look no further than the Toyota Tacoma PP (Pikes Peak). I mean, I'd want to own both the cars in GT4 even if they don't have working lights for dark situations. Any more rally talk?

And as an off-topic note, happy belated 18th birthday to Charlotte Church! As another off-topic note, I finally seen some videos of Gran Turismo Concept. Good stuff. And good job by the people who helped provide the video coverage.

As mentioned, I'd love to see some classic rally cars. They can still deliver. And what about (if there is such a thing) vintage rally races. Now, what about classic rally cars squaring off a-la Goodwood?

Your ideas are still welcome. This topic is fair game. No need to let this topic fizzle out and die while someone tries to fish through the GT4 topics looking for good topics like this one. Still fair game, folks.

I must say that I for one do find the GT4 Prologue version of Rally infinitely better than the Rally in GT3, and it certainly matches or even improves on CMR4. Believe me, with a 2'20.7 for Lesson 40 and a 2'22.1 in the Ford Focus (both 100% clean) I have certainly tested ... ;) The improvement is most clear when you try to drift - this actually works and feels awesome. You have to run the track by steering with the accelleration as much as with the wheel.

There is nothing wrong with tracks instead of stages, as there are official rally races out there that are run on tracks (f.i. in Germany and Finland), but it wouldn't hurt PD to have a few stages in there too. Trouble is it doesn't at all fit their physics engine. Hopefully we get as much of Pikes Peak as possible though.

Not everything has to be realistic though - 2 player rally racing doesn't normally exist in real-life, but it's great fun in GT4 and I wouldn't mind it being extended to 4 or 6 players either. :D

I don't have GT4 - P but I have to say that I sure as hell don't play GT4 for the rally experience, give me CMR4 and WRC3 anyday and use GT games for my racing fix.

I so far have agreed with you - but in GT4 P rally feels just so good, and the Grand Canyon track is great, that for the first time I both really enjoy rallying and have the feeling I'm doing something that approaches reality. You will know what I mean as soon as you get a chance to drive this for yourself.

By the way, dcr22B, Zer0h, a member of this site, is looking for people from Ireland to race with ... Be sure to get in touch! iLink racing (with up to 6 players) is probably the best thing GT3 has to offer!
