In GT5, it is not possible to shift to a higher gear when giving it throttle. Whether you use a G27, or a Fanatec, I have noticed that you have to fully release the throttle. This is unrealistic.

In real life, I can bounce off my rev-limiter and shift into ANY gear I want.

If you don't understand what I am explaining, try holding the throttle at 100% and shift. I will remain in NEUTRAL and wont go into gear... This makes no sense....

Yes, everyone with a G25/G27/Fanatec has spotted this. It's there for a reason, to stop people flat-shifting, which in the real world will destroy your gearbox in minutes. Yes it's not ideal, and yes there should be some 'give' as far as you should be able to shift with a little throttle or wheelspin (it's a bigger problem in drifting than racing as you can't upshift mid-drift), but it's better than allowing everyone to flat-shift, which would be totally unrealistic.

Yes you can do what you do in your real life car, but you're destroying the synchromeshes in your gearbox. Even if you don't realise it yet, you will down the line :)

Because you aren't using a clutch as you're using a DFGT. LOL Read the post properly before posting :D

Definitely agree with you on this. It constantly causes me to miss shifts. I feel like I have 2-3 missed shifts every time I run the ring online. I'm thinking to myself "for ****'s sake, I've never owned an automatic car in my life, I drive a stick everyday, don't tell me I don't know how to shift". Having a real hard time getting used to that. It's especially bad in RWD cars where you're partially spinning off the line and trying to get that 1-2 shift to work. Frustrating for sure.

Definitely agree with you on this. It constantly causes me to miss shifts. I feel like I have 2-3 missed shifts every time I run the ring online. Tell me about it. I think it's partly down to the on/off way that the clutch works and the fact that it is not activated until quite far down the travel of the pedal. It would at least help if the clutch was activated by the very slightest touch on the pedal, as then there would be less chance of touching lifting off the clutch too soon.

I've played with it and I'm about 99% certain the source of the issue is the gas pedal. It wants the revs to drop a certain amount before it'll go into the next gear (which is why there's the exacerbated wait time when you've got wheel spin going). You can hold the clutch pedal in as long as you want, it won't go into gear until you come off the gas and the revs drop a little.
 
I agree ... it is really crazy. They could at least enable that in drift mode ... it is EXTREMELY annoying.
 
I think I power shift occassionally in real life ... Have a short shifter fitted so I can change gear really quick, so makes more sense to stay on the throttle lol :P

So basically when driving a wheel / pedal set with a clutch in GT5 you lift off the throttle, depress the clutch, change gear, and then feed the throttle in as you come off of the clutch ...

And then when down shifting you heel & toe ... Sounds pretty simple to me and much like real life ... I think power shifting should be left out of GT5 though, raw driving doesn't include power shifting ... Anyone who knows how to drive in real life has probably have never ever power shifted.

I'm not talking about power shifting, I don't leave my foot on the gas, it's that the game apparently thinks I'm trying to get the shifter into gear too quickly. I come completely off the accelerator every time but, at times, it just stays in neutral and free revs. It's very sensitive to where the gas pedal is and it makes shifting quickly very difficult.
 
See this is why a DFGT is so much better than the G25/G27 ... Would never want the added clutch to deal with ... I know it is a driving simulator and I do love driving manuals IRL but it is just too serious for a game ... DFGT is definately best :)

Read my article please, and run through the test conditions with your clutch and manual shift setups and report back your findings. From AT w/ DS3 pad using the Lotus Elise 111R test car in the test scenarios, I actually found the fastest lap times were produced with single plate and sports flywheel combination.

How to select and optimize drivetrain components, and the not so obvious effects.

Heya mate,

I have just had a quick skim through this and I just wanted to ask a quick question: Most of my cars become very slippery online ... My Corvette ZR1 RM for example (although I can quite easily manage it) when offline it is really easy to drive so are you suggesting that if I try a different drivetrain set up that my Vette will handle better? (I am going to go and test this in a bit btw so I'll pass back any feedback)

Yes, try different drivetrain components. Unfortunately, all of the RM and race cars are hard locked into twin plate and semi-race flywheel, or race equivalent parts, and cannot be downgraded. However, you can distinguish the available differences by testing it on a non-RM and other standard models.

The work around for erratic handling from the semi-race flywheel on cars which it cannot be unequipped is to bump up the LSD acceleration value until the behavior becomes less apparent, 45-50 on light weight cars where these issues are most prevalent from my testing.

You don't HAVE to use the clutch on the G25, it can be turned on or off. The simple fact is, the G25 steering is much more precise than the DFGT. I've got both so I can tell you from first hand experience. Plus you can still use the h-pattern without the clutch ;)

Is this a simulator or not? In real life, you don't damage anything as long as you are not flast-shifting.. And if you are, you do not damage synchros.. You just wear your clutch faster... You can have throttle at 100%, and as long as you fully clutch and engage, you will only wear the clutch...

So, what about the people that are using sequential shifters... Aren't they flat-shifting? And if it does matter, just have damage on, where your clutch (/tranny as you say) wears out and you're out of the race..
 
The 1-2 shift always catches me... It's like a motorcycle... drops into neutral if u try to shift too fast and not firm enough. Super annoying. None of the other gearshifts get me, just 1->2. 👎

Why is that?
 
It is a stupid when you're using car's that have a racing "dog box" equipped and then have to pause the throttle between shifts.
 
PD allowed flatshifting back in the early days of GT5 Prologue, however the leader boards filled top times with G25 owners (pretty much the only H pattern shifter wheel at the time supported anyway) doing nothing but flat shifting and they had a slight advantage to all other wheel users. At one point they patched and removed the ability to flat shift.

My biggest gripe with what they have now is during heavy wheel spin (like while drifting) you will get thrown to neutral if you try shifting with the clutch while the tyres are still spinning well above road speed even if you full lift the throttle. This requires not only a lift in throttle but a small pause waiting for the wheel spin to calm before shifting with the clutch.

Best solution IMO would be to just have damagable transmissions/drivetrain and let flat shifting return.
 
I got a G25 which get a bit use use when the living room is clear of kids etc (hardly ever!!)


If I was to experiment with clutch, how do I engage it.


IIRC it's something like triangle as you cross the start line, is this right ???

Just press it (clutch) and it is activated.

In GT5P you had to press triangle first but not in GT5 thankfully.
