Well, I only bought it last Saturday, so I wouldn't really call it "perseverance", yet :D ;)

But I bought it for two reasons:
1) To see if it really was more fun (and it is)
2) To improve my times (not much luck on this one, yet)

But it will happen. Eventually. I hope.

Why did you give up? Did you have a DFP, too?

Hey thx, my splits are nowhere near where they would be with the ds2, but honestly I dont care about that atm, I'm learning the wheel 100% and having a blast doing it. And if I get demoted...meh, I know I'm D1 material now so its all good :sly:

Even though i submitted my time to flat-out already, i am tempted to have another crack with ur extreme setup. yeah, i will have another go, just to see if i can get that 51 T2 time, is it ok if u ignore my first submission flat-out in case i beat my time?

This is no written rule, but when someone submits before the week-end, I usually accept a second submission on the monday or tuesday.
The only thing I'm asking is that it doesn't become a habit : I don't want everybody to submit twice per week.

Don't particuarly like this combo, 1st time on this track and this car understeers WAY to much compared to the cars i drive in GT Legends (PC sim ive been playing the last 1 - 2 weeks)

Had a few laps in between the cricket add breaks, (about 10mins worth of actual play) and managed

Lost .2 in last sector compared to last lap, though my last lap had a blinding last sector. Another .2 will get my goal, after that will have to set a new one :lol: Only played 70mins on this combo so not sure of how much more time i can find.

Its good to know i can still play half decent after so much time away from GT4.

Well my wheel isn't a DFP for starters, it is logitech but it's a Rally Vibration Feedback Wheel. Driving with it is certainly more fun than with the DS2 but I truly suck with it so I'm not gonna bother for a while, maybe when GT5 comes out I'll convert myself
 
This is for Jerome,Matteo and Colby.

I have been using wheels since I started on here, more or less.
Started with the DS2 for the first week, then got a Driving Force, now using the Driving Force Pro!

I found the transition from DS2-DF fairly easy( as it's very similar to the PC wheel I also use), but the transition from DF-DFP took me at least 4-5 weeks to get up to speed.

Reason being the 900 degree lock to lock, as opposed to the DF @ 190 degrees lock to lock and the DS2 3/4 inch lock to lock.

However I have found that I am now more refined, smoother, more accurate and much more consistant with the DFP than I could ever hope to be with either the DS2 or the DF wheel.

Stick with it, it takes some getting used to, but is well worth it!

On the Bad side of the DFP is when we do rally combo's! all that countersteering and lock to lock action just is impossible.

The obvious thing to do is to switch back to the DS2, however I am now completely USELESS with it now. I tried last weeks combo with it(just for a laugh and for only 5 laps or so), and SUCKED the big one!
However you can switch the DFP to 190 degree mode by pressing R1(the right paddle),R3 and select together, so it's not all bad.
You can also vary the strength of the forces by pressing L1,R3 and select. One flash is 50%, 2 is 100%!

Vibro wheels ain't that much cop, really!
I do however have my Logitech Driving Force wheel sitting in a cupboard, fully working and only used for about 2 months, complete and boxed!
It is 190 degree, but is proper force feedback, not vibro!

When i switched from DS2 - DFP, i didnt touch the DS2 for about 3 weeks. Not even to test or to try. It should only take 1 - 2 weeks to get decent with DFP. Though even now my skills are still improving with the DFP, the skills that take the longest are countersteering (at least for me) and being able to catch slides very fast and effeicently. You should really stick with it for a few weeks and never ever touch the DS2 until your fast with the DFP.
 
I'm hoping to get a DFP sometime, but I'l remain a DS2'er for a while, I might buy the whole package when GT5 comes out: PS3, GT5, Racing Cockpit with DFP...that would be sweet 👍
 
Allllrighty then! I saw the mumbo jumbo about the interested settings posted by Zikwik, I knew I needed to go back to the drawing board a little more. I had already been running a slightly softer version of Holl's settings, but was satisfied with them... But, tonight, I started off with stock, cut the spring rates in half, dropped the dampers and sways down to two, and kept messing with it throughout the night.

