GT5 freezing?

I have been using my old (PS2 compatible) PS3 a LOT for the last few days

I was doing an international licence run and the colours were bizarre. Red trees, purple concrete etc. that partially became normal in colour as I approached it in the car.

I saved the replay and went into photo mode to capture examples. Going into photo mode caused the colours to change again – partially for the better, but still crazy

I completed the run anyway.

When I went onto the next test (TVR), on the second run the PS3 froze solid. I had to eject the disc and start again.

It did this a couple of times (requiring re-starts) and it is quite warm, so I suspected it may be due to overheating – though the PS3 is freestanding on a perforated metal grille to allow good cooling.

I transferred a couple of pics and switched it off to cool.

Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? Is it a symptom of overheating as I suspect?

Have you changed the thermal paste in your PS3 yet? I'd recommend you do that if you haven't. I changed my 60GB PS3 with the GC Extreme thermal paste and when I put my hands around my PS3 and there is definitely less heat and less fan noise. For now I don't see any reason to change the power supply since the PS3 is back to when I bought it. I would only do if GT5 freezes again.

Thermal paste? No idea what this is!

I intended to put this in the general GT5 section. Can a mod please move it if they see it? Thanks!

Thermal paste is the material that conducts heat between a processor and the heatsink. Most pastes get cruddy and don't conduct as much heat after 2-3 years. It's not that hard to do and you just remove the old thermal paste with paper towels.

Yes this sort of stuff happened to me too. I, too, have a phatty (i.e. launch) PS3. What happened to me was that I didn't get any indicators (no speedometer, no g meter, no acceleration, nothing) so I had to rely solely on the car's panels!!! Which was cool because the Murcielago has all of that on its dash (it was particularly cool that the gear indicator showed). Anyway, I sent my PS3 to $ony a few days ago. I hope they fix it well!

Ah, thanks. I'll have to go to an electronics shop to get some because I switched it on again today to see if leaving overnight would cure it...

no, it didn't

It is even showing saved replays in weird colours now.

I hope that new thermal paste will cure this, as I would hate to lose everything (AFAIK, you can't transfer data to another PS3, right?).

So, you've been playing GT5 non-stop too :D

I'll try applying new thermal paste and hope this works. Good luck with the Sony repair!

Well if the thermal paste does not help you then you can make backups of the hard drive using the backup mode in the settings menu. So even if you were to lose your PS3 you should be able to restore the data to a new PS3(minus the use of the PS2 saves because of no Backwards compatibly support in slims).

How long does it take for these color effects to show up. If this happens immediately while playing, it is likely that the GPU has been heat damaged. If this is the case, thermal paste will not help you because it is too late.

^^^ :nervous: It is there when I switch it on – not looking good in that case...

nick09 So, if I connect a USB hard drive to the PS3, can I really save my GT5 game data? And it is transferable to another PS3 so that I can carry on playing GT5 with all my achieved cars, levels, etc.? That would be cool. (Not so worried about PS2 – have got another of those. Also have a slim PS3 that's seen little use yet – but that could soon change!)

Can anyone confirm that you can save the game data and put it on another PS3 – I thought I read in another thread that this wasn't possible?

Before going and unseating fans and heatsinks to replace the thermal paste be sure to watch or look up how to do it. If not done properly you can burn up the chips in a matter of seconds. There is also the matter of static electricity if you don't properly ground yourself. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself you could ask some local computer shops to do it for you.

^^^ But if it shows crazy colours from start-up, then is not the GPU not already permanently damaged as minihulkster suggests?

And in that case I need a way to copy my GT5 game data (nearly reached level 15) from the phat to my slim.

USB hard drive connected to PS3 and then?...
Any "Transferring PS3 data for Dummies" guide about? :dunce:

Just hooked up a Western Digital HD to the USB of the PS3. It doesn't show. I had this problem with some USB sticks too, but found some that work.

Anyway, I went to the GT5 saved game data and it clearly tells me that I can't copy this (same withNFS Shift too, but GT5 P allows it).

So, where do I go from here – can I not save my GT5 stuff to another PS3? That would really suck.

When I had the PS3 on just now, on the menus, there were little star-like flashes of colour appearing over the screen – I get the feeling that it won't last much longer:scared: so any advice as how I can save my data would be really welcome.

^^^ Thanks very much for that 👍

Such a relief if I don't have to start again!

