Great video by Chals that explains how the pad has changed since launch and what issues it currently faces, and how that affects competitiveness against the wheel.

From their perspective, the pad is currently at quite a disadvantage overall, with some specific car/track combos being closer to the wheel.

Thank you for this! I’ll be happy to answer as many questions as I can in the comments.

No worries @CGT_Chals, thanks for making it! I didn't even know about the issue with compression. When you showed the bumps, I can distinctly remember the steering feeling like it had a lot less range/motion, for example, the first and second Karussell at the Nürburgring.

I actually went back to GT Sport a few weeks back and what stood out to me, is what you mentioned in the video, the speed of rotation. When I came back to GT7, it felt too slow, so I bumped the sensitivity up a little bit.

To be honest, I never actually noticed the change from 1.49 in terms of controller, but I know it feels different from launch for sure.

Hopefully, they can bring it back to the pre 1.49 controller settings in the way it feels (even if the algorithm itself is different to account for new physics).

There's a chance something will change with the physics in Spec 3 when Dunlop is introduced, that might bring controller tweaks as well.

Interesting video, well presented and clear. I do think you may have missed something though. In May 2023 there was a physics update, at the time I was a D-pad user, yes DPAD ...... and very, very close to A+ DR. Once that update was released I found the pad unplayable, utterly insane levels of understeer, I could not rotate the car at all, something really big happened in May 2023.

I find the search function on this site kind of tough to use but I was very loudly complaining in several threads the game was now unplayable for me. I had to put the game down and went off to play fortnite for a year before finally committing to a proper wheel. It took months to get used to a wheel but I cannot imagine using a pad again.

I realise some do not have the space or maybe the budget but if you can swing it, a decent wheel is immeasurably better, there's really no comparison and I recommend you make the transition if your situation allows for it. I have a fairly large rig (Titan) but have it on castors and this has been the key to ensuring our PS5 room is not hogged by my rig as I tuck it away after each session.

ANyways, check out the May 2023 update as I think that hurt the pad.

Good information and confirms what I suspected. It's similar to the issue with certain cars in GT6 that they later fixed, I remember we had a time trial that was essentially impossible without a wheel one time. I'd hope they'll give us a setting to change the steering limit, I'm sure some people benefit from how it is now but others will prefer to be able to steer more and deal with any of the issues. Recently a few of us were retrying the IA-10 Master test and it was extremely difficult to match the demo lap, on controller it wasn't possible to match the corner speeds in certain places because of the steering restriction.

I'm still happy enough using controller, works great for me most of the time and it keeps the game very accessible, just a few tweaks or additional settings would really help out.
