GT5's Shadow

The thing is, we can see from Prologue what GT5 *could* have looked like. But they chose to push other graphical parts further and reduce the shadow quality.

They went a step too far I feel. Prologue worked and looked good. There's something to be said for aiming high, but there's also something to be said for knowing your limitations and knowing when to say stop.

The shadows are not a huge problem though. When I drive I don't even notice it, because you know I'm somehow otherwise occupied...

The shadows are but one of the problems I have with the game sadly. Well done for proving my point by saying it is not a problem though. ;)

Exactly. The dynamic shadows on everything, for which we have to thank the day/night transitions.

All because for some reason someone thought it was vital that we see sun-rise and sun-set on a couple of tracks, we get these crappy shadows all the time. I can only imagine that they didn't realise the shadows would be so crappy until the day/night thing was near finished, because I don't think they would have started knowing how it would turn out.

It's a folly. It ruins the look of premium cars which are supposed to wow us, and makes them a waste of time in anything but photomode.

Just imagine how good GT5 could have looked had they not set their sights so high.
Would it have been so bad to just have night-time and day-time separately?

Very well put and exactly what they should've done. They should've just done it as static day and static night without the transition. Whether many of you like it or not, this is a pretty big screwup that should've never happened.

It's not that big of a deal, while your playing how often are you looking at the shadows? I'm willing to bet half of people wouldn't have noticed if it hadn't been pointed out.

I noticed it within 10 seconds of my first race.

If you don't notice it you're either blind or stupid.

Stands out like a sore thumb.

I think most console gamers don't get that concept at all. If you've played any PC game where you have control over the shadow quality you know what a HUGE hit it is to your frame rate.

I think it's far more common to see the opposite argument. PC gamers spend retarded amounts of money making games look good, then accuse of console games for looking sub-par because we don't upgrade our graphics cards every 6 months. You seem to be a one-off.

It is constantly noticable.

If you drive in cokcpit view all you see are jagged shadows moving across your view the entire time.

It is pathetic.

If the PS3 hardware cant handle it, why did PD insist on going there?

A 3 year old $500 PC and the $30 rFactor with the FREE HistoriX mod looks better and smoother at 60fps and 1980x1024. With multiple camera angles, replay manager, completely tuneble cars, weather and dynamic graphics and very decent AI all with 30 cars on track at once..

The point is that PD could have expanded GTHD/GT5P to more cars and tracks and kept the various features without going overboard and releasing GT5 as a supposedly better title bu tthat turned out unfinished.

That is the real point.

I wish they turned off the flickering. Flickering ontop of the bonnet doesn't make sense, there shouldn't be shadows there.

Turning off self shadowing completely is the lesser of the 2 evils

I dont care about shadows, on PC games shadows are the first option I turn down to make a game run smoother. I'd rather have a baziliion cars running at 34355 fps thanks

i dont know for sure but when i played some b-specs it looked like all the shadows are were as they should be, in all camera positions they looked good.
so tecnically it would not be a problem i guess

+1 on that!!! I think it's the biggest one that ruins the image of the game! Sad to see it.

LOL ^^^ right on. Now listen to THIS! I was soo proud when GT5 come out, that my older brother who's 30 years old (non gamer) wanted to come and take a look at the amazing, long waited GT5 everyone waited for soooo long. I even picked the best looking track with the hottest car from my garage. ...The first 10+ seconds of the race and later, he says... "wow is this the final release version?" "what's up with the shodows?.... "how could they screw up and release it like that???" <<<< I gotta say I felt bad for GT5, cause Im a HUGE fan and was ready to defend it ...but what he said I couldn't say nothing against it, cause he was right :indiff:

Why are people deffending these hideous shadows? GT fan or not their horrible, They don't even really look like shadows. I'm just stating the truth, As a die hard fan of GT,But i'm sure they will no doubt become fixed.

I love GT5, I have almost too much, but yea, the shadows are horrific.

I play gt5 at 1080p. It NEVER runs at 60fps. The shadows look horrible on a lot of the daytime tracks. I wish they had just used their artistic creativity to make light showcase the cars, rather than trying to simulate real-life light in a computer (which is and always will be impossible).

It's the real DRIVING simulator, not the real light simulator.

You have to admit, the way the sunlight works is AMAZING! If they can only get the shadows right...

Im guessing 1.05 update didn't fix the horrid low resolution shadows?

The update does have some neat new things but they need to fix the big screw up asap!

I just want to share my opinion in the shadows of the game....I'm not a game developer, I play a lot of video games...when I play PC games and I setting a game's shadows to high, the game's frame-rate drops significantly more than when I set the textures, effects, anything other than the shadows to high..... And in the case of GT5, we already see the details on the track and especially the premium cars, and seeing the shadows jagged doesn't really surprise me, its like the shadows are in "medium"....so making the shadows at settings like "high" for me would make the game 30FPS in my opinion...and Yamauchi already stated that he targets fluid 60fps...

...and yet GT5 still doesn't run at a constant 60 fps.

lol

I'd like to see them return to how they were in prologue. Prologue still had the flickering self shadowing which was pretty bad in itself, now though the self shadowing is worse and the shadowing on environments has also been sacrificed badly! I'm pretty sure the shadows in Prologue were dynamic as well, so why couldn't they just keep them?!
