GT5 destroyed your laser? Seriously man, we know the game isn't perfect but trying to convince us it destroyed your laser.

Odds on some complaining that GT5 broke their TV soon?

I'm not trying to convince anyone, but just saying ... maybe the game is just too big a handful for the PS I have. Don't be so negative :)

I'm not an expert, that's why I'm asking others ... of course there should have been a question-mark in the title, never wanted to convince anyone about anything.

It'll give you the option of installing commonly used and large files to the hard drive when you first run it.

Niky,

Is there a way to tell whether I've done this or not? Cuz I really don't remember that option when installing?

Also, in defense of the peole saying it is "wearing out their laser" It could be a couple of thngs....the laser can be dirty (it does get dirty) and also the platter can get wonky. All disks are not made perfectly balanced.. And after years of playing, especially if you had an especially wonky disk, it can unbalance the platter rotation mechanism. It doesn't have to be a lot, even very slightly...but then if you put another wonky disk in there that is wonky in a different direction it can cause even more problems.

In short....before you go out and buy a new playstation, try insterting your disk in different orientations....like a clock. Start at 12, if you have problems move to 1, then 2 etc. Eventually you may find an orientation that stops your problem. High end cd players have very beefed up platter systems just for this reason....and it's not a platter system sony is using I assure you.

The laser I have now is 1 month old, the first one was replaced after 4 years. It shouldn't be done now already.

Lead-free solder... meh... what are you going to do? That's life. First we can't have water pipes that last forever, then we can't have paint that lasts forever... then we can't even have electronics, which no one is going to lick or drink from...
Yeah... it's a life. I miss old consoles, PSX and before, they were indestructible.
But i know a few places in my city where people can replace lead-free solder for X360/PS3/most of new GPUs with a lead one. It'll be the proper reball, not "handmade" reflow.
But since those people doing that on a professional "hardware" (i forgot how the right name for it) it's cost a lot... In fact, that cost that much (about 180$) so it's almost not worth bothering, unless you really can't live without PS2 games on PS3.
180$ reball + very possible laser fail just like happened with OP, it's 65$+ more.
It's a 245$ or more, very close to the price of new slim PS3...

Agreed, sounds like an inconveniently expensive patch for a problem that won't hit you at all before the dreaded YLOD...

It asks on first run-through if you'd like to preinstall some large files. Afterwards, there's a tick-box marked in options on the "Home" Screen (not the "Life" Screen... gads, that's confusing...)

My PS3 is from 2007 60 GB FatBoy! Still going on strong. I always kept it in an open comfortably cool spot and dusted it every now and then. It's like a car, you abuse it, obviously it will die sooner. Take care of it and you can double its life span! Call me a nerd for dusting my PS3, but hey, I'm taking care of it. It was the first expensive thing I ever bought with my own hard earned cash!
