FUN FACT #2: The name GT-40 comes from the height of the car, 40 ". The new GT's designation would be GT-44, in keeping with this scheme (44" high).

D'oh, I've been calling it the GT42 :dunce: Don't know where I got that figure.
'GT' is to generic a name for it. If someone says "Hey, whaddya think of that new GT?" what do you think of?
Hundai Elantra GT? Gran Turismo 4?
Plus, I hear the only reason the new thing isn't called a GT40 (or 44) is that Lola (the GT40s develper) owns the rights to the name and Ford wouldn't pay them to use it.

IMHO, I find the GT's look more appealing than the GT40. The GT40s didn't look that nice to me. To me, they looked Ford had tried to breed a muscle car and a super car.

I like GT way more.

Ford just ripped off the old design! What differences are you basing this off?

You've got to hate that 'federal' rear bumper on the new Ford GT - just spoils it for me

FUN FACT: Ford also made an open version of the GT-40

um..yah, No. On discovery channel they mentioned that the GT40 was named the GT40 not becuz it's 40'' tall, but becuase the previous test cars and Le Mans cars lost the races/competitions 40 times or something like that. The GT40 was supposed to be the "racebreaker". The thingy on the Discovery said it was coincidence that it was 40'' tall, which is entirely up for speculation because g-forces and tight corners and abusive driving can permanantly damage/change springs, thus altering height. Also why theres a 1/4'' leeway on NASCAR's before and after a race. Also why rednecks dont jump on the roof of their cars in victory lane anymore too.
The GT40 went on to win 7 consecutive years, until Porsche got pissed off and PWNED everyone. They later discontinued it.

Edit: My dad had a 1976 (i think) Datsun 360Z. He totalled it on a windy road in BC going 140. My uncles/his brothers thought he was dead because the wreckage was so horrible. He walked away with a sore wrist because a beer-bottle broke and cut it. He's a crazy redneck in case u havent read my signature. Isnt that right Jeff?

Well, Autoweek said it was the height, so it could be either. With old cars like that, it's anyone's guess.
There was no such thing as a 360Z. It was probably a 260Z. The 240Z is a superior car, though :D

"Rednecks" don't jump on their cars anymore because of aerodynamic templates. If the templates don't fit before and after a race, the team gets penalized for cheating. Looks like you didn't do all of your homework before posting...

And on a lighter note, I've never heard of the "40 race-breaker" logic behind the GT40's name...Pretty interesting, but I still think it was called the GT40 because of the height...seems more logical. But that's just my thoughts (and what kind of person would believe my thoughts?)