I've been sick for a couple weeks now, and took a 3 hour nap from 6-9pm... So, at 2am, I wasn't tired in the least... I spent 3-6am racing pretty much... YIKES! Gotta be at work at 11... Anywho, never really went with Zikwik's settings, just sorted softed out my own.

Came up with:

I only sometimes used the understeer ASM, set to 1, and decided to turn it back on in the hopes of getting that super fast lap that I knew I was capable of, sooner. I was working on getting this one lap for the last two hours, I saw it back then, but I just needed to PULL IT TOGETHER! So I played until I did.

Also used LSD settings of 6/25/20... I figured that having the stiffer LSD setup will allow the TCS to not be used as much, because it comes on and cuts power. I was using 30 for the accel, but after messing with suspension settings and what not, I came up with 25 for that. Then, the downhill stairs, I was starting to get sideways when I stomped on the brakes, so the 20 decel number is there to stabilize the car a bit under unstable braking. :) I also put my BB to 4/3 to help there as well.

And then the kicker... I have NOT refreshed my chassis. I've driven at least 600 miles this race, because it just kicks sooooo much ass. If I had time, I'd play forever, lol. The car only has 415 or so miles on it because I hadn't always saved it in between. Anywho, here's what I most likely will be submitting:

T1: 16.190(seen 16.04x twice)
T2: 52.888(probably seen some other T2s around here, but was actually trying to complete the lap instead of taking notice... lol)
T3: Just about .6 seconds faster...

Yup, I agree!

I didn't touch the DS2 at all either, until recently that is, and found I was crap with it.
And yes countersteering is really hard to get right. For the longest time I was frustrated by not being able to get it right, then I realised that I was just not turning the wheel enough. I was trying to be subtle, too subtle.
Got it down better now, the last visit to Deep Forest was when I found myself getting it right, regularly....it's taken me that long to get to grips with it!

Ah, probably gonna submit later tonite, gonna give it a little go later on tonite, but i'm not hopefull.

Think I have reached my limit, both on the track, and in my patience.

Might spend the evening playing the ever beautiful Far Cry, burnout 3, or maybe even GTR, not sure.
If I do that, then I'll hold off submitting till Tuesday, and give this a run on monday.

But for today I'm done chasing that ever-elusive ghost!

I think I'll only improve my current time if I run with no TCS. I tried it last night and it's much faster, specially at the back straight. The problem are the low speed corners like the one right after the back straight and the last corner. It's really hard to prevent wheel spin on those. I was doing them in 3rd gear because of that and it helped a little, but I still couldn't improve my time.
 
Well, as for the DFPl vs DS2 I'm stickin with the wheel!
I went out and purchased a DFP a day before GT4 was released, I played a lil GT3 and got somwhat used to the DFP, and the next day started GT4 With the DFP and only the DFP so I feel like i cant even play GT4 with the regular controler, I could definatly be faster, but hell its way more fun with the wheel :)

OH and I got some splits, first real session this week so im way behind where i would like to be...
T-1 16.8 :( yuck!
T-2 54.406 still yuck...:lol:

Anyway, you are absolutely right. Despite the fact that I am slower than I was with the DS2 (for the moment), I can already see that my lines are better and that I can take the same lines more consistantly. Trailbraking is a hell of a lot easier, too. I guess I can say I only now understand the real meaning of trailbraking, as I don't think I have ever done it so easily with the DS2. So, I already have the lines and the curve entrance-exit quite figured out, all I am missing is the speed. I am sure that will come, with time and practice.

The first race I tried to do, yesterday, while I was playing with it for the first time with GT4, was WRS 39, with the S2000 @ Deep Forest.

N3 tires on a twisty track with a hard to countersteer wheel is not the best place to start. I did about 20 laps, only to come within 6 seconds of the time I submitted with the DS2.

