It took awhile, but we got there.
Mitsubishi GTO SR ‘96
Welcome to another episode of GT5 Driver's Insight. In this review, I will be testing the 1996 Mitsubishi GTO SR requested by werty_56-1. Looking over the specifications, I am not expecting a brilliant drive. This car sports the Naturally Aspirated 3.0 V6 coupled with Mitsubishi’s trusted 4WD system. This car having the non turbo 3.0 V6 rather than the twin turbo 3.0 V6 which is found in the VR-4 leads me to believe that this is a watered down trim level, more of a ‘base model’. Here are the specifications:
Brake horsepower: 206 bhp @ 6000 rpm (no oil change).
Torque: 255 nm @ 4500 (no oil change).
Performance Points: 390 pp.
Weight: 1610 kg.
Engine: NA 3.0 V6.
Drivetrain: Front engined 4WD, with a five speed transmission.
Price: 29,980 cr. (at 0kms).
102 kg more heavier than the Corvette I just tested, with an engine half the size and 300 bhp less?! Somethings not right here. It shows, as well:
0 – 400m: 16.149
0 – 1000m: 29.175
0 – 100km/h: 8.263
0 – 200km/h: N/A
Max Speed: 243.3km/h
Max g force: 0.67
Acceleration feels bogged down, it feels like it’s got less power than it really has. Max speed is alright, considering how much weight and power it has.
Looking at these results while I was on my way to Tokyo R246, where I will be testing the Mitsubishi’s handling, I am not expecting a record breaking time.
As I arrive I quickly get into the Mitsubishi. The Mitsubishi’s interior view is great, especially the rearview. You see everything like your driving a motorized window. Turning into the last corner heading onto the main straight, I get a… normal result. As mentioned before acceleration is not fantastic, so I don’t make a fast corner exit. I start applying the breaks to slow down for the first corner. Breaks are great! They definitely don’t show the amount of weight this car has. Turning in, I get the expected understeer. Not as much as I was expecting though. One thing that I’m not enjoying is this car’s wide gearbox. 3rd is soooooo long and just saps out most of the power and just doesn’t work. After a few laps, I get used to the understeer and figure out how to deal with it. To get good corner entries, you must turn in early. You normally clip the apex and go back to the outside. A thing I found tricky was dealing with the understeer on Tokyo’s long corners. I’d go in early, but I’d slide to the outside mid corner which isn’t a good thing to happen in a long corner. I’d deal with it by letting of the throttle for a bit. I found this was a good way to deal with it. I was driving for a little while and I realized. This car would be perfect for an average player starting out with its easy to drive nature and it’s not too high powered engine. Sadly with its nearly 30,000 cr. pricetag, it isn't cheap for a beginner, although you could always save up for it.

The final result:
Comfort: The Mitsubishi has a very nice soft suspension which is great for around town, but not so much for track duties. Thanks to this soft suspension it produces a fair bit of bodyroll.
I give it a 75/100.
Speed: Fairly underpowered considering the weight it has to carry around. Once you get up to speed it is a really nice car to drive.
65/100.
Value: Fairly overpriced for what you get. You can easily get faster cars (Imprezas, Lancers) for that price. Would be more suited to about 18,000 cr. It would make a perfect car for beginners.
58/100.
Looks: In my opinion, the GTO SR is one of the nicest looking cars for its price range. It gives a nice nineties technical vibe with its low slung body and wide rear spoiler.
65/100.
Fun Factor: This thing is very fun once you get up to speed. You may intend on doing a nice cruise but you will shortly find yourself trying to grab that last tenth of a second.
70/100.
All in all, the Mitsubishi GTO SR is a pretty good car with its great handling, but its sadly overshadowed by its heavy weight and not so stellar performance.
Would I get one if I had the money?
Possibly. It would make a good project car as it starts without the horrible understeer the VR-4 has.
Thanks a lot for reading!
