Why is it that in GT6 online racing... a car from behind bumps me at a corner and knocks me off, then is able to drive off miles into the distance unhindered.

Then when the next race comes and this time I'm behind. I then do an identical bump to the same car from behind while at the very same corner turn, as seen numerous times on the replay, but I then get a ramming penalty imposed?

I've seen complaints about this on the Worst You've Dealt With Online thread.
So you're not alone.
Lots have been frustrated by that.

The in-game penalty system has flaws. (Not only that, but flaws that some people know well how to exploit. :odd:)

In the replay... check the person who did NOT get the penalty.
It could be that they were completely off throttle and full-on the brakes before the impact.
And look at yours in the replay.
It could be that you were still on throttle and maybe only started braking after the impact.

If that's the case, I'll definately have a look later tonight when I get home. Are there any guidelines as to what imposes a penalty and what doesn't in order to make it more clear? as I know in the real world any collision directly from behind is always the fault of the driver who made contact, and the driver behind (and often with a better viewing position) is usually always held accountable. It's not always the case here

Any lobbies that runs penalties is fine by me. For the most part the system is okay.

Except for lobbies that run penalties on strong at Monza/any track with significant chicanes. The amount of times I've been dive bombed into ALL of the chicanes in the game and absolutely punted onto the grass, be given a shortcut penalty, cutting my engine... preventing me from saving a spin and having to rejoin the track in last place. And the person responsible is allowed to run off at full speed to do it again.

Or like turn one at Ascari... Absolutely molested into turn one. I get a 3 second shortcut penalty and a free trip across the grass accelerator free. They get a 5 second ramming penalty. But by the time I've managed to gain any sort of traction on the grass and rejoin the track... we're back side by side into turn 2... and i get destroyed again because "blocking noob"

Not that it bothers me or anything. But for the most part they work well.

When setting up online lobbies I enable strong penalties + heavy damage. People are more likely to avoid contact with other cars if they know that 1 single collision could damage their car and end their race.

The people i play with tried that. But it often devolved into "You damaged my car last race, so i will stick you into the wall every race after until im kicked"

As someone who loves watching motorsport on TV & in turn loves watching replays in Gran Turismo, I always have the penalties turned off in any lobbies I run. Because, not only does it make a mockery of the racing, but they also ruin the replays when you see cars turning invisible & driving through each other. I've watched a lot of motorsport & have never seen that happen in real life!

If they simply implemented real life penalties like drive through's & stop & go's etc, then there would be no need for the awfully flawed slow down penalty system we currently have.

VBR
but they also ruin the replays when you see cars turning invisible & driving through each other.
+1
The driving through other cars is very silly.
I too like to watch replays (like watching a race... but with me in it and my racing pals! :)... and the ghosting takes away from the enjoyment.
And yes, it will mess up perfectly good photomode opportunities.
