As we all know, most people on GT5 are not very clean drivers, or are just unsure of the proper guidelines on overtaking. Everyone should watch this video (I know it isn't GT5 but the message is the same):

I think the number one gripe for me online is that other drivers try to pass at all costs. This means passing on a corner that would otherwise knock the lead car out of the way or other drivers trying to drive neck and neck on an extremely narrow part of the track (Think Rome Circuit's Straight that eventually becomes quite narrow). I hate when drivers do this. I try to pass only when/where appropriate and don't care if I don't win but I love a tight race. Sometimes, coming second but putting heaps of pressure on the lead car can be a very satisfying race.

I wrote something similar some months ago, so I obviously agree.

That Iracing video series is great, I agree, everyone should watch it as well..

this thread wins

i know it's possible, but most people can't pass clean at the foxhole but almost everyone tries.

The first curve at Suzuka is also tough to survive with all the optimistic overtakes it sees.

Good video, Skier

People love to hide behind the internet and they do and say thing here that they would never do in real life. Gt5 online is a spill over from that. Its impossible to avoid just by hopping into lobbys. I just try to run with my friends and there friends. Also the regulars i see with rooms all the time. Where respect is given.

I hate when someone spins another guy, then that guy plows thru me to try and get retaliation on the original culprit. Pointless and un-cool.

I really wish PD would consider a License Test system for online racing. So atleast people have to practice using proper racing techniques before being allowed into certain lobbies. The more tests they do, the more challenging and serious races they are allowed to join. Sure, they may not continue driving clean, but it doesn't hurt to try.

That video, in my opinion, makes racing sound veery strict....but racing was always strict, right?

It's because of drivers wrecking each other and having different definitions of who is entitled to what position on a turn that this video is needed. GT5 (and Forza) online racers are absymal.

Funny you'd mention this as just an hour ago I performed maybe the most spectacular pass I've done in a long time, approaching foxhole going round the outside of my competitor. It was beautiful.

I don't like how in the iRacing video they say you should surrender the corner if someone is alongside you, because I don't quite understand what that means. Surely you're not supposed to just brake and give up the place completely? :odd:

http://en.lfsmanual.net/wiki/Rules_of_Clean_Racing this is what I've raced by all these years. I think it's more clear in explaining that you only need to leave sufficient room on the inside if someone is alongside you at corner entry. I always try to contest the overtaker from the outside (unless it's a really difficult or narrow corner).

As long as you don't hit anyone/anything, it's all good! 👍

I've seen this video before, it's a great explanation for new online racers. I enjoy hanging out at the back for at least the first lap awaiting inevitable mistakes or people getting aggressive with each other.
I do like racing with friends, but the real thrill for me comes from racing strangers.

There's a difference between passing in a video game and passing in real life.

You notice in real life that you are about to scrape someone or you feel that you are just not going to make the turn if you keep the speed up. It's pretty easy to notice when driving.

In a video game it's really hard to notice when you are pushing it a little much. It's also hard to turn around and look out the window. Mirrors are good and all, but there's something to be said for simply turning your head.

I can drive in real life quite well. I admittedly suck in the game. It feels too different to me. I can feel the tires giving way when I actually drive, I feel the G force pushing to what I know the car can do. It's hard to translate that into the game. It's not PD's fault, they did great with this game in my opinion, it's just not going to ever measure up to plain old driving though.

I'm quite bad about jumping curves. the AI lets me know what it thinks of that all the time by curving into me anyway. They don't back off like this video wants people to do. That's ok, I don't back off either. I think I might among friends, but strangers? I'll have a hard time with that especially if they are asses to begin with.

It's perspective to me.

@Skier You people would only bitch whine, and moan until people told them how to pass the test and then do the same things they do in the reg game. That's kids for you. They don't learn from things, they find a way around it.

Nurburgring is the worst magnet for dirty/careless racers. the first corner is ALWAYS a mess... the next part is another nightmare (just after the jump before the high speed corner) people always try to pass, and end up crashing...HARD... taking out half the pack. This gets very frustrating if you are starting from the back of the pack.

I don't know the rules of racing as much as others may but have always believed that if the person you are trying to overtake has the racing line leading in to the corner, or the nose of their car is ahead of your A pillar (in both occasions I mean once you hit the braking point) you should yield. Unless you have been behind them for some time and have had time to see how effectively they brake (or not) and know you will pass cleanly, you should be the one to yield which makes it pretty clean way of doing it. If you have the right of way due to the previous, then the one being overtaken should yield which is is where a lot goes wrong.

