Something I'd like to know is whether or not the damage a vehicle sustains in GT5 is persistent.

Also, poll... should it be persistent? I think it should be. From the sounds of it, the effect of damage on performance isn't terribly severe... so as long as there's a moderately cheap way of repairing the damage, it'd be awesome.

Do you mean damage that will carry over after a race? and you'd have to pay to repair it or race with it the next time over?

Yeh I'm all for that.

I think so. Being wary of what you are doing to your car is another step to realism. If repairs are free, you are not really bothered about what happens to your car in the race.
Even though it would be more difficult, I think it would be good.

Going by what seems to be the consensus interpretation, I don't see a point to it. If GT started simulating more aspects of racing, like a race team and their financial management, sure. GT right now doesn't go deep enough into racing as opposed to driving, so it seems like a gimmick to me.

I don't understand what persistent damage means.

It means that after the race, the damage your car sustained remains until you get it fixed.

In most games, the damage just magically goes away after the race, sometimes with a percentage of your earnings for the race deducted.

Be pointless, was annoying more than a good thing in Forza paying for damage after, especially when it was because the stupid AI rammed me, so the train AI in GT would be even more irritating

Yeah it will make more motivation to race as clean as possible, however if they are going to charge for repair(like Forza) then might want to give us a few thousand more credits per race, i remember in Forza 1 it took forever to get a new car because you race AI and they race dirty then you spend half your scratch patching up.

in the first part of playing gt5 this would make sence and the game even harder to go on...but when you have come to a certain point you usually have a lot of money...this has always been at the other GT titles too...so from that point on it just would be annoying to go to the repair shop and spend for example 500 of you 3 billion credits...you understand?
but on the other hand it could be interesting to start a race with partial damaged cars... :-)

there should be cash bonus for not damaging car in race like in forza. So if you beat your car you get less money;pay for repairs. And yes, i do not need a repair car button in game to satisfy my nursing needs.

I voted 'no' I hate damage in general. Sega GT had damage that would automatically deduct your winnings to repair your car. It was infuriating.

However, if they added that on as an option I wouldn't mind. It would give the difficulty other players seem to want. But I like just racing cars, and buying cars. It's what worked the first time around and it's what I hope will work the second time around.

I get a feeling that damage wont be persistent though.

I didn't even think about that. It'd be kinda cool being able to take your beaten-up cars online, for fun.

It would be really nice if you could just fix the mechanical parts on the car, beef it up but leave the body looking all beat up and take it to an online race. It'll be like my rusted out AE86 or riced out EG Hatch I made on Forza 2 using the Livery feature. The cars looked like crap but the handling of the 86 and speed of the Hatch really caught a few of my friends by surprise.

I vote no because:

Look at this way, the GT game what i want is GT4 with GT5P graphics, plus damage, plus weather-day-night cycle(im pretty sure thats what will we get)

If damage persistence gona be a new instance after finish the race that i dont want, i want the same carrer mode of the previous GTs, old school.

Sorry my english.

No, terrible idea. It will get annoying very fast, especially if you don't have a lot of money. You could be driving cleanly and an idiot AI driver bumps you from behind and sends you off the race track and into the wall and yet you'll continue to suffer from that.

It's along the same lines of requiring you to purchase gasoline regularly. No thanks.

Yesss.

If done right, it'll be cool to pay to fix your car after a championship. But I'm not planning on crashing anytime soon :)

I would rather that damage repair is optional in your garage. only as long as it doesn't cost a rediculous amount or have huge effects on performance.

No, deduct the repair from your earnings from at the end of the race.
The poll needed more options.

I voted yes because it will increase the feeling of ownership.

If you tear up a car in a race and it is still tore up after the race it feels like its the same car. Totally different story if its repaired automatically.

Drivers become connected with cars they race even giving them names. Maybe someday GT5 will make you feel that close with your virtual car.

As for how it should be implemented the amount of damage you inflict on your car should of course reflect how much the car is worth. Busting off the door on a civic should not cost the same as busting off a door on a Ferrari. If you do not have enough to pay for the damages then you pay 10% percent of your total credits.

No, deduct the repair from your earnings from at the end of the race.

I don't know about Automatic deductions, let's say i scramble a car, but, i have another in the garage but say not enough credits to lose at the moment, so i leave my scuffed one at home till im comfortable paying the damage.

I dislike the idea of auto repair...

I think some of the early races should be damage-free, like how there was no tyre wear in early races on GT3-4. This would mean, by the time you are able to damage cars, at least you have others in your garage to use. It would also give new players a chance to get to grips with the game, without worrying about wrecking their first car.

Would cars be denied from entering a race if they were too damaged? You get that in NFS Prostreet, if your car is damaged, you have to repair it before you start a new race day. If so, then it should be impossible to damage your car if you only have 1 car, because you could get in a situation where you have no money, and just a wrecked car in your garage that can't be raced. (or have a way to earn cash by doing driving challenges/missions)

If it was a small cost, then yeah, why not.
There should be an option to turn it off, so the car is automaticaly repaired after race for people who don't want it.

If the AI is good enough then it wont be a problem, hell NFS pro street has persistant damage and I get through races without a scratch. So yes,get persistant damage, and get good AI

In principle, I like this idea, but I'm not sure how well it would work in practice. It certainly needs significant thought.

Car damage should be persistent ONLY for GT Mode. For Arcade mode, there should be no persistent damage and you should always start a race with a new version of a car. A lot of people will want to smash up cars just for the fun of it. What should happen when a car is written off (should premium insurance coverage pay / buy new car / how does this affect cars available in Arcade mode)?

Car sales / trading / auctioning would need to be given some serious thought as cars could be sold / traded / auctioned in a damaged state. GT PSP integration would presumably be just one way, from the PSP to the next gen console (PS3, PS4, etc).

I think GT is too hard for most people. The game really needs 2 skill levels that could merge in with Standard / Professional (phyiscs)... In Professional (normal) mode, I'd be game for pretty much any realistic option that anyone mentions. In Standard (easy) mode... Damage shouldn't be persistent. Also, gamers need to be able to resell a car back to the game for something much nearer the original purchase price (but NOT to other gamers, auctions, etc). This would make the game more appealing to kids and car novices who are learning about cars with the game. I think this sort of easy mode is a better solution than the 1 button driving that's being pushed by Turn 10.
