Just started playing, and for me, as someone who's bought and enjoyed all three Forza games, as well as a great deal of arcade racing games, this blows everything way, way out of the water. I'll fully admit to all of it's faults, but the parts it gets right are exceptional. As soon as I got to the menu it just felt like I was home. GT6 has a lot of improvements to make, but I'm completely over the moon with this.

Since when is liking Top Gear a pre-requisite to liking cars? ;)

They dont have to say "Wow! The Top Gear track is awesome!".... people who like Top Gear will already know the track and will know whether they want a game with the track included. People who dont give a rat's arse about Top Gear will probably agree that its uninspiring.

That's probably why they shouldn't have mentioned it. If you like flying planes, a plane game will be fun, otherwise it's uninspiring and bland. If you like shooting games, a shooting game will be fun, otherwise...

You also speak of mainstream reviews, but don't forget that Top Gear is a mainstream show. It's audience ranges from everyone to everyone, hell even my little sister watches it and she has practically zero interest in cars. A lot of people who buy GT5 are going to know the track so it's not as though the reviewer can really speak of it as though it's a niche addition that only caters to a small number of fans.

I'm not really sure why people are surprised (if they are). GT5 was never meant to be a game to please the masses. This should have been clear when PD announced the premium-standard thing. No one that enjoys racing games like NFS and other arcade games more than the GT series is ever going to care about how well the cars are modelled. They would most definitely think modelling cars to that extent in a video game is a waste of time and money.

It is simply a matter of what kind of gamer you are. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but am fascinated by cars. So, getting GT5 is a no brainer for me. If FM was multi-platform, I would have bought that too. I haven't played FM for more than 5 minutes at a time, so I can't really comment on how good/bad it is, but what I can say is that the teams at PD and T10 had two separate target markets in mind.

The reviewers that are part of GTs target market will give it awesome reviews, and those who aren't....won't be so generous.

now reviews make sense... i was expecting something between a 8.5 and 9.5 . Glad some sites give it a 10/10 ...but in general, 9.0 and 9.5 is ok... ( i think the game deserves 10...but recognizes also that it has bugs and bad aspects that can bother casual and general players )

Incase anyone hasnt had a chance to see my Gran Turismo video review posted in the reviews and impressions section here it is again:

Some significant things I would like to emphasise to enthusiasts in particular is just how much better the force feedback is then prologue, the steering goes light as you go over jumps, and as you lock up under braking. Driving without ABS is challenging but immense fun. :)

I think the IGN closing comments is spot on. Some aspects could be improved (and come on, as much as you wanna flame me, what are patches for) but as a whole its utterly brilliant.

Even beyond the 1,000 cars, dozens of track variations, countless modes, gorgeous visuals and mountains of options, Gran Turismo 5 has something more that speaks to the world's car lovers and racing fans. The level of care taken by the people at Polyphony Digital shines in every aspect of this title, and this makes for a racing game that truly has no parallel. Gran Turismo 5 is a massive love letter to those that love cars. This is their dream videogame.

I just realised how much I hate this forum. At first I was observing before signing up and most of what I saw was everyone arguing with each other and I thought about how annoying it was and here I am having been sucked into the same attitude.

Shame on you, shame on me.

We are all sucked in, it's some special force,he,he,he.
That is why I love this and other forums, i can argue with others and share the same thoughts, but i never take it personally. We are all different and with different views, so it's bound to happen that we argue, even on the silly things like video games :-).

On topic: I don't understand why PD didn't explain certain points to reviewers, especially if they need to be unlock at certain point in-game.

You dont even want to see some of the other games they gave great scores to. There's a thread on gamefaqs listing them, I dont even feel like finding it at this point.

Whats your point, if it gives it a high score it doesnt count, low then the review is correct? Edge who is usually very tough gave it a 9/10, as did gamepro. reviews are very good overall.

Playstation Lifestyle : 10/10

Gran Turismo 5 is the pinnacle of the racing simulation genre. After years of technological progression, hardware is finally powerful enough to provide Polyphony Digital the platform needed to deliver such an unbelievably lifelike experience. Kaz Yamauchi’s passion for the racing sphere shines through every aspect of the game. The incredibly-detailed cars, the slick presentation, the spot-on physics. Polyphony Digital brought its A-game. Nothing else on the market can come close to the realism and immersion you feel throughout. Gran Turismo 5 is virtual racing at its very best.

