GT4 vs TRD3

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to log this thread, sorry if i'm wrong.

Basically I've just bought a game racer and a logitech DFP because I didn't get into GT4 enough when I originally got it. I've started playing with it and am absolutely loving it. I've just noticed that Toca Race Driver 3 is coming out. Could someone please explain what the pros and cons of each game are? I understand that everyone on this forum is biased towards the GT series, but I'd like to see what you guys have to say and to find out which is better.

:odd: you can search more on each game here but the biggest differences...

GT4 = Photomode

RD3 = Damage

Besides that RD3 can be played on PC but GT4 has the better graphics.

Ok.

TRD3: over 100 championships, including official DTM, V8 supercars, british GT and indycar, plus many others like rallying, group b, karting, lawnmowers etc. Something like 90 official world circuits (including variations) and including 3 rally stages, 3 kart tracks and another thing. Sophisticated damage engine, all internals can break realstically, real racing physics, real racing rules, pro career mode where you choose a discipline and climb the ladder, e.g. go for open wheelers, start off in karting and work all the way up to F1 for the chance to race on the BMW Williams F1 team. Its about as realistic as it gets in accurate portrayal of Motorsports, honestly it has everything, from realistic AI and crashes, to being able to get stuck in gravel traps. This ill be the game of 2006. Also has 900 degree capability and online functions.

GT4: over 700 cars, the nordschleife, its Gran Turismo, 900 degree capability.

Its harder to list things for GT4, what i do know, is both games are simulations (with TRD3s sim settings all on), both games are/will be enjoyable, personally i think i will enjoy TRD3 more mainly because im more of a motorsports person and it will be more my kind of racing game than GT4.
 
wow, great knowledge! Thanks. From what you have said it seems that TRD3 is much more motorsport based. One of the things I like about GT4 is that it has normal cars in there too, i.e. S4, RS4, M3, M5, vws, peugeots etc, does TRD3 have the same? Will I be able to race on a track with a normal car as well as the motorsport cars?

One of the things I don't like about GT4 is that its difficult to see all the race cars, and there aren't many available (unless I assume you start unlocking them).

How do they differ in terms of format? By that I mean playability, ease of getting through menus, the things in the game that aren't the actual racing
 
I think it's more championship orientated, race cars and such, so I dont think there will be any stock cars in the game.

It's pretty much all race cars, theres a few road cars mainly Honda's, but your talking about 3 or 4 at the most. Instead you get monster trucks, NASCAR style racers, dune buggies, go-karts, F1 cars, GT sportscars, lightweight sportscars, touring cars from the DTM and AVESCO and much more.

It will be coming to America, well at least its what i have read.

Like Ashley said, it's harder to list things for GT4. I mean, heck, I almost never race in GT4 unless it's to win a car for tuning. And that's all I do: tuning. After 192 cars, I'm quite frankly bored of doing that, and I'm only doing requests now. I do photomode also, but taking the pics isn't fun. Only the editing is. If I didn't have PSP8, I wouldn't do photomode.

Don't get me wrong, GT4 is a great game, but when you start to reach the 60-70% mark, it doesn't really become all that fun. The excitement of 700 cars and the graphics dwindle away.

I personally can't wait for TRD3, and it'll be a game that I'll buy at launch, instead of waiting 3 weeks and renting.

You are very stereotypical. People will decide whether to buy it or not whether it's a good game. Plus it has a variation of NASCAR in it (they're Dodge stock cars, and they look very, very similar to NASCAR cars).
 
Yes, and the nascar variation is in the demo and is actually pretty fun:D.

I compeltely agree with duck, i never race in GT4, the only reason i still play it is the online events such as WRS and photomode.

I wasn't as impressed with the PC demo, it felt blatantly like a console port and sufferd because of it I couldn't configure my DFP properly in the game or anything, but the PS2 version should work better. But I can't play online with my PS2, decisions decisions.
 
Simple:

TRD3 is a racing game

GT4 is a driving simulator

Yes, there's a certain amount of cross-over (a large slice of cross-over actually) but really, they both have different aims. With GT4's small field of crappy A.I. cars - i get more enjoyment from buying, tuning and improving my lap times then i do from 'racing'. If i want a good race i'll play one of the (Toca) Race Driver games, the racing element is much more compeling.
 
