Then any photomode shot is a bullshot.

Need I post this again?

Did anyone ever spot any signs of LOD changes in GT5:P or any subsequent gameplay then?

You really don't know the differences between photmode shots and real-time captures? Photomode shots have far more post-processing than you get in real-time. Anti-aliasing, texture filtering, resolution, motion blur and the list goes on. For example, in real-time the game has 4xMSAA at best. I can't tell you exactly how much AA photomode shots have, but I assure you it's far more than 4x.

What I meant is, if you're willing to allow far better anti-aliasing and many other improvements in your "not bullshot" category, you should also allow higher LOD. It would still be only using game assets, just not in the same way it does in real-time. Much like AA, texture filtering, motion blur, etc...

By the way, I was just following your logic. I don't consider photomode shots to be bullshots, even though they are misleading to the uninformed gamer.

LOD changes, yes. LOD differences between garage and race models "a la" GT4, no.

There are differences between garage and race models in GT5P (and as you can see in Jag's screen shots it will probably be the same in full GT5, but IMO it's stupid that they don't swap them with garage models in photo mode - like in Forza 3)).
What's important on some cars you can't spot the differences but on others they are quite huge...

ps. sorry for my English

Really? I really tried to see differences between them but they look pretty much the same. The only difference I actually saw was a simpler interior when you look at race models from outside, like the chase cam. Other than that they look pretty much identical, so much that I think they are, the exterior I mean.

everyone look at the dealer model of the California then look at the right side shield during a race. its backwards therefore different models.

bs
Look at Suzuki Cappucino (especially rear side) or Audi R8 (mainly exhaust pipes/tips). Also almost all cars have less polys on wheel arches.
If you REALLY want I can take some off-screen pics to show you some differences ;)

e: On the other side almost all Ferraris, or GT by CItroen are identical (almost identical - you cant's spot the difference) to garage models. I hope it will stay like that for full game (eventually it could be like that Jag, where only engine bay is simplyfied).

ps. sorry if my English is bad...

lol After you really see all the detail of each car, you then start understanding why there are only 200+ premium cars which is an accomplishment even of of itself.

These screenshots really do represent an artist at heart and someone who has dedicated his whole life to the automobile.

I salute you Kazunori Yamauchi and Polyphony Digital!! Oh, and tranlator-san!! Can't forget him!

I totally agree with you !

and yet, strangely enough, some people are still arguing and denying the amazing accomplishment achieved by polyphony digital with GT5, blaming them of bad management and wasting resources and precious time in modeling those 200+ premium cars

like on this thread :

sometimes it just amazes me how some people are against progess...

They look the same to me. Different conditions that change lighting and, of course, a different colour body-shell (BMW) but the models don't seem different at all. That's probably because the in-game model doesn't change when you use Photo Mode 'in-game'.

Photo Travel uses different models exclusive of LoD so it can always be as detailed as PD want it to be.

I have noticed in GT5P that the models have one LoD change...I doubt GT5 will be any different.

I have to say that the replay run at higher resolution.

It's not that beautiful when you actually play the game, as you can see in the screen shots below.

Those screenshots are degraded and do not represent what you see in the game.
I don't have GT5P, but surely GT Academy didn't look that jaggy on my HD-ready TV (at 720p).

Wow who cares if you can see the screw in full detail when you race? Common people have you got no other hobbies than looking all day for things that you can severely criticize in GT5?

well whats the point if you CANT see it when racing? its like why go to all that effort... and people are only going to see the 60% version of it when they race

sure some ppl watch the replays but probably race more than they watch...

dont get me wrong i like the effort but surely they could have just focused on the race modelling and then released the game quicker? instead of piutting so much effort into things that you will never see in game?

Ai cars got less detailed when they were further away from the player car.

Yeah, it's quite noticeable. Although, the whole idea of LoD is to fade out the detail at a point where the detail is no longer "visible" (at the sub-pixel-level).
Unfortunately, the process of making a lower detail model can introduce artifacts, like low-res textures which have the wrong average colour for the detail they're replacing. This looks like "popping", even when it appears beyond the range that the extra detail would be visible. Similarly for badly silhouetted lower-detail models.

