Not really familiar with Cords, but just by looking at it I voted sub-zero.
 
I imagine these made quite a statement surrounded by typical 1930s rolling stock when they first appeared.
 
That body.....can make a good hot rod out of that Cord though.

The Century of Cars collectors folio brought this beast to my attention over a decade ago and it's still no less of a jaw-dropper now. External exhaust piping and the wraparound grille made it look like some sort of retrofuturistic mob mover.

Perhaps a little too slab-nosed to be Sub Zero. But that shred of inelegance can't take much away from such a cool creation.

Well, yeah, but the transaxle ahead of the engine in a rear-engined car is virtually a must--cars like the Subaru 360 and NSU TT have the engine aft of the differential but the transaxle is tacked onto the side as in typical front-drive applications--but Citroen [in the Traction Avant, DS 21, SM, etc.] used the exact same layout as the Cord with the engine aft of the transaxle mounted longitudinally, in a front-mid arrangement. Oh and you can't forget Tucker with the rear-engine layout, particularly when he used actual Cord components.
