I just want to share my opinion in the shadows of the game....I'm not a game developer, I play a lot of video games...when I play PC games and I setting a game's shadows to high, the game's frame-rate drops significantly more than when I set the textures, effects, anything other than the shadows to high..... And in the case of GT5, we already see the details on the track and especially the premium cars, and seeing the shadows jagged doesn't really surprise me, its like the shadows are in "medium"....so making the shadows at settings like "high" for me would make the game 30FPS in my opinion...and Yamauchi already stated that he targets fluid 60fps...

Yeah the Shadows in GT5 ruins the game in one way, especially when you play the replay. I mean WTH?! how did they miss this and released it with this major screw up? That's a pretty bad graphic issue.
They better fix this soon, bothers me badly! Looks horibble!

I heard you can fix this issue by downgrading your TV resolution to 720p, but I mean c-mon do you realy want to drop from image quality of 1080p to 720p? Prologue had no issue with this as GT5 does.

I don't care one bit about the shadows.

Yeah you're right, they should be perfect. How could Kaz be so lazy not to make everything 100% perfect and not include every car that's ever graced the earth?

I think its a fair point, it doesn't need the Catty comments. The shadows are almost 8bit like in their appearance. I hope they can improve them, like a lot of things.

You guys are ignorant! This ruins the image of the game! WTH!?? GT5 is the exapmle of the amazing graphic engine of PS3 and it gets pretty much ruined with lazy jiggly/pixalated shodows. watch the replay and it's impossible to not noticed it and say "what the heck!??" You can't enjoy this like that! sucks!

don't get me wrong i like GT5 and a big fan, but this needs to be fixed.
That's the only big issue I can complain about! =( and it's reasonable.

it's a pretty big fair point! thanks... I mean the car quality and tracks and everything looks amazing/top notch but then the pixalated shodows jump, moves everywhere, all over the ground and the car! WOW that really ruins the perfect image.

My brain compensates these what you call imperfections. It's called 'imagination'

My brain imagines GT1 to look nearly as good as GT5, as I haven't looked at it for many years, but the reality would show up the deficiencies GT1. The reality of GT5 is that some of the shadows are a disgrace, not pointing the problems out and imagining them away does nobody any good. :banghead:

I have tried all sorts of display resolution settings, shadows still suck and look like 1992 PC game shadows.

All I want is shadows cause by parts of the car on the car to be off as they are the worst and they not even that important. If you don't understand what I mean, I want shadows made by lips of the car or rear wings on the car to off as they are ugly.

For me, I only really notice the low res shadow mapping in the replays and and the very start of the race when the camera pans.

To be honest, I think for the tracks that don't have day/night transition they should go back to fixed fake shadows for the track side objects and fake the shadows on the cars as in GT4 and the older games. This way, the objects casting shadows on the track can be much higher res. At least in the replays - there are some pretty horrible tree shadows on the tracks in the game.

I don't see many other racing games with these issues ?

If you'd used the search option you would have found that this was allready discussed to death.

And Kaz allready commented on it in interviews and via Twitter.
It appears to have someting to do with the wide camera angles.
I don't know exactly becouce I don't realy care..

Your attempts at damage control are funny. You seem to like to take legitimate complaints and exaggerate them to extremes to defend the game. I am sure you know what they call people who do that, but you probably think your being reasonable.

But other people do, so if members want to keep posting about it, is it all right with you?

Oh come on!! This has been done to death, and if you insist on sharing your view on the shadows, why not do it in one of the other threads about this very subject... is it really necessary to start a new thread?

Shadows don't bother me. Infact, I never noticed them until I read it here in forums.

Exactly. The dynamic shadows on everything, for which we have to thank the day/night transitions.

All because for some reason someone thought it was vital that we see sun-rise and sun-set on a couple of tracks, we get these crappy shadows all the time. I can only imagine that they didn't realise the shadows would be so crappy until the day/night thing was near finished, because I don't think they would have started knowing how it would turn out.

It's a folly. It ruins the look of premium cars which are supposed to wow us, and makes them a waste of time in anything but photomode.

Just imagine how good GT5 could have looked had they not set their sights so high.
Would it have been so bad to just have night-time and day-time separately?

Console only gamers are so ignorant about graphics.

If you're a PC gamer and you're used to adjusting shadow quality, texture quality and resolution you immediately understand that there is only so much your hardware can handle and you have to choose the best overall settings to get the most playable frame rate.

No, you can't just turn everything on HIGH and still get good framerate.

👍 Exactly.
If they can't fix the selfshadows on the car, they should disable it. Disabling the selfshadows at this stage, would make the game look even better.
Sort it out or get rid of them.

Errr, whose to say we don't play PC games as well? You comment is a little ignorant in itself. I've played my fair share of rFactor and iRacing, and I'm well familiar with the concept of tweaking GFX settings.

Problem is, there are no GFX settings to be had here. The game has been optimised for the hardware. Period. They made comprises with the shadows to keep the frame rate up, pure and simple. I think that's a concept that most are familiar with here.

they should also fix the pixelated smoke and the weird thing going on with the smoke around the car. im sure most of you know what i meant about the smoke border that occurs in photomode.

I would have happily sacrificed a couple of cars in a race to get the overall graphics correct. Maybe that's a simplistic view, but they kept on saying that car models took up so much of the graphics power of the game. :irked:

I find it both funny and sad how people keep trying to defend the problems.

Champion the good points and the things you like, but please don't defend the sometimes huge problems. :boggled: The length of time the game took to develop does have a bearing on the expectations, that said whether it was 2,3,4 5+ years, there are things wrong with this game that shouldn't be in a game of this size and significance to Sony and the games industry imho.

Shadows don't affect the driving.

I'm grumpy, been gaming for 27 years. Things have never looked better. Yet there is always somebody moaning about something, not looking exactly like real life these days.

PS5 maybe... then we can concentrate on the gameplay.

The shadows are not a huge problem though. When I drive I don't even notice it, because you know I'm somehow otherwise occupied...

In fact, I know, lets go 720, 30 fps and 6 cars with no anti aliasing... then we can have nice shadows.

I think most console gamers don't get that concept at all. If you've played any PC game where you have control over the shadow quality you know what a HUGE hit it is to your frame rate.

Shadow quality is usually one of the first things that I turn down if I'm struggling with framerate.

Some here think that PD was just too busy to make smooth shadows. The fact is they were targeting 60 fps at 1080p on a console. They certainly had to cut back on shadow quality to get those framerates.

It's just idiotic for people to say "fix the shadows."

Overall the game looks fantastic---for a console game. And in some cases, the car models and lighting, it sometimes looks better than most PC games. That's quite an accomplishment.

In all honesty, I wouldn't mind a 30FPS GT5. I think that would have freed up a lot of memory for other things. But that is probably just me.

Either fix the shadows or give us an option to turn them off.
