I never played it but, according to the kid, if a host disconnects in MW2 there is a brief lag while the host is switched over to another player.

Makes perfect sense and shouldn't be too hard to pull of. Maybe someone else can confirm/deny this feature?

Well, if switching over to other players and brief lag happens in a sim game it's almost saying the game is over since no one is driving the cars (on damage fully on), cause if you crash there's gonna be nothing to drive :lol:. Unless they manage to pause everyone in a race it wouldn't be a problem.

If Gran Turismo can match Dirt 2's online capability I will be ecstatic!

I'm thinking of getting DIRT 2 but waiting for the price to drop. What makes the online part of it good?

it has a voting feature, private lobby, and achievements for online wins. I love the online.

It also supports really good voice chat, allows the host to start the race when he's ready and allows the host to make changes to the events as you go along. Allows for private custom events open to invitation only and/or a combination of friends and an adjustable amount of public entry should you chose to do so. Also allows teams to race other teams. Also has been said that the "voting" aspect allows the host to boot someone out of the room should they be deemed a detriment to good clean racing :)

@ H20HYBRID_GT:

I've not played any racing games with online voice chat so hopefully swearing won't be a problem in GT5. The donkey profanity is from South Park The Movie and was meant to be an amusing example...I've yet to hear it online myself! I have heard more common swearing playing MW2 and KZ2 online though, not necessarily abusive to anyone in the game but certainly not what you would want a child to hear. LittleBigPlanet only has text chat for this reason so I am concerned voice chat could be restricted in GT5.

Hopefully it won't be an issue and there is an effective abuse reporting system in place to keep things clean. GT5 online is where most people will eventually end up spending most of their time so it needs to be done right.
Yup, I don't think that it'll be a problem, only time I really had gripes with (text) chat was on GTR2 on PC, really immature.:(

Oh and I really hope GT5 will have a bit more options than Dirt2. Dirt2 isn't bad, just pretty basic IMO.

I'm sure they'll have a grief reporting system so even if there was a problem it should be controlled. I really want voice chat, text chat is tedious on a Ds let alone a wheel!

I think the fact that Kaz has said GT5 online is the top feature we should expect something special. I'm looking forward to finding out what it'll be like

I just dont hope that the choppy movement from GT5P online will be in the final version.

And i dont hope people can use the handbrake to do hard corners like some people do atm.

Another issue that affects play is the quality of the netcode. Unfortunately for us this is an area where PD have little track record so we'll just have to hope they get it right and, if not, they patch regularly as they work to improve it.

Oh yes, the netcode. Very important. Judging from Prologue, it's not up to par with other games yet. So let's hope they have worked hard on improving it.

Just a few options I would like.

I would be nice if it could save league progress,such as the league table,everyone's lap times,replays of each race (editor please Kaz),replay of the fastest laps.

Another option regarding league's would be practice sessions.Each player could be limited to three one hour sessions in the build-up.These sessions would be available for 6 days or until qualification and race day.It would save your 5 fastest laps per session for viewing by others, and could be put on youtube as a collection.It would edit each lap into a vid split by a screen with the lap time.

I was thinking that a parc fermé system could be imposed,so once you enter a league and have chosen a car that fits the rules,you lose this car from your garage.and you get it back once the league is over or you quit the league.
This would be used for preventing people practicing offline.On it's own it would be pointless,but maybe you could have a league contract,if you sign for my ideal GT5 league you would allow your game to block you from racing the same car outside of the league.Again it would be just a option and wouldn't be mandatory for leagues.

With damage being iincluded,it would be cool if limitations on the number of gearboxs and enginges per season like in F1.I suppose you could even charge credits if you wanted.

I think it will be a feature,but a mandatory pit stop option,i'd like to set certain number of laps before fuel can be added,i'd be surprised if that's not in though.

I do have other ideas but it would drag on a bit :)

I think saving league progress would be an excellent addition. There aren’t many people who have the time to complete multiple races in one session so the host could set the parameters and race start days/times after agreeing it with the other league members, this forum would be an ideal place for arranging all the details. Also if you couldn’t make it for the start of a league race or your internet connection fails then you get a DNF but continue in the league at the next round rather than abandoning the whole league.