Aside from the fact that being a driving simulator, it poorly "simulates" actual driving, as you cannot do actual donuts, burnouts, drifts (realistically), etc.

Only get the PC version if your computer can withstand installing their dangerous copy protection scheme. Starforce has the very real possibility of making your PC blue screen or not work at all. Reports from some demo users still report this happening with version 3, just as they did with version two.

There is no way I'd let Starforce anywhere near my PC, including installing GTR, but the ultimate choice is yours. I'm getting a console version and avoiding the whole issue.

I'd always play and buy games on my playstation as oppose to my pc because i can sit on my sofa, or in the case of GT4 my game racer, and watch it on TV. is there really that much difference between games on the different formats?

i'm sure that this is blasphemous, but i actually started playing NFSU2 with the DFP and game racer and although its unrealistic, its highly entertaining. maybe more so than GT4. i'm not really sure what i'm looking for in a game, i just like the fun aspect, i get bored of them quite quickly - hence my question about TRD3. I want to know if I should buy it? From the discussion so far, my thinking is yes, because it seems that they are not competing in the exact same market....?
 
I think you're right...

GT = more of a driving sim
ToCA = more of a racing sim

It's all fun, so get both.

One huge thing we forgotten to mention, is race driver 3s clutch integration, full clutch use is in the game, obviously would be difficult without a clutch pedal but its there unlike GT4..
 
I just want to point out that the TRD 3 damage system isn't that realistic. I tested it, in the 2nd version of the demo, by slamming into a concrete wall at 180km/h, 90degrees. All it did was pop one wheel out, loosen the bumper (didn't even come off), shattered the windshield. Nothing else. Now, whoever said it was realistc shoudl be shot. Try hitting a concrete wall at 100km/h even would kill you, and destroy your car. I can't believe 180km/h.

Oh, I have first-hand experience what happens to a car when it gets T-boned at 100km/h, I lived. 👍 Thank Volvo and their S80s.👍
 
There is now one less difference between these two games.

ToCA3 gets to have a rearview mirror, when in the 1st person view, for all platforms. This was a last minute add-in, just before going gold.

One thing that's always bugged me about TOCA was being able to pick any car, pick any track, and race, or just drive. Based on TOCA2, anyway.. even after you beat various championships and unlocked certain cars, you were still limited as to what you could drive where. You had to pick the championship you wanted, then you were limited to just certain tracks.. then you had only a limited selection of cars to pick from to drive there.

Always bugged me.. I've gotten used to GT, where I can just pick a track, pick a car, and go.

I haven't played the demo yet... this is one of those circumstances where the demo seems rather pointless.. you pre-order the game, THEN you get to play the demo. Wazzup wit dat? This is one that I'll need to play before I decide whether or not to buy it. Next month's OPM has a demo that I'll be checking out, though.

Now turn the simulation settings (including damage) on.

Yeah, this has always bugged me aswell, but I still think TRD is worthwhile, so I´ll buy the 3 too!
 
Players have been able to get around this selection problem in ToCA2 and, AFAIK, it won't exist in ToCA3 (or the same loophole will exist).

Also, I have since learned that the AI adjusts to each type of racing car: opened tire (AI won't bump) vs DTMs (some fender rubbing) etc., for example. This will greatly improve the PS2 gaming experience compared to what we have been used to seeing. No?

I beg to differ...i have had several tests of the crash physics. Had a massive crash in the NASCAR section, took about 6 cars with me, turn 2 at indy, the wall did most damage but a head on collision with another car punted me out of the race, couldnt continue. In the british GT, i deliberatly went off round the back section, slammed the front in, wheel came off etc nothing left of the front, everything went red and couldnt continue. Trashed my DTM car:lol: On a fast section slammed the brakes and got rear ended, then hit the accelerator went flying into a concrete wall...no more merc.

I myself like this damage system..cars become to damaged to drive and it forces you out, its great, cant wait to see what happens in the F1 cars.
