It's not trying to be anything. It is both of those.

Precisely. It's a Q-car, and a damm good example of one. And remember people, while it may be a Vauxhall by platform, it's first and foremost a Lotus by heart (yes, it's not a lightweight car, but Lotus did most of the work of giving the Carlton its edge). Don't forget that the car is called a LOTUS Carlton, not a Vauxhall Lotus Carlton.

Like the Mk1 Lotus Cortina, it was assembled by Lotus at their factory. Think of it in the same way you would a RUF.

Performance was crazy fast in the early 90's but it looks pretty boring to me. Still cool.

Sleeper: Minimal body additions if any, usually available in Black, Blackity Black Black, and Devoid of All Light.

Sports sedan: Extreme body additions, usually available in some ridiculous color like fluorescent blue, although again, that isn't always the case.

This thing seems to fit in between both of these in an awkward way. It wants to be flashy, but it wants to not be flashy.
Not really, it's wheel arches where required to put the wider tyres, if they didn't do that it would of handled like an American Boat.

The GMC Syclone is a far, far better sleeper than the Grand National GNX IMO. Although the Farmtruck that appears on Street Outlaws, while certainly not factory original, was for years considered to be the one of the ultimate sleepers (if not the ultimate sleeper) until the show became popular thus killing its sleeper status.

Anyway, about the Carlton- it's a sleeper, and I find most sleepers to be absolutely epic machines so SZ.

You don't need a giant front air dam to fit tires.

It's still a nice thing to have if you're certifying the car for over 176 mph. Unless the idea is for the car to become airborne once you hit terminal velocity. Same can be said for the rear spoiler... which seems more optimized to counter lift than to create downforce.

And looking it up... yup... they claim zero lift at both ends, with a drag coefficient of 0.31.

-

Two things against this car... 1: It's a sleeper. 2. It's a Vauxhall.

-

But still... it's a reasonably pretty thing. And it's got Lotus badges. And I've always been a sucker for those lovely alloys.

:D

Oh dear - if you turn up to pick up your date in one of these, you are gonna feel a bit uncool.
Old dated looking saloon with a bodykit, and so you have to explain why it is cool

Explaining to a hot girl why a car is cool - is a seriously uncool thing to do!

and by the way - I'd love to have one of these cars

It's a Vauxhall Carlton that does 176mph. For years it was the fastest sedan in the world and was the fastest Vauxhall until the 6.0l Monaro VXR.

The mentalness of it is very cool.

Actually it was the 2nd world's fastest road-going sedan/saloon after the Alpina B10 Biturbo (E34). The B10 has a top speed of 291 km/h, while the Carlton is a little bit behind it.