PlayStation LifeStyle’s Final Score 10/10

+Gameplay is the best in the genre

+Cars, tracks, even menus – everything is presented gorgeously

+Tons of modes and new features really help to expand on the driving sim experience

I think reviews will improve over time, the more time reviewers have to play the game and the mor they will appreciate it and discover the great handling and physics engine of the game (which is for me the most important aspect in a simulation racing game)

It sounds to me like it confirms my worst suspicions about the game: PD bit off more than they could chew, leaving the released game a dog's breakfast of half-realized ambitions. If the physics, FFB & online are good, it will be fine for committed sim-racing fans. However, the fact that the AI & collision physics (as well as sound & damage) are still so poor means that the offline game is still going to be significantly sub-par, which means as a game it really doesn't measure up to other racing titles. Of course the compensation, as ever with GT, is that the car graphics (well, some of them at least) will look amazing, and the track graphics will also be superior to any other racing game, which is going to be enough to sell the game. Add to that the weather & time-of-day effects, & you have a game that drives well & looks great, but still falls short in other respects.

In summary, GT5 is pretty much exactly as I had expected it would be. Obviously a high-quality title. However, when you're spending many, many times the amount of time & money that any other developer is spending, it's reasonable to expect more. I think PD needs some fresh ideas in there to shake things up a bit.

I think people feel you must have some sort of passion to review GT5. Video game sites will review it as a *game*, I think its totally fair if there's a mix of reviewers who do and dont like sims reviewing the game. If you want the opinions of people who already love the GT series, read these forums, if you're looking for opinions of people who love racing sims, read ISR, racesimcentral, race department, etc. If you're looking for an opinion targetted at your average gamer, then read mainstream reviews.

No no, I don't say liking... I just say knowing what it is :) It may be simple for the average gamer or whatever. But for a car nut, even if you don't know what Top Gear is (and if you're a car nut at least you'll know what it is.) you may agree that an empty airfield with some cones is definitelly a COOL place to test your car.

Example?

Maybe I've just written in a bad way. But the track is very well modeled and accurate with its real counterpart. And Cape Ring looks really awesome. But they said that they are "bland and uninspiring" And thats just bullcrap. What do they want? Mario Kart tracks with turtles or futuristic effects like Wipeout?

And I agree about what you said. The right thing its just to keep ourselves away from the mainstream reviews. Most GT players here are car lovers, so the reviews that are going to interest us are the ones made by car nuts.

And the rest... well, trolls are all over us... they want their food... all over there. So, don't feed 'em.

I don't know why, but I'm not surprised with this rating...

I just read ps3.ign.com's review. 8.5/10????? NFS: HP got a 9 and Forza 3 got a 9.4 which I don't get. Comparing to Forza I understand but NFS??? That's an arcade racer. And of course they brought up damage and the fact it's not up to par with NFS HP which was developed by the same people who made Burnout. Maybe most of them are Nascar fans, love to see crashes. Oh well. I kind of had a feeling they were going to hate on the game even though SOME things I actually agree with (no brake tuning/upgrade???).

There is nothing wrong with the AI in this game. The sound is much better than ever and damage kicks in once you are at a higher level. Can't comment on collision physics because I try not to hit other cars.

A game can only be as good as it's worst features.

A game is reviewed on the sum of all parts. Forza 3 was mediocre in some aspect but it all worked together when looking at the complete package.

GT5 excels in some aspects but fails at others.

Great review. Thanks 👍

i think all the reviews both negatives and positives are good. i loved ign's review, very honest.
Kazanuri needs to hear these things instead of sitting pretty on his high horse in a bubble.

Many reviews have already confirmed that the physics is the best on console, thats why i am into it, the physics, i could care less about damage, i drive in gt like i do in real life so i will also respect the ai and other drivers making the game more challenging for me.

Hopefully they (PD and kazanuri) will take all the reviews to heart and not spend another 6 years and $60million to come out with GT6, if so Kazanuri should be fired, yeah i said it, hehehe

GameSpot surprisingly released a statement last night that said that they wouldn't be releasing their review for a while as they want to do a "thorough" play through that incorporates online play.

However, it did post it's average critic and gamer review scores:

Critic Score: 8.8 after 6 Reviews.
User Score: 9.1 after 209 reviews.

That User Score is the one that matters.

Totally agree here! The game has its flaws but it's still the best carporn on the market. Never played GT-series before and skipped all 5-6 years of hype ,therefore my expectations were kinda low. Back to topic. Idc about reviews, the only thing I care about is the realism and I got what I wanted.