Looks like I know what my (early) Christmas present will be. (My girls wouldn't want me to re-format our slim PS3 with all their stuff on, so I'll just have to get a 320GB to save my GT5 stuff.)

Any usb device you want to connect to your PS3 MUST be FAT32 format not NTFS. If the HDD you would like to use is empty just re-format it and select FAT32 once you do it should show up on your PS3.

As for what to do to backup "protected" data I don't know what to tell you. I think a full backup of the PS3 will get it, but you still won't be able to restore those parts of the backup onto any other PS3...

As far as I understand you can make a backup using the backup utility to a Fat32 formatted external hard drive (as I have done) but you will only be able to use it with the PS3 that made the back up... fine if your save becomes corrupt, like for instance if the power died whilst saving or something.

You can also move your GT5 save from one PS3 to another using the data transfer utility.. all you need is an ethenet cable... protected data (ie GT5 save) will transfer to the 'new' machine but at the same time will be deleted from the old one.

Wait a minute. So.. what happens if your ps3 dies? How do you get the data to a new PS3? Doesnt the slim have a mechanism to transfer the entire HDD data from the phat to the slim?

My new slim is due tomorrow.

I've watched the YouTube PS3 to PS3 data swap clip – he emphasises that it has to be a ethernet cable, NOT a crossover ethernet cable.

I've got various ethernet cables knocking around, but know nothing about them. How do I know if a cable is "crossover" or not???

My slim 320GB has arrived and I am currently letting the data transfer from phat to slim via the ethernet cable.

Fingers crossed! :nervous:

If you did not back up your data before the PS3 dies, you're pretty much out of luck unless you get the PS3 repaired. The data on the drive is tied to that particular PS3 and the data cannot be accessed from another PS3 even if you pull the drive out and pop it into a new console. I'm not certain if there's a file transfer mechanism through Ethernet on the slim but you should be able to back up to an external hard drive.

So, the data transfer has finished.

My user names and the PSN details all work – though it said at first that the password was wrong and I had to re-enter it. Then it was fine 👍

Went to look at game data. GT5 trophies and game data: it synched it and all seemed to be there 👍

Final check is to actually launch the game, so I'll put the GT5 disk in the new slim.

IT WON'T ACCEPT THE DISK. Just won't pull it in. WTF????

To say I was unhappy would be a slight exageration!

I thought my options are to

1. Return it – but then I'd have to reverse the data transfer (I checked and the game data is wiped – you start from scratch on the old PS3) - and I didn't fancy that.

2. See if the PS3 could be persuaded to take the disk.

I decided to try with a less important BluRay and after about 10 attempts to feed it, it bit and pulled it in. Next test – will it eject?

Yes! Put it in and ejected a couple of times, then tried to feed the GT5 disk in. Nope, doesn't want it. :scared:

Back to the other disk - repaetedly fed it in and out about 20 times. Works OK now.

Try GT5 – yes! It goes in and everything works.

Talk about a nail-biter!:scared:

can anyone help me... GT5 is freezing at least once a day.... usually after an hour or so.....like during the race it just freezes.... it happens everyday... both patches are installed... i have the Fat 160gb ps3... but that is not the problem.. it doesn't freeze when i am playing other games... it is only when playing GT 5..... plus no scratches or anything on the disk... and my ps3 doesn't over heat either.... i used to play for 8 -9 hours straight.... it didn't get warm... not even a little.....i don't know what is wrong with this game..... it is really frustrating.. when your almost about to cross the finish line and it freezes.... and than i have to manually shut my ps3 off..... nothing works when its frozen... not even the controller.... i am using Custom music.. can that be causing this issue?

So are... all the... periods... you... freezing?

Sorry, dude. Had to. :p

First off, if you'd be so kind, go through and try to clean that up a bit. I see plenty of places where you could use a comma in place of the "..." which would make it much easier to read and capital letters wouldn't hurt, either. :)

Next, I'd strongly consider cleaning the dust out of your PS3. If it used to run alright and nothing has changed (changed as in you've moved it to an enclosed space, etc.) it could be it's not getting enough air to keep it cool that is causing the lockups.

oh sorry about all the......lol. I'll bare that in mind. No it is at the same place. This is driving me nuts. Why? Why? Why? after all the wait, now these freezing issues. :(