Anyway, all this to say that: yes, countersteering will definitely take some getting used to. I am sort of afraid to jerk the wheel that fast and often :indiff:
I mean, I know it's solid and it's designed for that, but when I hear the gearing inside it making a lot of noise due to how fast I am turning it, I am afraid I will end up tearing something up. Is that normal? How do you guys do it? Is it something you just have to get used to?

Also, for the settings in the Options menu, I am assuming you set "Active Steering" to Off, "Driving Force Pro power assist" to Off, and "Driving Force Pro feedback strength" to Strong, to have the maximum realism, correct?

Actually, Wiz,

I have the active steering set to - off
The power-assist set to - on ( it helps when countersteering as it lowers the resistance when you want to steer quickly)
And depending on the track, I have the strength set to either weak for city/twisty tracks or strong for race tracks where the need to 'feel' the track is greater.
Also as previously stated you can adjust the feedback strength 'at' the wheel, which gives us 4 different feedback strength options!

And yes my wheel is quite often 'screaming' as I switch from steering to countersteering and back again. You do get used to it, honest!

Turning active steering to on does reduce this, but IMO makes the steering in-precise as the game is helping you steer( NOT GOOD! )
I tried it last night, and found my car drifting about down the straights as the game tried to make the car take a different line to what I wanted!

Yes, I see. For the first few laps I had both the Active Steering and the Power Assist on, and the FF set to mild (without knowing it, as these seem to be the Options set in the uber-save). I turned immediately both of them off (because I didn't want the game "turning the wheel for me") and set FF to Strong, as I was used to the humongous FF LfS gives you, and I like it that way.

I don't know if I want to turn the Power Assist on, though, as that would most likely change the rates at which the wheel (and the wheels) turn. I like my steering to be linear, so it is more consistant and predictable. If the steering changes with the amount of input given and with the wheel rotational speed, it will just confuse the heck out of me and be harder to learn.

And about the gears screaming - yes, that's exactly what I meant. But if you are telling me that it is normal and that they won't just tear by doing that, then I think I will get over it and quit treating the wheel like it's made out of glass :D

Anyway, I think we might get out of topic with this DFP discussion and Cyril might get mad at us (;)), so, how about we take it into the new WRS Pit Stop thread? If you'd like to carry on this conversation, that is.

EDIT: And by 4 different feedback strength options I suppose you mean that you can have 50% or 100% of Mild and 50% or 100% of Strong, correct? Therefore, if you want the maximum force feedback, it'll have to be set to Strong in the Options and to 100% using the buttons on the wheel itself, correct?

Well, I found it, and decided I had to go get it, so I spent the next two hours making sure I went to sleep with it under my belt... Lol, I left a little bit around the last turn, but it was only a little bit... Maybe a tenth or so. And then there's probably a couple places where I could go a lil faster, but yeah, I don't know if I'll go chasing them. That's what a crazy 3AM to 6AM stint gets you... Hehehe, peace!

Had a few more hours and finally gave up and tried TCS/Understeer 1. Trimmed a have a second and broke a second barrier.

Ive had a few more goes. Starting to fall together now, lines and braking points etc. 270km on the clock and ive seen a 15.7 and also a 52.1 (not on the same lap), Should be able to put down a 51.xxx @ T2 and then be hopefully deep within a certin second barrier.

Just got done with a new session. 👍
Finished with a new best lap (clean best lap).
Still didn't manage an overall fastest lap but that's ok.
I'm satisfied (more or less).

im getting seriously wierd downshifts with this car, no engine braking at times it feels

still my 1st session, but ill see if i stick it out
 
Had a go with my DFP even though the right paddle shifter at times was playing up (after 30 mins i realised if i pressed it really hard and quickly it usually wouldnt upshift twice).

i didnt beat my DS2 time but i once had a T2 of 51.245 only to ruin the next corner:grumpy:

I'll try again with the ds2 maybe tomorrow night.
 
Hehehe, I'mma go hook up the DFP and give you my fastest lap, dirty or not, after an hour, just for fun... It'll be my first time driving with the DFP other than a quick 5 minute stint maybe 5 months ago or so... w00t! Wish me luck! :-D