Admittedly, I didn't watch the video but got the gist of it from the thread.

Edit: Sometimes someone may brake too late but as long as it isn't a continuous thing it doesn't mean they are trying to ruin your race, only that they made a mistake.

I used to race online with the "Pilsbeerbude" on GTLegends from SIMBIN.

they had one great rule...

IF YOU CAUSE SOMEONE TO SPIN-OUT , YOU WAIT AND LET HIM PASS.

those where great racing days ! ( although i have to admit that if you look hard , good races can be found )

Grtz !

this idea just came to mind , cars start with 100% health and points are deducted if you go over the finish line with less... also the rear bumper has less or no effect on this... just thinking...

Ill always do that. Almost always anyway...

One thing about the blocking, I'll generally have one direction change, and leave it at that. Its normally enough for the other guy to back out of the throttle enough that will mean he has alot of work to do inthe breaking zone and on the outside of the corner.

One VERY big things clean room tend to not have is the return on track policy.

God Please, if you're going out by a mistake, dont come back on the track like you're still in lead and have all the right. Once you're out of the track, you lost all priority basicaly, you should let the people pass you. Lots of people forget about that, even the supposed "clean" people.

I used to do this, but in my experience I realised it was a surefire way of getting wiped out from crashing cars. So now I just try to make my way to front as quickly as possible. No-one can wreck me if I'm in the lead... that is unless someone PIT's me :sly:

Just started racing online and had an epic race in a 500pp road cars event on the ring. I was driving a Honda Civic Type R 97 and had it tunes to around 405pp, but was a really close race. Finished 4th in the end, but it was fairly clean and only a few bumps and scrapes (expected on the ring) and yeah... Really enjoyed it. I know that when I'm racing, I tend to favour corner speed rather than straight line speed, so I usually get smoked down the straights. When someone is passing me, I just move over and try and out brake for the next corner. If I can't pass, I'll try and stay with them and harass into corners, but never try making a move that I think won't stick. I use the same set of rules when I'm karting, and so I think everyone should have to obey some kind of rule system.

PD should setup a dirty driver point system, like the penalty system for bumping other cars.
So when you open a lobby you can choose the max. dirty point level for others to join.
If there own dirty point level are to high, they will not be able to join the lobby.

But they have the option to reduce there dirty points when driving clean in next races...

I agree, that point system would be good. Perhaps a black flag system, so if you get a black flag 5 times, you can't join a race if the host has the feature turned on. I like this idea, that way you'd know when entering the race that you are probably racing against clean drivers.

I've found starting from the back is actually as good as starting from the front. If you start from the front and make it round the first corner fast, you'll most probably pull out a lead (unless someone clobbers you at the first braking point for the left+right complex) and can just watch the others going all over the place in your rear view mirror.

If you start from the back, you can carefully watch the others and as soon as you see someone spin out just pick a clean line past him. Needs some patience and some luck but usually I make it past everyone without getting hit.

If you start from the middle though, you're doomed :indiff: it's really hard to hold your temper when you're braking for someone slower in front of you and someone behind you thinks he can magically pass through you if he keeps the accelerator floored.

Racing online can be extremely frustrating unless you can find a really good group of people to race with. Another important etiquette would be for lap cars to make way for the leaders. If your not in contention for the win the stay out of the way. I can't tell you how many wins I've lost solely due to the fact that a lap car wanted to race me blocking my line.

Agree! I always wait till the track is clear before re entering the track. Even if that means parking for a few seconds till things clear. I made the mistake and should pay the price. It is uncool to enter the track in front of people that have a full head of steam.

Enjoyed the video. Some great pointers in there.

If you race as cleanly as you can, let those you've disadvantaged by mistakes overtake you and apologize for them after the race, you are doing all you need to do.

Apologizing for mistakes keeps the red mist form descending on a room.

Sadly I really don't think anything can be done about these awful drivers. It's kind of like Call of Duty for me, I try to avoid using the cheap weapons despite everyone else using them. Yeah, I don't do nearly as well as I would with a better gun, but atleast I played "fair".

I thought if you were lapping a car they became ghost like?

I like how Codemasters penalty system works on their F1 games, people would get time penalties at the end of the race or even DQ'ed. Not country bashing or anything here but it would always be the Spanish or French getting penalties/DQ'ed. Don't get me wrong i would see plenty of other nations getting penalties but no where near the amount that the Spanish and French got.
