GT5 HDD install?

I've got a 5400rpm 250GB drive in my slim that was in my fat with approx 100GB free, it is better having a big drive for videos, pictures and music. It's a bit of a pain getting a replacement PS3 or putting in a new drive as it takes ages and windows can only format a partition on an external HDD upto 30GB so doing a back up can be a problem. Also not all game saves can be copied or backed up!

It's a shame you can't put many games on the HDD so you can load them straight from the XMB, I'd be very tempted to buy GT5 as digital download if they offer it but then I also want a special edition if they do that too...I think getting both might be a bit excessive!

@sems4arsenal: You should buy a 5400 rpm hd though.
The 7200 rpm ones produce more heat, that COULD lead to problems

What you said is true, however, the heat a hard drive makes is nothing compared to other components. Are there any studies that show 7200 drives are less reliable? 7200 drives cost more but the faster access times are usually worth it.

People need to be aware that a faster 7200 drive in your PS3 uses more power and generates more heat than the stock HDD.

I don't know if this could cause trouble for your console over time. But it should be at least noted.

It's perfectly safe.

IMO it depends on where you put your PS3 i mean if you put it in a well ventillated room with a small fan to provide clean air (not slipstream:grumpy:)
:)
or if you stuff it in a small compartment under your Tv like yours truely:sly:
than it might cause it to over heat

If you put it on a small compartment with poor ventilation, it will over heat no matter what.

well it is not that poorly ventillated but my mighty PS3 is still running

What ps3 do you have (slim, fat etc)? Because the Cell processor in the slim is much smaller than in the fat one. The smaller the processor, the less chances your ps3 has to overheat. Also note that the ps3 has a very good and reliable cooling system unlike the XBOX(RROD). Thats why none is complaining about overheat problems. However i am gonna tell you a story....

8/1/2010 FF13 import version delivered!!!!!!!
14/1/2010 After saving the game in FF13 i immediately push the PS button to check my trophies
2 seconds later... The ps3 freezes
30 seconds later I turn it off
I turn it on immediately and i hear a strange noise. It was the fan trying to cool down the system... I turn the system off and i let it take a rest
40 minutes later everything works fine

It's completely impractical. Sony or MS for that matter, wouldn't allow someone to develop and produce a game which encourages the end user to use up massive chunks of their hard drive. The end result would be that people think they haven't got much space on their HDD, so they wouldn't buy as many games.

The blu-ray reads at pretty good speeds tbh, it's more a case of ease of use for the consumer to not throw the disc in and out, than actual minor performance margins.

In the future, when hard drives are bigger, well, really, when SSD's are common place, affordable and ammounting to several TBs, all e-media will be digital. Won't be any time soon though, we still sell about 5:1 in favour of hard copy.

I have the big old one but to be honest hearing that the game data utility itself can't be saved on the HDD then i think i'll have to buy a new PS3 just for GT5 I watch blue ray movies and delete them once I finish them so the HDD isn't what I want:grumpy:
