Hey all

I just bought GTA III for my PS2, I got it home, started playing and after about 10 seconds of play time it froze and a message came up at the bottom of the screen "unable to read PS DVD" this happened 2 or 3 more times after I reset the console etc. So I ended up taking the game back to the shop. Got a replacement and after about 5 minutes of driving around, it did it again. I've been playing it for about 4-5 hours now on and off and it seems ok now though... just wondered did anyone else have a problem with GTA when they first bought it? My PS2 works fine with all other games so no problem with the machine.

Is your PS2 vertical? If so, put it horizontal...games used to freeze for me until I put it horizontal.

my brothers ps2 is horizontal and his game always stops. mine is also, but mine never freezes.

My PS2 is always vertical and Vice City freezes on the occasion but nothing to serious, all my other games run fine.

Me and my brother bought a PS2 between us.

It scratched the hell out of his SSX disk and he had to pay €10 for a replacement disk.

I've heard that some early PS2s had problems where they'd damage disks irrepreprably. However, my PS2 didn't cause disk scratching problems until after the 1 yr warranty was up.

If you can't solve the problem by blasting the disk surface with a good household cleaner (I've fixed several CDs that have come back from "friends" covered in gunk by using some household cleaners), then take it to your local video store.

They might have a disk polishers that can fix scrathces on CD-ROMs, DVDs, AudioCDs etc. that you can't fixed yourself with a good disk scrubbing. My local video shop guy has fixed a couple of PC games, a DVD and my Encarta Atlas disk for me. He charges €4 a go.

Thanks for all the help.

My PS2 is horizontal, since playing today, it has done the freezing thing once or twice where it is unable to read the disc, then after a little while it reads the disc again and the game continues (I found this out cause I couldn't be bothered getting up to reset the console :-) ).

Another thing I have noticed is that if I am in a fast car and hit top speed the scenery does not load and I have to stop and wait for it to catch up. So I end up hitting some wall or traffic signal that I can't see cause it hasn't loaded yet.

I don't have enough room on my memory card to save the game either (GT3 saves are more important) so once I get a new memory card then I can just save it frequently and if it freezes I can just reload it.

Other than that it's an awesome game. Comparing it to Driver on the PS I like the idea that you can choose what to do. Eg. do missions, cruise around and do crazy stuff etc.

Once again thanks for the help.

Another problem I have noticed. If I'm in a fast car going fast :-) the scenery takes ages to load and I hit a wall/traffic light or something that's not even there yet. Also in some intersections the road just turns into a big blue blur and goes all fuzzy, like driving on water.

I have a new memory card now so I have no problems, just save frequently so if it freezes I can just reload it.

Have you disabled the blur option in the menu? I don't know why they even included it...hides the PS2's interlacing flicker, I suppose. ;)

The problem with the road looking like water happens to me too. If I'm flying around at top speed in a PCJ or a fast car it happens me all the time. Sometimes I've noticed that the entrance to the Pay'n'Sprays look like solid walls when you hit them at full speed and the entrance to the Film Studio doesn't appear until you've almost hit it.

This problem is quite noticable when flying around at high speed in a copter like the Hunter. Sometimes objects just pop up at the last moment. I think it's just because of the limitations of the PS2's slowish processor and low memory (300Mhz and 32Mb) and because of the huge nature of the game area. Objects have obviously been programmed with a low-res and high-res versions. Sometimes the high-res version doesn't load until you've almost hit it. I bet these problems have been limited on the PC though.

This is also probably the reason that I have to drive slowly through Little Haiti to make gangs appear. When I drive at top speed, the gangs are rare. But I notice that when I drive carefully and slowly, there's far more gang members all over the place.