GT5:P had both of these issues (indeed, most games do!)
There is no question that GT5:P uses different LoDs when racing, but what we can't be certain of is the presence of a different LoD bias - that is, the effective minimum (or maximum, I can't remember the convention - I mean the highest detail level) LoD allowed to be displayed for a given model in a given circumstance.

The amount of times I've come in this thread and seen people debating polygons or some random crap and NOT seeing any images of GT5 zoomed in is terrible 👎

Maybe on your TV and I say this because I have a B-set, a 27'' Sanyo 720p which looks nowhere near how good it looked on my A-set Aquos 42 @1080p. And that was just Prologue.

Not to mention proper screen settings (i like deep rich blacks, high contrast with medium sharpness and medium saturation) which affect the image alot.

It's hard to tell because they are differnt angles but the Ferrari P4 in replays headlights look more Polygon-y than the Photomode, which makes sense, but its hard to really tell.

Here's my contribution, where's yours?

Notice how the cube-maps are from a low-detail background, and don't include the other cars. This is probably to avoid recursive stuff, like rendering the reflection of itself in the reflection of another car.

This thread was created to showcase the detail in the scenes in GT5; equally, then, one could discuss the lack of detail, too. Questions obviously arise, then there are those citing falsities about why detail is or isn't present. Naturally, these are probably best quashed with some facts ;)

Where the heck did you get those screen shots from?! Those are terrible dude! It looks like something running on a PS1, and for sure looks nothing like Prologue on my TV running in 1080p mode.

Post processing (anti-aliasing, motion blur) couldn't differ more from significant changes to the game's actual graphics (models, textures, lighting).

Those screenshots are horrible; they've clearly been upscaled from a very low resolution, and as such don't represent what the game actually looks like at all. Here's a genuine, direct feed screenshot.

Do you play on a plasma?

This is my favourite:

I could have done deeper crop for headlights which also is amazing but I think the whole car needs to be highlighted because it's just

This more or less sums the situation up - from where I stand, at least. ;)

I always feel any re-posting of xkcd should include the alt-text; in this case:
"What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"

Computer graphics is just numbers, at the end of the day - render pipelines change across releases, hardware iterations etc. such that what constitutes an asset and what is an effect is a bit of a hard line to draw.

Quick clarification: LoD is not continuous in GT5:P, so it uses discrete levels, not a progressive shift - all of which must be loaded into memory; "tossing" the highest level saves quite a chunk of memory. The same philosophy applies for texture mipmaps; by using a positive mipmap bias, the effective texture "quality" can be set globally.

In GT5 it seems we can now place multiple cars in one scene for the photo-travel locations. Whether these still use the highest LoD remains to be seen.

With the Brera, that's one of the more obvious 'game' shots I've seen of GT5.

Post processing (anti-aliasing, motion blur) couldn't differ more from significant changes to the game's actual graphics (models, textures, lighting).

I couldn't disagree more. The graphics are a sum of all parts. Imagine a developer releases screenshots of their PS3 game with 16xAA and 16xAF claiming they are real-time captures, but the game running in a PS3 actually has bilinear texture filtering and no AA. I wouldn't say they have the same graphics, not even nearly.

Photo mode shots have AA that the PS3 can't even dream about achieving in real-time. And there's no denying it makes the game look a hell of a lot better. So why not also using the highest quality 3D model available, that the PS3 also can't handle in real-time?

It's not like they are entirely different models made specially to render bullshots.

What's the bickering? It's not like everyone here isn't going to create a HUGE DAMN GALLERY of all the pictures they take in Photo Mode...

I zoomed in on a level of the building at the Red Bull Hangar 7 and found some nude art. :D
Being a nude art enthusiast, I took some pictures. :D

I also saw a cute little 'Red Bull' figure.

Third shot is this weird bird statue at the Red Bull Hangar right above the Lamborghini. Does anyone know what this is? Looks like a Decepticon Robot.

I guess this is the bird the OP was talking about.