What other ideas have you got?

hmm i think completly online idea of campain would be cool idea ! And in race where there will be only few players to race with then rest will be AI. :)

I am also a network engineer. The bandwidth and processing is available on both ends, so with a properly coded connection the two should be nearly indistinguishable, for the most part. Except obviously in the case of a host with an unstable connection, clearly more likely to fail than a Sony hosted server farm sitting on a backbone.

My guess here is that both will be available, based on KY's general insistence of perfection.

Once that is working, then we can move on to private racing on custom tracks. :)

What ever other ideas i'd thought of are gone,i'll blame beer and a late night for that :)

I'll be surprised if the entire GT mode isn't available online.It could be a car club option,or just give a option to race offline/online from the event section

From memory PD have set up a smaller studio close by,and it's dedicated towards the online portion.
I just get a feeling online will be as huge as offline in this.

So what can people make out of the icons in that GUI photo?

Event Settings:

Lock = Unknown
Chequered Flag = Number of laps
Flag = Racing Flags? (Photo shows None)
Unknown = Unknown
Unknown = Unknown
Person? = Number of people connected to server? Maybe 1 spectator / server?
Helmet = Number of racers?

Regulations:

Unknown = Unknown (Perhaps this is a car choice?)
Large Circle Small Circle = Drivetrain (Photo shows FR)
Unknown = Unknown
PP = Max Point Value of car
PS = Max Power
Weight = Min Weight
Steering Wheel = Professional or Standard?
Tyre = Tyres

So it looks like we have screen shots of the online lobby!

I agree with the above although the first icon in regulations could be relating to car damage

We also have:

Time to race start
Friends list (?)
Settings
Unknown
Weather
Date
Time
Download percentage (?)

Replay mode

Driver list with status

Course information (with plenty of space for multiple tracks?)

Garage
Driving options
Quick tune

Chat (text and voice)

Free run
Race

View (page layout?)

Thanks to Carbonfibre for the photo and to Dbarrade for the event settings and regulations.

This is really good news and is getting a lot of people excited including myself. It's looking like KY was telling the truth when he said GT5 online was going to be a top feature.

Has anyone got any ideas what the unknows and other icons might be?

This is a pretty big revelation!

I'm not convinced the first icon in regulations is car damage as I'm not convinced that damage will be supported in online races. It would surely take up a huge amount of bandwidth to show detailed damage on 16 cars that isn't predrawn but is calculated realistically. It may not be possible to guarantee this for people with a poor internet connection.

Hopefully we'll get more photos and videos of this from the next regional finals :)

Lock icon = password

Helmet might be a force cockpit view option - let's hope so :)
The icon before that is number of players

Why do you want a force cockpit view? Forza has that and i've never seen that implicated. People should chose their own veiws.

for people who want realism and so everyone in the same race has the same settings

hopefully one of those icons means no driving aids as well

So this online lobby looks pretty special HOWEVER does this look like a real-time in-game lobby? For instance any new players joining the lobby can watch the race in real-time and look at timings per sector or does this show just pre-race lobby options?

People who want realism can choose cockpit if they want too but enforcing the same veiw on someone else is pointless.

You'll find a lot of racing leagues and games like iRacing only have cockpit view. So everyone is on equal footing

I use bumper cam because I find having 2 wheels in front off my eyes is not realistic.:)

By the way, what could that AppleWorks like icon be for?

Then don't join that room. :sly:

Also, the "Regulations" icon on top looks to have a gauge in it. Can probably set for fuel consumption, etc.

It seems the info on the top right is the real life date and time etc
Then the grey shaded icons on the left side, password/lock, laps, flags?
weather(kinda looks like a sun in there), chat allowed, number of spectators and racers I think

Maybe the one next to the helmet is the number of members in the room and the helmet is the number of racers with the remaining members being spectators. The other flag next to the chequered flag being qualifying?

Flag rules IMO, like yellow, green and black flags etc

it says "none" under the flag image
